Innocentsake Posted November 21, 2011 So today was my birthday (turned 26 ) and my wonderful husband took me for my very first visit to the Volks Store in Torrance. I was so so happy that he was taking me there even though it was raining cats and dogs outside. It didn't take that long to make it to the store either about 30 minutes or so (would've been there sooner had it not been for the rain and bad drivers because of the rain). When we started to reach our destination we were both confused since the area where the Volks Store is located is surrounded by industrial buildings and such. But thankfully I saw the building with the Volks Door and the little stand they had outside saying they were opened so we quickly parked and I rushed inside Since I've always heard that photos aren't allowed except for the areas they have set up for the dolls I made sure not to take any souvenir photos :3 Instantly I started looking around the bottom level which had all their dolls and clothes for their "Who's that girl?" and "Dollfie (27cm/25cm/22cm) lines. I bought an outfit for one of my friend's Obitsu girls for Christmas and I also put together an outfit for my Azone Kirino (they looked about the right size and when I got home they fit her like a charm). If my husband hadn't been there I would have surely picked up a few more things, but he's the one who keeps me from overdoing it haha. Oh and when we entered we had 2 women come and greet us and let us know if we needed help with anything, really nice people After putting those items in my basket I quickly made my way upstairs and looking at all the pictures they had up on the wall of all the different DDs/SDs/Etc. I was so excited when I saw the Fate/Stay Time line and saw my Saber Nero there Once up the stairs I was in heaven~! Everything DD and SD was up there and I was just as happy as could be! And I know it may be silly, but I always ALWAYS end up forgetting just how big DDs are! I've only seen them a few times in person, but being there and seeing all the clothes and shoes I was just amazed hehe. I immediately started thinking that I need to have a proper storage area for all of Saber Nero's future items While my husband and I looked at everything, there was a pretty nice group there having fun and chatting it up with the women who worked there. It made me happy to see how nice people in this hobby can be, even my husband said that to me when we left the store. I'm hoping that maybe some of us So Cal Locals can go to the store together sometime in the future Didn't pick up too many things since I'm saving up for some of the clothes from special events they'll be getting in the future. I went ahead and bought a (L) wig cap so I would have that already. I was going to get a smaller one than that, but one of the ladies said the one smaller than the (L) size was cutting it close to being too small so I decided not to chance it. I didn't get any of the Pitatto sheets since I wasn't sure if I really needed them or not, do any of you use it with the wig cap as well? If so let me know your opinion on it! I also got a copy of the Volks News 45 and even though I thought I wouldn't I decided to also go ahead and enter the lottery for the painted DDH-06 head because I really adore the face up they did for it (Did that just a few minutes ago, crossing my fingers for good results!). And so with everything I picked up both downstairs and upstairs I went ahead and paid for my items It was such a great experience and I really can't wait to go to the store again (especially when I have Saber in hand). Just wanted to share my first experience with everyone and I would love to hear everyone else's stories about their first visit whether it be to the physical store or just ordering online for the first time I hope you all had that excited, warm fuzzy feeling as well! archangeli Posted November 21, 2011 How awesome! I'm glad you had an great time at the LA store - I'd love to visit one day! And it was super sweet of your hubby to take you - Happy Birthday fellow November baby! My first visit to a Volks Store is rather funny. This was May 2008 when I was in Tokyo with my parents and sister. My sis and I took the day away from the parental units to explore Akihabara. She really wanted an MSD kit, and I wasn't really looking into getting anything at the time (I wasn't collecting BJD's or DD's back then). She had a VERY rough idea where the store was (she knew it was inside a building, somewhere near Electric Town exit) but no specifics so we just wandered about. When we exited at Electric Town we spotted (the now closed down) Radio Kaikan building with the big KOTOBUKIYA shop in the main floor. We were both excited and went in to shop, and worked our way up through the building and checked out all the shops in there. It was like 1 cool shop after another - Kaiyodo, Yellow Submarine, Azone...! Anyways by the time we worked our way up to the 5th floor there seemed to be not much more to see since it looked like empty storage facilities for the stores on the floors below. Sis and I decided to take the elevator back down (cuz we were feeling super lazy) and while we were waiting she stared at the floor directory. She can read a bit of Japanese and stopped upon something called "Bo-ku-su" We looked at each other and said: "Hmm... "Books?" "Well that doesn't seem to make much sense... Want to check it out?" So we went up to the "books" floor and this is what we saw: (don't mind my TarePanda! He's my travelling toy!) It was like the clouds parted, a beam of light came from the heavens and the angels started to sing! We were so excited and spent almost 2 hours in there. My sister picked out an MSD kit, but since she was completely new to the hobby we also got wigs, shoes, clothes, socks, ZM spray, face-up paint, brushes, eye lashes - THE WORKS! We had a ridiculous time trying to communicate with the sales girls who didn't speak any English and we spoke very minimal Japanese - I'll always know how to say "gloss" in Japanese now! She didn't have a credit card at the time so I swiped mine for her - I remember our eyes bulging out of our heads when we saw the ##,### yen! Since sis had both blown her (back then) university student shopping budget out of the water, and had a beautiful bag from Volks that we didn't want to ruin bashing into things, we went back to the hotel and had cup noodles for dinner that night! Innocentsake Posted November 21, 2011 First off, thank you so much for the Birthday wishes! Fellow November babies, excellent The LA Store is definitely small, but I would call it cozy hehe. And yes my husband is absolutely the best, he is my one and only That is an amazing story of your first visit to a Volks Store (especially since it was the one in Akihabara)! And even more so since neither of you even knew that store or were looking for it in the first place. That is why I need my husband to be with me because if he left me alone in any Volks store I am sure I would run rampant! I could've spent all day at the store just looking at all the dolls that decorated the tables. So many different dolls with so many different looks! I could imagine my face would also be the same if I saw digits like that ----> O__________O Hehe but knowing me I would be shocked at first, but once I got home and played with everything I bought I would forget about that shock immediately I bet those cup of noddles tasted even better being surrounded by all the things you and your sister purchased from Volks
pandacornn Posted November 22, 2011 Yayy! Happy birthday, Inno-channnnnnnnnnn! (too lazy to spell out your whole username *shot*) Hope you had lots of fun there! I know after the first time I went, I went every weekend for like a month OTL;; But no worries, I bought different things each time and I actually think I went with different people each time too LOL;; There's a lot to do in the area so we go for that too haha xD; (food, shopping, etc~) I've only taken Sanae there once (excluding the time I bought herhehe) and the photo space is just so much fun~ Didn't know that line fit azones!! O: I must go again heehee but with a new mission in mind(;
baldylox Posted November 22, 2011 Oh man, I remember my first visit to a Volks store.... it was AMAZING. I was visiting Japan on vacation last year and staying with a friend in Osaka. He said we had to go to Denden Town because it's like a smaller version of Akiba. And they also had a Volks store! I told him about visiting and he said he knew right where it was. So after walking a few blocks from the train station, we arrived at the Volks building. They had TONS of stuff there! But I wanted to see the DD stuff so we went up a few stories to get to it. This is where things get fun. As soon as we got into the store, my friend stopped.... he saw all the DD's and resins and decided NOT to follow me in. He sat at the door on the bench provided. I think he was too mortified to enter. I on the other hand waltzed right in and started looking at the displays they had up. It was my first time seeing so many DD's in person. They had so many awesome setups... and I was so sad I couldn't take any pics! After staring blankly at the awesomeness for a bit, I went to check out clothing and stuff. I started grabbing things like someone may try and take them before I did, even tho I was alone in the store. I had like five outfits in one hand as I dug thru more things and that's when a salesgirl came over to see how I was doing. She asked me something in Japanese and I had to do the little hand wave gesture to tell her I didn't speak any Japanese. She immediately bowed and left. I was like huh? What did I do wrong? I thought maybe I insulted her or something. A second later, she came back with a small hand basket to put all my things in and she had another girl in tow. The new girl said hello and asked if I was ok or needed anything.... IN ENGLISH! I was like YAY! Those two were excited that I was excited! They giggled a bit with hands covering their mouths and then I asked about shoes. We went over to where those were and I grabbed a couple of pairs. Then she asked me if I was buying these for my sister or girlfriend. I smiled wide and grabbed my cell phone. They both looked on as I found pics of Manami and showed them to them. All I kept getting was "OOOOOOOO!!" and "EEEEEEE" from the two girls. It was hilarious. About this time, my friend decided to come over and see what kind of trouble I was getting into. He approached saying something in Japanese ( probably "Please excuse my barbarian American friend, he's a savage but wont eat you." ) and they bowed to him and smiled explaining that I was fine and they were having fun looking at my pics. He stared blankly at me and then shrugged his shoulders and went back to sit down. It was a great experience for me and the girls there seemed to have fun too. I spent a TON of money and paid cash, they seemed amazed for some reason. Ha ha! They even gave me a points card, a Volks book, Volume 40, and some other pamphlets. After all this, when I visited Tokyo alone later in my trip, I went and found other Volks stores. I hit Akiba, Shinjuku and Shibuya. All the stores were cool as heck and everyone was super nice to me. I'd love to see the LA store one of these days! Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop. I couldn't go there that often because I'm sure I would be most tempted to go on a shopping spree :3 Yeah after we left there we ended up going to the mall that wasn't too far away so it was a fun trip Sanae will want to visit again and mingle with the DDs on display there. They even had a Rin on display with a blonde wig and a yukata and she looked great Oh man, I remember my first visit to a Volks store.... it was AMAZING. ....I'd love to see the LA store one of these days! Billy Your first visit sounds so amazing! Makes me want to go to Japan even more now (I already wanted to go really bad, but now even worse XD). That's hilarious that your friend was trying to save you when the girls were really amused and happy to see the pictures of your Manami! Even better that one of them spoke English so you could clearly talk with them instead of having to hand gesture and think you were offending them One of these days I'm definitely going to save up so I can just go on an all out shopping spree to my heart's content! Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it made me smile reading the whole thing! Hopefully one day I'll get to tour all the showrooms in Japan and you can come take a gander at the LA store. It is cozy, but full of friendly people and wonderful items. Not to mention that I too wish I could've taken pictures inside! All the DD's on display looked great
Usaii Posted November 22, 2011 My first visit was when Pandacornn dragged me with her to go. =w= I kind of forget the details of my first visit other than that. Though, my most memorable memory in Volks would probably br when they released headphones and whatnot and we had to get there early to get them. It was quite a long wait. But yeah after seeing the Dollfie Dreams when I first visited, it totally made me want one. *Q* Before I was like ehhh.. but they're just so pretty/cute in real life. Also Happy Belated Birthday!! I hope you had a great timeeeee. Congrats on your first visit to Volks as well~

Hehe that's great that Pandacornn dragged you there and showed you the beauty of DDs I bet she was super happy to have converted you >:D While I was at the store I couldn't help looking and re-looking at the ones they had on display. And I especially couldn't help looking at the Aoi and Yukino models within hands reach haha~ I entered the lottery for the pre-painted 06 head, but I really want to put her on a DDS body But buying all the parts from Volks is so expensive :/ and it doesn't seem like they'll be selling it as a stand-a-lone body anytime soon puu~ I can either wait, buy a standard body (that isn't the DDIII body o_o) or have her share Saber's Body which I really don't think Saber will tolerate haha. How long did the two of you wait in line before the store opened? I'm wanting to do that on Dec 3rd for the Kobe clothes they are getting in and wondering how early I should get there to get a good spot Also are either of you going to be there? :
pandacornn Posted November 22, 2011 We got there super super early >__> we were like the first ones there but it was too cold so we waited in the car but some other chick actually beat us to the actual door. I think we got there at 7. It was fun but I would only do it again for something I really wanted. I don't think the kobe items are worth it for me personally(: Have fun though~! Its really a great experience! I wanted to get he 06 head with dds body but I think I'd rahter get millhiore. Plus, the dds body not being a regular item as a full set is really a bummer. >__> I think the dd3 will become standard soon since they are bring the v2 aoi and yukino in soon(:
Usaii Posted November 22, 2011 No. I thought it was like 6 or 6:30 when we arrived. We got out of the car at 7 once we saw that person run to the door. >___>;; It was FREEEEZING. Bring some nice warm clothes and something to entertain yourself with. ;u; We watched high school of the dead for a bit, and we were still bored for most of the time. Also, it might sound ridiculous considering how early we went (which I thought too) but they have a really limited amount of items you can buy. Maybe 3-4 max per item ish for everyone in the store. So if there's something you really want, you should be there quite early. >o<;; And no I don't think I will be going either. ;; *Can not deal with going so early and waiting*

Maybe I'll get there 7 or 8 am and have my PSP with me so I can play Fate/Extra while in line waiting I'll be sure to bundle up too in case it is super cold and/or rainy o_o I really want the "Exciting Summer Vacation Set" and possibly the "Sappanwood Red Kimono" along with the white pair of sandal heels they'll have :3 Haha David said he will absolutely be there with me so at least I won't be alone and yes I shall have fun seeking out the items I want I guess they put a limit to keep the line moving that way the people who are outside can get in faster, but I would be a little miffed too after waiting all that time and being limited on the number of items I bought all together. I mean I understand if they only let you buy one per outfit/shoes/etc, but oh well guess ya just gotta go with it. Even though I thought Millhiore & Mariko were cute, I just didn't get that spark like when I saw Saber Nero. But I'm happy to hear that you'll be getting her for yourself! Are you going to go for her extra outfit as well? And that's true, since the the renewal versions of Aoi & Yukino will arrive surely they will start carrying those as standards. So most likely I'll buy the DDIII body and whenever the DDS comes out standard I'll get that one (of course this is if I win the 06 head :3).
Usaii Posted November 22, 2011 Oh when I say 3-4 items. I don't mean you can only buy 3-4 items max. I meant that the total of their entire stock = 3/4 per item. So only 3-4 people can get it. You CAN buy one of each if you're the first person in line and you're fast enough to grab them all. But yes be sure to take a blanket or some warm jacket for sure~ Hope you get the stuff you want when you go~
Innocentsake Posted November 22, 2011 Ah! I understand now, that makes more sense though still sucks o_o Hopefully I'll be able to get the outfit I really want then! -Plans to be there quite early then XD- Thanks Usaii!
Traveller Posted November 22, 2011 My first visit to a Volks store was this year (Late Sept) in Tokyo. I had just checked in to my hotel and leaving Sae behind in the room to check evrything was OK, I made my way to Akiba by foot which was about a 15 min walk passing many vending machines as I went. When I arrived I found the old Radio Kaidan building but didn't know where to go from there other than a map that was posted on the boarding of the old building showing who had relocated to where but when in japanese that was a tad hard to read. So I went a wandering and found it around the cornor on the next street. The ground floor was packed with figure related mechandise, 1st floor had wall to wall model kits, paints and everything, along with stuff you can't even buy in the UK and the 3rd floor was were the DD's lived. Upon arrival you are greeted with a hudge display case that had the new Sabre in, On the left was Alna with a microphone and bar that you were allowed to have your dollfie taken with using your own camera and around the flloor were DD, SD MSD and everything you could ask for. I picked up some hands and a new bust for Sae and was given a basket for the items by a sweet young girl as I was looking at Yukino and Aoi. I opted for Aoi to keep Sae happy in Tokyo. I tried to ask for a dollfie bag in japanese and the girl who had given me the basket, took me to a strip bag. I pointed to the black canvas bag and she went to look and came back with the tweed look version. I gave her the thumb up/ OK sign and she went to extrct 52,500 yen from my wallet (Ouch). Clothes were a let down and there were no many and the wigs were a huge let down as many were not in stock. Staff are fantastic and keen to help, so I went back a few other times to find other bits and peices like one of the 1/3 scale M16 rifles that they had limited stock of. Because clothes were a let down, I went to the Azone Iiternational shop on the 6th floor near Radio Kaidan. Who decided to put the place so damm high, and brought some clothes for Aoi there that did the job, especially the Shimipan undies by Cuties that come in packs of 3. Enter a Volks store with care, as you may end up nursing your wallet or Credit Card.
Till Troll Posted November 22, 2011 My first was the old showroom store in Radio Kaikan, Tokyo. I was on a business trip to Tokyo, and armed with HMRC exchange rates and most recent duty free/tax free limit (~£390!) I had a big shopping list as well. My hotel was about an hour from Akihabara, so I got a train in with a colleague on our afternoon off. We went all over Akihabara (Tenchi Muyo! hunt ) but the first stop was the Volks Showroom! I had planned to buy a DDdy and DDH-02 for months before hand, and even emailed the Showroom to see if they had any in stock. When they replied, they said they were all out. But they must have had a restock because there was one body left! I nabbed her (my Meade), a couple of pairs of eyes, some brushes and some 1/6th doll items. Alas, there were no bodystockings, and only the pre-rooted heads were left. The staff at Volks were so friendly, and they seemed just as excited as I was! They even took the tax off. I spent nearly 2 hours in the store, just looking at all the pretty things I knew it would be hard to get back in the UK, and was really really sad to leave. My long suffering colleague was very bemused by it all, but found their figure section and didn't complain too much . The meeting was two weeks long, and after a weekend at a onsen resort (!!) we had one afternoon left. My dad wanted me to find some watches he'd heard about, and there was apparently a shop in Harajuku that sold them. Leaving the train station my colleague and I (he's a good friend) got lost, and found another Volks shop! This shop not only had body stockings, but also had a white skin DDH-02 head (I ended up recolouring it to match normal skin) and a cute blue pigtail wig. (The shop my dad told me about did not have his watch, but did have stylish young men who screamed 'welcome' at me in Japanese every 20 seconds). Combined with my Tenchi loot (heh), an Obitsu head and some souvenirs for my family, I spent... £389.73! sooooo close to having to pay tax ^.^' I'd love to go again, or, in my wildest dreams, see the day Volks open up a London branch~~~ I'd only be an hour by train away~~~
MaxArcher Posted November 22, 2011 Going to the stores in Japan sounds really cool. I've been there a few times but not as a doll collector, so I haven't visited Volks yet. I like the LA store, and have been there about half a dozen times. The staff are all really nice. I had the same experience with the pictures in the stairwell when I first visited, it was during the lottery for Beato, so I didn't even know if I'd won her yet, but it was really exciting seeing the big photos on the wall. I also like that they sometimes have extras of limited items that don't get posted on the site, that's how my GF got her Shapely L body and limited DDH-02 head, and I've seen stuff there like White Christmas Alna when the site was long sold out. Oh, and it's not really part of the store, but Hakata Ramen Shinsengumi, which IMO is the best ramen place in SoCal and possibly in the US, is only a few minutes away as well! Going there is a mandatory part of visiting Volks. DD Beatrice - DD Saber/EXTRA
Tensei Posted November 23, 2011 The first time I went to the Volks Store was probably the first time that I headed down to Akihabara, so a good week after I landed in Japan. It was to be honest, a little overwhelming. Although I could understand Japanese, I still had issues reading it, and I wasn't comfortable speaking it (no pronunciation issues, or anything, just 3rd language related fear). I had already decided on getting the MSD Mire assembly kit, so I had to figure out where to go to get her. The FCS/Resin part of the sumika was pretty intimidating for someone who didn't know much about dolls. I visit it every time I'm in Akihabara. 天青 Join us in #DollfieDream!~
Innocentsake Posted November 23, 2011 @Traveller: Sounds like you had a really great time for your first visit Haha I bet your wallet was wincing a little after that transaction, but I'm sure it understood that it was really worth it! That's too bad to hear that there hadn't been many outfits there, but at least you were able to find some in the Azone shop! I definitely heed your warning with care! My husband knows that if I were left to be alone, I might just break down and shop till I drop @Till Troll: That's awesome that you were able to hit two stores in order to get everything you wanted! I bet that was a treat finding that second one For you I definitely hope that one day they open a branch in London that way you will always be able to get there at a minute or rather several minutes notice. Plus you gotta love Tenchi Muyo as well @MaxArcher: Glad that you enjoy going there and go there often The staff are super nice! They answered all my questions and helped me find things even though they were right in front of me And I will definitely keep my eyes open for any items that aren't listed on the site that I might want. It's great that your girlfriend was able to find Shapely L body and limited DDH-02 head! Mmm ramen is so good, I'll have to check that place out with my husband the next time we visit the store. Which will most likely be Dec 3rd since I'm wanting to pick up an outfit from the Kobe line :3 @Tensei: Even though you felt intimidated at least you're able to read some and speak it if you needed to. Though I understand your fear of speaking a language you aren't native in, I'm sure I would be scared as well! But I'm glad you were able to get through it and still go when you can hehe. youth Posted November 24, 2011 Had the opportunity to visit Japan last year in May & went to the Volks shop in Osaka & then Akihabara. It's like being a kid in a candy store. Didn't have any DD's yet (Rina on preorder & Alna lost lottery after I got back) so I just admired their displays spending money only on their branded PVC figures. Been wanting to check out their LA store this year when attending Anime Expo(they really should get a booth) but unfortunately couldn't find the time. You can see a little bit of the old Akihabara shop in this video I recorded inside the old Radio Kaikan building.
galatia9 Posted November 27, 2011 It was so much fun reading all these first time visits!! How exciting to go to a store in Japan, especially a Tokyo one!! Maybe someday I'll get to go to one, I have family in Japan and my brother and his family go to Japan pretty regularly, at least once a year. I've been to the Volks store in LA only once in November 2010, but there's a very good chance I'll get to go again someday. I went with a friend of mine who'd been at least two times before, and who had also been to the Volks Mansion event back in 2006, I think. As Innocentsake already mentioned, the Torrance store is in a business park, and it would be so easy to go right by it if you weren't paying attention. My two friends and I arrived about twenty minutes before store opening, and there was already a not-too-long line outside. and yes, it was raining just a little. It was a day for new Dolpa items to be released, so there were more customers there than on a usual day. Downstairs there was a pirate-themed area set up for SD and DD to have their pictures taken, and there was the Dollfie retail area. I was amazed at how detailed the tiny clothing and accessory items for the Dollfies were! The aircraft model kits were also there. I knew I shouldn't be tempted, though, because what I really wanted to see was upstairs! Upstairs, they let us in a few people at a time so everyone wouldn't be crowded right at the door. I was surprised at how tiny the area was! I was mainly interested in the SD items, and purchased a few things for my SD13 boys and girls. Plus I picked up some animetic eyes and took a good long look at the DD section. I was SO tempted to walk out of there that day with Yukino, but the time just wasn't right. But I did get to see some very cute DDs and lots of beautiful SDs up close. And I got to see the desk where people sit down to place their FCS orders. Someday I would love to do that!! Everyone working there was so nice, and we had an especially long chat with Bailey downstars in the photo area, where we went after buying way more than was good for us upstairs. None of us left with a doll that day, though, except for those we brought with us. Can't wait to go again!! Traveller Posted November 27, 2011 @Traveller: Sounds like you had a really great time for your first visit Haha I bet your wallet was wincing a little after that transaction, but I'm sure it understood that it was really worth it! That's too bad to hear that there hadn't been many outfits there, but at least you were able to find some in the Azone shop! I definitely heed your warning with care! My husband knows that if I were left to be alone, I might just break down and shop till I drop I'm going back this time next year with Sae and hopefully to come back with a limited character dollfie as I didn't get to Mandrake to see what they had to offer, and this trip will have a bigger spending budget as well as I am saving up for it now. Innocentsake Posted November 30, 2011 @Youth: Whenever I do get the chance to visit Japan (I'm hoping 2013) I'll definitely be stopping by the Volks stores there so I can experience it for myself I also agree that VolksUSA should set up a booth at Anime Expo. That way they can spread the word about their product. They could bring some Yukinos & Aois along with a couple of accessories and whatnot to lure buyers in I know that when I go to AX I'm always looking for something interesting and those with large amounts of spending money might just be interested in getting a Dollfie @Galatia9: I'm glad that you had such a great time when you went to the store in Torrance You really should go again~! I know I want to @Traveller: I do hope you & Sae will have a good time when you go back to Japan I'm sure you'll find some interesting things at Mandrake. Good thing you'll have a bigger spending budget because you'll definitely need it
Heidi Posted December 1, 2011 The first time I went I was on a trip with Maridah and Max Archer. My bf and I wanted to get Yukino, but when we saw the shapely L body and limited DDH-02 head they had in stock, we were sold on her! They had exactly two so that's how Morgan and Rosalia are twins. We visited the Volks store in Los Angeles and it was so neat to see all the pretty dolls and the many things you can buy for them. If I ever go to Japan, I would love to visit a Volks store there. Innocentsake Posted December 14, 2011 @Heidi: I love how the two of you have twin girls, that's so fun I really love how the limited DDH02 Head looks, her expression is just too cute. I remember I had wanted her back before I decided to really get into this hobby~ I'd love to go to the various Volks Stores in Japan as well, it would be really interesting to see! Though it would be very hard on my wallet ^^;;
