Can you help Mamimi with her collection? :)

I got home one evening and found Mamimi in the kitchen looking thru her coin collection....

Hey you, what'cha up to?

"Oh hi Papa, I'm just looking thru my stretched penny collection."

32072913121_0ea1bb7c98_z.jpgDSC_0797 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

Ahh nice. Those are pretty cool aren't they?

"Yeah they are, it's interesting to see what places you've been and what those places print on the pennies."

32042690692_0d243ea303_z.jpgDSC_0798 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

"These are all of the ones you've given me so far."

Some of these really bring back some memories. Which ones are your favorites?

"I think I like this one best because it's got bears on it."

Hee hee, funny you like that one best..... that was the first one I can remember ever getting. I got that way back when I was a kid.

"Wow, that means this one is OLD."

Hey now!

31815932980_feacb76f16_z.jpgDSC_0803 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

"But I like this one a lot too since it's our hometown. Plus it's got a horse on it."

Yeah, I like that one too. There's a few more in there from the SC Aquarium too.

32190935175_3912264d2a_z.jpgDSC_0804 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

"I know you pick these up whenever you go out of town but I wonder how popular these are elsewhere in the world. Do you know if they do these anywhere besides the US?"

I have no idea dear. I don't think I've ever seen these anywhere else before.

"Hmm. Even if it's just a US thing, it'd be cool to get more of them somehow."

31815902710_a0e31487a9_z.jpgDSC_0805 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

Well, maybe we can ask people on the DD forums if they have these kind of machines around them and if they do maybe they would trade one or two from their areas for one or two from ours.

"You think people or their girls would want to do that? That would be super cool if they did....."

31380639663_1007954456_z.jpgDSC_0806 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

"Maybe I could get some from places like California or Nevada or even Canada!"

Now now, don't get ahead of yourself. Let's ask people if they'd like to help out and then go from there.

"Alright, you have a point."

31815859200_06e00831f5_z.jpgDSC_0807 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

Maybe you'll get lucky and get more of these!

"No Papa! This is just silly! And it's not even real! It's just a coaster!"

31380608013_25bf51471e_z.jpgDSC_0808 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr

Seriously tho. If anyone out there is interested in doing trades for these flattened pennies, Mamimi and I would love to do some swaps! We'd be happy to do one for one trades..... meaning we'll pay the 51 cents to make the pennies and then pay shipping to you in a regular envelope to anywhere in the world. All you would need to do is just reciprocate by sending us the same amount of pennies you want in trade. You would cover the same costs we do. Or if you don't collect these and just want to send us some pennies for fun, please feel free! Just PM me for our address and we'll go from there.

I think this could be fun! Showing our girls getting their pennies and maybe starting new collections would be neat to see! And please feel free to trade between yourselves as well as with us, might as well get others to have fun with these cheap and fun pennies!

I know the train station in my city has a few of those flat penny making machines, next time I'm in that area with some extra change I'll get some just for Mamimi! Well... that is if I remember

You know, I've seen some cool pictures of floors and backsplashes people have done with regular pennies, but I think a backsplash with stretched pennies would be even cooler! Lot more to look at.

It's been a while since I've been in a spot of AZ that was touristy enough to have one of those doodlies, I think, but maybe I should keep an eye out so I can do a couple at each one--one for Mamimi and one for a backsplash embellishment. =P

I've never heard of doing that but it sounds like it could be cool.

Her Grace is absolutely up to task of going to the train station and see if their penny machines are still up! If memory serves it was located right by the model Jupiter

hmm... I wonder if the ones by the Aquarium can still be accessed w/out needing to buy a ticket (winter, winter changes everything!)

Mamimi, must your pennies have city/state names specifically, or will any local 'oddity' do? 'cause... uh... we are the city with a freakin CITGO commercial sign as a landmark & an oversized HOOD milk bottle as a drink's kiosk... so... u know... just getting this quest details down

EDIT: k, so I'm in Boston, in the "tourist-trap" daily, so if anyone legit wants these for their collection - by all means, hit me up!

Penny floors ARE pretty cool! https://www.google.com/search?q=penny+floor&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi6p4DR9LPRAhXrxVQKHViqCJEQ_AUICCgB&biw=1192&bih=839#imgrc=VwVw4bFK7NN7fM%3A

Apparently after laying them you cover them with a clear epoxy to protect both the grout and the copper itself.

Yesh, they look neat, but still seems like a waste of perfectly good currency. Guess you'd have to do the cost analysis to see which was cheaper.

Anywho, back to the topic at hand, my wife is big on collecting these and always gets new ones on the rare times we travel. She may even have more than one of the "passport book" holders full. I've forwarded her the link, and I'll let you know if she's got anything. What might be of help is to state what it is you have near you, so that if someone is looking for it, or wants one, they know what they can ask for/will get.

I have seen these before! They're so cool, but I don't have any of the machines near me I think, but if I run across one, and remember this post, I'll see what I can do!

Best of luck to Mamimi with her collection!

Much love

Yay! Whatever is easiest for you, no need to go out of your way for any of them.

"Hello! ANY stretched penny would be cool! I'm not picky at all..... whatever you think is neat or if there's only one kind, that's fine too. All I want is something that is from far away from me! All we have is local stuff to the Southeast area."

EDIT: k, so I'm in Boston, in the "tourist-trap" daily, so if anyone legit wants these for their collection - by all means, hit me up!

Anything from there would be awesome! My Dad is actually from Boston ( Chelsea to be precise ) so anything from around those parts would be interesting to have.

Wow, that's pretty awesome! Thanks for sharing that!

Thank you! I bet her collection looks amazing, I've never heard of books for these! As for what's near me, the only thing we have here is random Charleston SC ones like the horse and carriage one, as well as some from the SC Aquarium.... but those are harder to get because you have to pay entrance to the actual aquarium to get inside to find the machines. But if someone wants them I can still see if I can work something out.

Anyway, this reminds me - I totalz have a penny to show off. Nope, never been, this was a gift from someone who did go

Oh Chise, that Stitch coin is amazing! So friggin cool! You're lucky to have that, I bet it wasn't easy to get! But that makes me think that we might actually see some of these machines when we go to Japan in late March.... we'll be staying in Akihabara so if there are any there, that's the place we'll find them.

Thanks for sharing that coin!

These are really neat! I have never seen them before We don't use pennies in our currency anymore.

Funny thing is, America needs to get rid of their pennies. It costs more to produce them than what they are worth.

I wish I could press all pennies I own into these machines for free, but they require you to pay $2(? I don't remember) and a penny to make these.

WOW! I had no idea they had websites listing where these were! That's so cool! But one question... do you have to use an actual penny in these or a one yen coin? Most I saw on that list cost 100 yen to make but said nothing about putting in a penny or anything. Do I need to bring a pocket full of US pennies with me or can I just get a bunch of one yen coins while I'm there? Anyone know?

$2?? All the ones around here are 50 cents and a penny so 51 cents total. I've heard people say they were going up to $1 but I haven't seen one of those yet. $2 sounds nuts.... maybe it's inflation or a West Coast thing since living expense is higher out there.

It wouldn't surprise me. I think the last machine I saw down in Santa Barbara's zoo was $1. And we have a theme park here in the city I live in, and I think it's also $1. So one down in LA being $2 would unfortunately make sense with all the tourism. West coast prices indeed. I don't think we have anything left over here that costs under $1

They don't use actual money. The machines typically will have a bunch of "blank" copper pieces loaded up inside which is what the machine will stamp with the designs

The greatest irony, of course, is that a penny costs the US Mint more than 1cent to make, so random blobs of copper in a machine is still more cost effective!

Dang, I didn't know they don't use pennies anymore..... kinda odd. But that saves me from carrying around a bunch of them.

That list you showed me has a lot of areas that we will be going to so I'll try and grab as many different ones as I can. If I see any Pokémon ones, I'll get them for you.

What???? I didn't know this! I always thought my penny was used for the pressing, well now I learned something new.

And yeah, Los Angeles tends to have much more overpriced "everything" just for tourists.

In the States the penny is used, but outside of the USA, not so much. I think the last one my wife used in Utah was 4 quarters and a penny, so $1.01.

According to Title 18, Chapter 17 of the U.S. Code, which sets out crimes related to coins and currency, anyone who “alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens” coins can face fines or prison time.

So Mamimi, when Baldy goes to the big house you and your friends can come live with my girls.

Did you clear that with Kizuna? I can't see her being as open to the idea of an invasion like Chitose would be.

"The process of creating elongated coins is legal. The foregoing statute, however, does not prohibit the

mutilation of coins if the mutilated coins are not used fraudulently, i.e., with the intention of creating counterfeit coinage. Because elongated coins are made mainly as souvenirs, mutilation for this purpose is legal"

/pendantic moment of the day

An update on my quest progress!

I did a quick check for pennies Mamimi might like, and turns out... in downtown Boston alone... I can access something like 50+ different designs!! (seriously, each machine has unique 4, no machines repeat!)

Out of which at least a dozen are sports themed (Sox, Celtics, Bruins...)

soooooo, if anyone else would like to suddenly start up a collection of silly souvenirs, now's a good time

and yes, most of these are still 51cents each, (I say most, 'cause machines in Aquarium appear to be a super-fancy $1, they were closing so didn't get better look)
