Photo Game: "Pose the Squad!"

A little while back there was a meme that was going around tumblr (and various other net communities with a large artist population) that was referred to as "draw the squad."

 

Users would make templates or bases like this one (kind of similar to pixel dolling) :

 

And then redraw them, filling the figures in with whatever characters they wanted! This yielded a lot of really funny results and it's still something I see on my dashboard every once in a while. I thought it might be fun to take some of these templates and instead of redrawing them, maybe insert our girls into them instead and make some creative scenes If you Google image search "draw the squad" you can come up with a bunch of these with different numbers of spots to fill -- usually there's two or more but you could definitely take artistic license with some of them and make them work for just one doll

 

I intend to give an example really really soon-- but, if any of you want to do this too, post the base you use and then your girls' take on it! Happy posing!

This is such a great idea! I'll have to try when I have time. Looks like fun.

It does, but I'd need some examples of it in action. I tried researching it, but it didn't make it any clearer.

That makes it very clear, and looks like fun. I may just have try this.

Oh, the possibilities...I'm totally trying this once I get a replacement USB cord for my phone. Looks like fun!

Ahh, the things I could do if I had three Dollfies...

I can't find many bases with just two characters but I'm going to try to do one with my two girls.

 

Thanks for the idea, buncho--I never saw this meme before but it looks like a lot of fun, and I'd also like to try it with drawing.

It's a bit hard since Makomo has such a sober face and I'm not good enough at photoshop to give her a big grin like the reference x__x

I like it, and IMHO we should leave Photoshop out of it, unless it's to do image stacking to get the look of more dolls.

 

I need to start looking to make a few of these myself.

I leave photoshop in this equation. My pictures would be banana yellow without color balancing.

I really wanted to do this one, and I tried hard;

 

 

But gravity did not work with me. I think I could've done it if Kaito had flatter hands.

 

But this is really fun. Especially for those that are weak at posing their crew right now like I am. I'm not used to posing with Miles or Lyca too much yet. I need the practice.

Since I started the thread I figured I should add a little more to it... So, have some more of my squad, doing what they do best

 

 

 

The angle is a bit different, but I think I got pretty close! This one made me realize how loose everyone's hips are (except for Mami's, which were just reinforced yesterday)

 

 

 

I think the only one who enjoyed this one was Teke, the lazy little scamp

Ie-Aster, I think Makomo's gaze and slight grin make it very clear how pleased she is with having Mei in her arms The tilt of her head and the fact that her cheek is kind of smushed into Mei's hair makes it better, too. I think this is a great attempt and if you enjoyed it, I can keep my eyes out for other bases with two characters for you I would love to see more of your girls!

 

Noxxbunny, I just love your Kaito. He's so friendly and calm looking! I like everyone's legs in this one-- the feet turned inward thing is actually really hard to pull off if you want your dolls to be able to stand unassisted. If you had done the second one, who would be who?

I find doing stuff like this is really helpful in getting a grasp on body mechanics/range of motion, and also for learning photography tricks. I'm happy that this is an enjoyable way to practice those things

Thank you so much! I would love to do more. It helps me a lot with figuring out how to do expressive posing. If there was a doll photography course these sorts of exercises would make good homeworks. And it makes me very happy that you like my girls!

Luckily Obitsu bodies seem to be pretty good at the inward legs thing, I'm finding. especially when the magnet stand comes into the equation!

 

For that second picture...I was trying to do Lyca at the top of the tower with Kaito holding him up while Miles would be off to the side like "Are you freaking kidding me?" I got Lyca into the perfect pose for that, but since Kaito's hands are a bit curved, he couldn't hold Lyca up well at all. He would basically roll forward. I have to get the flat DD "paper" hands and try again later!
