etoile Posted March 22, 2017 Well, I finally did it... I finally ordered a body for one of my floating heads. I'm really excited to finally have one of my girls completely together! In preparation, I've been putting together a bit of a makeshift bedroom for her, complete with mattress, blankets and decor pillows. I was just wondering what other people have as "bedrooms" for their girls or other places, if any. Did you make the items or purchase them from things you have found around? What is your favorite thing in your set that works well with your girl?
sinclair Posted March 22, 2017 Good questions as I want to kinda do the same thing.
Poofiemus Posted March 22, 2017 My girls don't have a bedroom, but they have kind of a slapdash sitting room; save for Homura's chair, which was from Home Goods and repainted, all their furniture was gradually acquired from thrift stores. The best piece is *definitely* the sofa, which my mom found for $10 at either Goodwill or Salvation Army: IMG_0004 by Poofiemus, on Flickr A bedroom you could probably thrift or cannibalize the chairs pretty easily. End tables, I've found, take a bit more hunting, or if you're okay with some woodworking you could probably make one. There are also tutorials online for making a bed out of your doll's box. etoile Posted March 22, 2017 That's a really good find! Homura's chair looks like it is in great condition and is perfectly sized! I've been looking at several different tutorials on both converting their box and on making bed frames and I think I'm going to try and make the bed frame from scratch.... Hopefully it will go well as I'm more crafty and less handy..... I went to the store this afternoon to pick out some fabric for the blankets and sheets. I got some nice white on white fabric that I am going to quilt with a sashiko pattern, I think. I still want to find some fabric to make a duvet, of sorts, and a few decorative throw pillows. I also got some nice merino yarn to make into a little throw. I really like the color and I think it'll pull everything together in a nice, fresh spring theme. Thank you so much for sharing your tips!
hikaru1976 Posted March 22, 2017 Hi Etoile! It's always nice to fit a floating head once and for all. I'm happy for you For the longest time I didn't really have much in the way of furniture or a space for my girls, but recently I had one of those IKEA PAX system closets installed (because the original closet wasn't organized, there was a lot of wasted space) Those can be adjusted to suit any need, so I made a space there. Then I made a somewhat Japanese looking old house porch, complete with the sliding door out of some wood left over from making shelves. I lightly burned the wood with a torch (just enough to turn it a nice dark chocolate color and then varnished it with a very non-stick paint. (Of course, no one wants to ruin their girls or clothes, so I tested it out for a long while before placing the girls on the porch) Unfortunately I always wanted to complete this old house look by giving it a thatched roof feel, but I live in a big city so I never found such small straw grass (because regular straw would look off scale with everything) The complete idea here was to have the porch for the girls to sit on while the inner wall with the sliding door would only be a 3 dimensional background. I also agree with Poofiemus Thrift stores might have some mini furniture, in my case, I found a music box that looked exactly like a mini-drawer that perfectly suits the dollfie 1/3 size. Other than that, if my sister could lend me her sewing machine, I always wanted to try making a futon set. (The Japanese type, 3 piece, padded foldable futon, pillow and cover) I've seen pictures of those floating around the net, and they look really nice.
Poofiemus Posted March 22, 2017 That's a really good find! Homura's chair looks like it is in great condition and is perfectly sized! Oh, no, this one is Homura's chair: This one I actually got brand new from Home Goods. . . but it was originally pink and green with flowers and glitter. Yeah, tacky AF. Took some sanding, some spray paint, and a few other little accents to Homu-ize it. =PI apparently didn't upload the photo of the original factory paint to Flickr, but I've got it somewhere and can probably stick it up tonight. Apparently I DID have the "before" picture, and forgot: Still, goes to show how much of a difference a little TLC can make. So for furniture, it's so, SO worth it to just have some patience and try to find stuff for a decent price, because stuff marketed specifically for BJDs is SO painfully overpriced. ($200 for a doll sofa, Volks? I'm sure they're nice but. . .*fake French accent* I've already GOT one.) In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. etoile Posted March 23, 2017 @ Hikaru Haha, yeah I'm pretty excited to have a body now.... I sort of went crazy when I first joined the hobby and I bought a head and then.... well, one thing lead to another and now I have four. It'll be nice to have at least one together XD Your porch sounds lovely! Do you have pictures of it posted on here somewhere? It sounds like a lot of work went into it! Did you make it in one piece so it could come apart or was it all constructed together? I hope your sister will let you borrow her sewing machine soon! @ Poofiemus Oh wow! Are you kidding me? I can't believe that is the same chair in both pictures! I really like the gear details you did on the back! I'm going to have to start scouring the stores for things I can 'upscale'! sinclair Posted March 23, 2017 That sofa is awesome, I want one. Any labels on it that might help hunting one down? As for the straw roof, find a kitchen broom and cut the brush apart for the hay. We do stuff like this all the time as model railroaders. Painted sandpaper works great as asphalt shingles or dirt roads. Anywho, at some point I will be making a couple bunk beds for my girls to sleep on. I'd love to get or make a sofa for them to sit on. I do have school desks for them, but who wants to sit at those all day long?
Poofiemus Posted March 23, 2017 That sofa is awesome, I want one. Any labels on it that might help hunting one down? I'll check again, but when I got it I tried Googling the few markings it has on the bottom with no luck. Guessing the company that made it is loooooooooong out of business. THat said, there are some decent sofa tutorials around, both on DOA, and Finleo's awesome chaise lounge worklog. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. hikaru1976 Posted March 23, 2017 @ Etoile Yup, I totally understand. I started out with three heads before getting to the first body myself, haha One step at a time though, the bodies are not cheap, so yeah, one at a time. Well, as far as I understand the rules in the forum here, I will eventually be able to post, so I will definitely do so. I might also join you and others here in diy-ing my own sofa, because those are quite expensive at volks, too. And I've already made the rounds in all the thrift stores and salvation army places I'd reckon in the 50km radius from here. Btw, what heads do you have? @ Poofiemus Literally, haha... that pose says it all. It's definitely HER chair.... Well done on the remodel!! @ Sinclair Yes, I feel a bed/sofa project brewing (around May in my case) The kitchen broom idea sounds good! I'll take a look around for those sorts of brooms, I'd probably need about 3 if they're around 10-12 inch wide but it definitely sounds doable from where I'm sitting. Thanks for the advice! etoile Posted March 25, 2017 Haha glad I'm not the only one who kind went head crazy at the beginning! There are so many sculpts that I want, I'm having to pull back a bit so I can get some little things.... You know, like the bodies and wigs and eyes.... That sort of thing. I know this thread is supposed to be mostly about bedrooms and furniture, but what dolls do you have? I'm a bit curious to see everyone's girls XD As of so far, I have two mystery heads (I'm not on one but I'm pretty sure the other is a ddh-10), a modded ddh-01 head that I need to eventually put some more work into and my favorite, a Sheryl Nome head that I was lucky enough to get on here ....There may also be a Rin head that I am kind of obsessed with right now.... I'm thinking I may wait on that till I'm a bit better set up but now that Volks has brought her back..... You'll have to post pictures as soon as you can, if you don't mind doing so! I'd love to see what you are doing with your sofa once you get going. I've seen a few sofas that people have made out of cardboard, polyfill and fabric. Are you thinking of following a tutorial or trying to make your own way?
hikaru1976 Posted March 25, 2017 Nope, nope! You're definitely not the only one, and I'm sure there is a good percentage of people here who likely share such beginnings. Well, I'll try to take a picture of my set up tonight but for now, although these are about a month or two old photos, here are my girls. First off, Erza Yuuki And my own original, Rina I'll post sofa pics once the time to start comes around... probably not before May though. That's awesome! Sheryl is quite nice, but yes Rin is also a very nice head and make... like Saber back in the days of old... As for the mystery heads, let me know once you decide who they will become. MugenTenshinFRD Posted April 6, 2017 I see some nice chairs and sofas for the girls around here. My girls don't have a bedroom, they will have a display case soon. Right now I just own a DD sized pillow, but a bed or sofa would be nice to have. I see SD sofas sometimes too, but they cost like ¥20k-30k. I haven't seen nicely sized mini chairs or sofas at the store yet. Japan 2016 memories 10-2016: Hatsune Miku finally home! geeonek Posted May 10, 2017 I'd love to make a diorama for my DD but still contemplating since it will take a lot of space and I live in a small apartment :/ Maybe one day...
Kalle Posted May 10, 2017 I've been really, really tempted to make a roombox for my girls after seeing the awesome ones on Pretty in Plastic. But hers are for smaller dolls, I believe, so ... whatever I do make is gonna end up huge. xD
hikaru1976 Posted May 13, 2017 Well, since they are usually between 50-60cm representing some 150-180cm or thereabouts... (20-23 inch representing 60-70 inch or 5'-5'10" ) and let's say a small room would be around 3m x 4m (around 10' x 13') that would mean a representative box would be 100x133cm (3'3" x 4'4") My set up is a bit smaller inside an ikea pax closet. I left about 80cm clearance for height, but the area is 75cm in width and about 55cm in depth... that's roughly 29"w x 21"d x 31.5"h. The light is messed up but here's what that fits. baldylox Posted June 2, 2017 Having a room for just your doll stuff is awesome! Your displays and setup are amazing. Nice to see the Monster High girls in there too! And I'm really digging the new Sailor Moon area, it looks so cute! Your girls seem to be enjoying it as well. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
