I LOVE DanganRonpa and always wanna see custom dolls! I'm surprised there isn't more of them around.

 

I think to do her wig you're honestly just gonna have to play the part of bully and hack at it yourself. I'm so bad at cutting wigs that if it were me, I'd pretend I was trying to make her look good and then I'd inevitably screw up and she'd look .... like Mikan, pft.

 

I think her more worried facial expression would be more recognizable as Mikan, but that's just me.

Yay a fellow Danganronpa fan! I know, the lack of anything dollfie related for Danganronpa is a little disappointing considering that it's done fairly well (both in Japan and in western nations) to warrant 3 games and two anime series. I believe the only thing I found dollfie wise for the series, and I stumbled upon it on Taobao, was a Junko outfit for the DDdy.

Aww poor Mikan! I'm going to feel so awful "destroying" a perfectly good wig, but I totally agree with you. I feel like it'd be the best way to tackle the wig. I was planning on buying some heavy duty, dollfie safe, hair wax/gel to try and define the sections of her hair. She has those sort of blocky strands and I feel like that would be the way to go in trying to achieve that look.

 

Thoughts on that idea, and possibly good wigs that come in that sort of wine purple/brown color?

 

I mean I'm so super new to trying customize a dollfie, I'm pretty timid in trying these things out without any advice first. All my girls were pretty happy with how they looked when they arrived and there's only been the need to change their wigs and eyes up. This will be my first real project, and I want to do her justice, because she deserves it.

Honestly this made me laugh a bit, as well as feel a bit more relaxed about attempting to style and cut the wig myself rather than custom ordering one. Because honestly no one would really be able to tell if I had messed up on a section or part of it, her hair is supposed to look like a disaster. So thank you so much for putting my mind at ease about that.

I totally agree with you there, it'd make her super easy to recognize and it's probably my favorite expression on her since it's totally her you know? The problem I was conflicted about was I was worried that I maybe wouldn't like having a worried version of her around 24/7. Giving it some thought however, I've come to like the idea of make her expression the default neutral/worried/sad like in the second reference photo. Plus I can always get another 09 head on my next trip to Tokyo, if I decide I want a different expression for her. It's one of the perks of living in Japan, and I'm super thankful and grateful for the opportunity to live here.

What I really wanted to show you were these amazing custom DR faceups I saw from a chinese user on twitter. I could have sworn I retweeted it but I couldnt find it searching back through my feed. They'd done a few of the characters from the newest game. (Speaking of which, I'd love a doll of Kibo, but that would be almost impossible pft) They seriously looked official, though. They'd custom-made the eyes too. Other than those I've only seen a few Junkos and Komaeda's, though, which surprised me because I honestly would have expected Kirigiri and Nanami to be favourites for dollafying.

I think custom making the eyes is your best best since the DR art style is so striking. You could commission them or do it yourself - I know theres tutorials for that floating around but I dont know much about that either.

I'd previously toyed with the idea of making my own fave (Chihiro Fujisaki) but I just got too many doll plans and cant do all of them. At least not for a while.

Yeah I've decided that's the way I'm going to attempt them. I found an amazing tutorial on YouTube by a fellow forum user (I'm currently blanking on their name though) and I think that the technique they used will do incredibly well for these eyes.

That's totally understandable! Doll plans take time and as someone who has quite a few I understand they can take upwards of years to put together or they get abandoned due to lack of funds or time. UPDATE 5/28/17

 

Hello everyone! It has been quite awhile hasn't it? Due to college and work my life has been pretty hectic, but I finally have some time to sit down and talk about my latest project development!

 

So major project news! I was able to swing by a local hobby shop in my area and gather some of the needed materials for my project. Those of you who live in the states I feel rather bad for you, since the mark up of some of these items online is a total ripoff! Seriously the amount some people are charging for some of this stuff plus shipping is just ridiculous!

 

Anyways! About Mikan, I'm planing on doing her face up this week. I think the way I'm going to go about it is I'll make sure to prime with Mr. Super Clear UV cut Flat first then sketch her face out with pencil very lightly to make sure I get it as symmetrical as possible.

 

Then I'll paint the eyelashes and beauty mark, seal, eyebrows, seal, blush, seal, mouth, seal and then add a slight amount of gloss to the corners of the eyes and corners of the lips.

 

After watching several face up videos on YouTube I feel pretty confident, still I know first face ups don't always turn out the way you want them to. There's obviously a huge learning curve.

 

So yeah that's my current plan as of right now and I hope to get her face up done by Thursday 6/1/17. We'll see though!

 

Also I'm having trouble adding photos as they're apparently too large in file size? If anyone could help me out I'd appreciate it!

Update 7/13/17

 

Ok, so the face-up process has not been as smooth as I hoped it would be. It seems like with any artistic process, practice is going to make perfect, and I have a lot of practicing to do. I've made a total of two attempts so far, the second drying as I type. The trouble I seem to be having is that I'm really struggling with the eyebrows. I keep getting them uneven, and while in the official artwork they are uneven, I sort of would like my dollife version of her have near symmetrical eyebrows. They also seem to be pretty thick still, but I think that's because when I draw I like drawing thicker eyebrows, and unintentionally I seem to be doing the same thing to Mikan's eyebrows.

 

On another note, cleaning the head while wiping the face-up off is WAY harder than people make it out to be. Seriously even with acetone I struggled to get the paint off. Maybe it was because I was really timid in taking it off as to avoid damage but still my goodness it took so much elbow grease to get off.

 

Anyways if someone would be willing to help me out in explaining how to add pictures to a post I could give you all an update of my progress, including the very poor first face up I did and this new better (but still awful imo) face-up. I'm a super newbie when it comes to forum posting, and not very good at HTML stuff.

The easiest way to add pics is to get a Flickr account and upload there, you can then copy paste the share URL of the size you want. I tend to go for the second smallest but you can always preview the post to see if the pics look too big or small.

Oh my goodness thank you so much for referencing their twitter! It was a bit hard to navigate in order to find the dolls in question since I'm avoiding V3 spoilers like the plague, but it was absolutely worth potential spoilers when I finally found them. I love what they did for the face-ups of their dolls and the face-ups are now definitely goals for my next attempt. I'll be following this! I was a pretty huge DR fan back in the day and even though I haven't played any of the newer games, the character designs are always so awesome. I would 100% love to see some photo updates at some point if you're thinking about doing that!

It's crazy. I literally got a can of MSC for roughly $8 locally, where as on ebay I saw it going for as much as $30 per can. That's insane!

I am! I've been working on getting a flickr account set up and fixing my Nikon camera so I can take some decent pictures. As of right now the camera won't turn on, so I'm looking around to see where I could have left the charger cord (I moved earlier in the month so I've misplaced a lot of my things). So as soon as I find it I'll be sure to share photos of my progress with you all!

Update 8/9/17

 

So I finally got a flickr account set up, thanks to Torino for helping me out, and can share some actual update photos of my progress.

 

Mikan's eyes and wig finally came in as well so I'm currently in the process of making a silicone cast of the eyes so I can start making casts in a UV resin, and styling the wig I got using fellow forum user doll-mage aka Attlebridge's tutorial on how to style wigs with hair gel!

Thank you so much! It's really been a challenge trying to attempt some of the gravity defying strands! Seriously it involved several hair clips and over half a bottle of hair gel, but I just finished the wig and I'm really happy with the way it came out (seriously I just checked the forum and noticed your super kind message as soon as I put Mikan back up on the shelf to dry)! I'll make sure to snap some pictures as soon as it's dry and can take off the protective cling wrap.

I'm looking forward to seeing the next face-up and the custom eyes, too.

I believe I'll be making them a slight combination of both. I'm more fond of smaller eyes in dolls, so I believe the irises will be oval shaped, but quite round at the same time. I hope that made sense lol but if not I should have a sketch of them within the next few days since my Wacom Tablet is set up once again.

This will be her final wig if I can't find a slightly better color match, but for now I really like it! I'm really happy with how the style came out!

 

Wow, the gravity-defying hair is really remarkable--I didn't know that could be achieved with a wig, particularly one of that length, having only ever seen it with molded figures!

 

Mikan's second face-up looks good, too. Your linework has refined a great deal just from the first face-up to the second! I love how much she is resembling the character artwork.

 

I'm glad my comments help encourage your work! I've found that it's easy to become frustrated with projects because creative work is hard and can seem unrewarding, especially if, like many creative people, one is prone to focus on the points needing improvement to the exclusion of the points where one has succeeded. (and this is also why I'm a lot more motivated if I'm making an outfit for someone else's doll versus my own, because seeing the input from the commissioner at each stage of the process gives me motivation to keep going and trying my best. Sadly this means my own custom dolls don't have nearly all the nice things they ought to >__< maybe I should start a thread for their projects...)

In general, I'm very glad that communities like this exist so that artists and customizers and audiences can support and inspire one another.

Yeah I know the poor dear really does need some clothes problem is I'm really terrible at making patterns, and I really don't have the funds at the moment to commission her outfit. So I'm either going to have to really work on pattern drafting or wait until I can build up more funds. Either way I hope to obtain her complete outfit within the next few months so stay tuned for future updates!

Ah thank you very much sugarpill! It really was a fun challenge to tackle and I'm still making adjustments here and there but overall I'm very pleased with how it turned out! I think Mikan is also pretty thrilled with it!

She's not done quite yet, as I'm hoping to at least redo her face-up to make sure I get the eyebrows smooth and even as well as making sure to get her eyelashes thin enough to my liking. Mini Update 8/28/17

I have a mock up of Mikan's eyes done. I'm not happy with them yet as I have to fix quite a few details, however I still want to update my progress. It's a good way to stay motivated and positive about Mikan's progress, you know? Plus I love dobleepenting this, It'll be a great record to come back to once I start another project.

 

Also I'm leaving for the states (for a five week feeler period for college living yay) in 2 weeks, and won't have much time to update. However, the good news is that my grandmother (who I will be staying with and is a master seamstress) has agreed to help me sew Mikan's outfit. So instead of spending $250 for her outfit I'll probably pay closer to $30 in materials and actually learn how to make patterns and sew on a doll scale. So I'm super excited about that!

 

One last thing before we get to the eye mock-up is that I will be re-doing Mikan's face-up before I leave, so there will at least be one more major update before I go.

 

So without further ado, the very rough eye mock-up, It is super small at 22 by 22 millimeters so it looks pretty pixilated, and I'm going to have to work on getting it right but I'm very happy with the colors and shape so that's a positive!

I've finally got the first pair of eyes done that I'm semi happy with.

 

They're a little too big for my liking and not deep enough of a color (they turned out pretty pale) but overall I like how well I did for my first attempt.

Your mikan is so good! I've been planning on doing DD Mahiru or Miu, but I'm not getting started until I find someone I can commission the clothes to (especially Miu, the straps and boots are *whew*)
