DD vs SD

I have many Super Dollfies! I have one SD girl, one SD boy, two SD13 girls, four SD13 boys, one SD Graffiti girl, and one MSD boy. SD13 Link was my first BJD, and he is still my favorite. I didn't get my first DD until 2012!

I do not as I still find them somewhat not really creepy anymore but rather visually unappealing. I have noticed it changes the longer I've been in the DD hobby. Perhaps seeing them in the Volks News has something to do with it. I will admit that there was one faceup I saw on Volks USA's site once that I did find lovely and wouldn't mind getting it, but there wasn't any info on it. And I really do think it's how the faceups are done that I don't like as I've seen a couple photos of DD's with more SD like faceups and was rather put off on them. Has made me wonder what I would think of a SD with a DD style faceup.

I've always wanted to get my own SD, specifically a sweet dream ver. At first I thought SDs were too creepy for me, since they are meant to be more 'realistic' looking. But I started to change my mind when I started to see really good SD's volks puts out as examples for their full choice.

For some reason I've liked the droopy eyed sorta SDs.

 

I kind of wish Volks made an official sweet dream version of any DD but the only one closest is the Nemu Asakura Memorial Wedding Version.

 

But sadly her eyes are closed all the way.

Volks' earliest SDs had more anime style faceups. Personally I am not a big fan of Volks' current airbrushy SD faceups, but that seems to be the style right now. Occasionally I will see one I like, but there are many I don't care for at all. I like my dolls to have more defined eyebrows, and I don't like mouths that are dark inside. I don't mind the dark spots in the corners of the mouth if they are done nicely. My Kimmie is based on an anime character, so I was very happy she had a more defined faceup without the airbrushed look. I wouldn't have liked her as much otherwise.

 

Hiro's faceup has been redone. His original one was quite worn down. I don't adore the eyebrows on his new faceup, but he looks and feels like himself, so I can live with them.

I used to not like 'the more realistic BJDs' at all but recently I like them a lot. I tend to gravitate more towards smiley looking sculpts though cos I still don't like the scowly brooding guys that seem to be so popular, I just wanna tell them to lighten up.

I really wanna try and get at least one SD while I'm here, and I'm thinking of entering for the upcoming rerelease of Super Dollfie Cute Renee cos she's flippin adorable.

Unfortunately even though I like the look of a lot of the bigger SDs, they're just too big and expensive for me to justify. The limited ones usually cost over $1000, and while there's a full choice sculpt I absolutely adore　(F-69 ;-;) SD full choice also costs over 80,000 yen and I rarely like the Full Choice outfits. Plus I got the chance to hold a SD recently and was shocked at how heavy they were. I still really want Crobidoll Zion, but he might be the only 1/3 resin I get because that weight is just too bleepbersome for me. DDs are so much more easy and convenient.

 

I like the weight on the MSDs/SDMs/SDcutes though, it feels kind of nice and isn't too heavy (even though its still heavier than a DD). I was considering getting a fullchoice SDM while I'm here but on closer inspection the baby hands on them just bug me too much for the character I wanted to make (considering not all the mini heads are that childlike its weird to me to see the less childish heads with those pudgey hands) SDCute seems to be exactly what I want, but unfortunately its a lot harder to get ahold of.

I'm more of a SD collector than DD actually. Just got my second full DD, after getting my first a couple of years ago, but have managed to collect 20+ Super Dollfie (and a few resin dolls from other brands) since my first one over a decade ago. I've always loved DDs though! Always wanted a DD with big boobs, so of course the first one I got was a S bust (Mirai), followed by a SS bust(Snow Miku, now headless) >.<

Which is also why I felt I had to get at least a M bust when I went to Japan last month.
