NatsukiP Posted April 6, 2017 Hey guys, I tend to lurk on the forums a lot, but I wanted to share this little project I'm working on. Its an anime boy head as the title implies. The look I was going for is a grumpy type of boy with a youthful look, I guess similar to the tsundere type of character. I don't really mind you guys giving critiques, but really I just want to know your opinions on the head itself. This was the sketch of the character Here is how the head looked after sometime of refining the shape And here he is with 14mm glass eyes And this is how he looks now, I added ears but I still a ways to go You can also see more on my instagram, it shows pretty much my process when it comes to making doll heads https://www.instagram.com/natsukip_madhudoll/ So what do you guys think or feel about the head so far
Yukamina Posted April 7, 2017 Very cool, reminds me of my old doll sculpting projects. Do you have any plans for him once you finish the prototype? My Etsy Shop ~~~ My DeviantArt
Ie-Aster Posted April 7, 2017 If you could release him in vinyl, I would very seriously consider making a purchase, though I'd have to see a side profile to be sure. I like how he came out very much. In fact, he looks like he'd work very well for the character for whom I'm currently using a Smart Doll Eiji. I like that he looks youthful but not childlike--in contrast to Len and Kirito, who both look like young teenagers at the oldest. I look forward to seeing the continuation of the project! ...There...isn't any way for independent artists to cast in vinyl, is there? I suppose it would be prohibitively expensive even if one had preorders paid in advance ... At home: Mei (DDP Lucy custom), Aku (DDB Takane custom) En route: L. It would be hard to get your hands on the equipment needed, but you could probably commission Obitsu to make them. Edited May 25, 2017 by Guest
Mario Posted April 7, 2017 ...There...isn't any way for independent artists to cast in vinyl, is there? I suppose it would be prohibitively expensive even if one had preorders paid in advance ... I actually had made a custom head myself(3d printed, and fully painted). I did wish to find some kind of way to make it into soft vinyl. But there is absolutely 0 dobleepentation about it. I was advised the reason why this is not public information is because of the compounds to create soft vinyl can also be made as an explosive. I tried to find some company which provides the compound(or creates a non-explosive aka stable compound) but all companies I went to here in California are dead or had shut down. Honestly the best way is to find some company which already produces the heads. In this case as K-2 said, asking Obitsu.
NatsukiP Posted April 8, 2017 Very cool, reminds me of my old doll sculpting projects. Do you have any plans for him once you finish the prototype? Thank you! Hopefully I can send him to a casting company, but I just need to find one, who is the most accessible. I like how he came out very much. In fact, he looks like he'd work very well for the character for whom I'm currently using a Smart Doll Eiji. I like that he looks youthful but not childlike--in contrast to Len and Kirito, who both look like young teenagers at the oldest. Thank you very much! I'm really glad that the sculpt is translating well enough that you see him as youthful. Hopefully I can compete with Volks and Smartdoll Just kidding...at the moment And in regards to making the head in vinyl, I hope I could achieve that goal, and was seriously considering Obitsu, but right now I'm not too sure, since the head is being constructed so it would work with resin best. Not sure if I described that well, but I'm planning to make the head a faceplate and then a head back so you won't have to struggle when dressing him, and maybe make it easier to make the other heads, if they all use the same head-back. But I do want to contact Obitsu on their quotes, however, I want to have a resin version and vinyl version so people could choose what they prefer. @Ie-Aster here is that side profile, also I will be updating with progress photos so you guys can see the process too. So far what I have are some progress shots of what I did tonight. I tried to shave down his chin, but I ended up ruining it and had to sculpt it again. I also refined his jawline so it was more define and added more clay to his lips so they would add more definition to his profile. His eyes got messed up, but I can just go back and fix it. I do feel that his chin is too soft, since I really want to make it pointy, but I'll see if I can sand it. 20170408_024745937_iOS by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr 20170408_024713653_iOS by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr 20170408_024704700_iOS by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr
NatsukiP Posted April 8, 2017 Just wanted to bring another quick update, I ended up not needing to sand to get his chin pointy, but just move the clay before it dries. I also tried his head on an Akagidoll 66cm ver.2 boy body just to see the proportions. I don't think it looks bad, but the head looks a little awkward in my opinion. Maybe it's because the head backing isn't complete so there's nothing to hold it in place, or my hand slid it slightly too low. The neck cirbleepference is about 10.8 cm by the way. Ie-Aster Posted April 9, 2017 Thanks for posting the side profile! I like that there is a gentle curve to the line of the nose--it looks much more natural than if it were flat. I like the way his lips look with the added clay. The 3/4 angle looks very nice overall. For the shot on the body, is his chin pulled inward towards the neck (head tilted kind of down)? It looks sort of like that to me, but it's hard to tell. That might be why it looks a bit strange. Also, it may be slightly turned as it looks like more volume is visible on the right cheek than the left, but that could be the lighting as well. I definitely encourage you to get in touch with Obitsu. I hope that the project will be able to come to fruition in vinyl. At home: Mei (DDP Lucy custom), Aku (DDB Takane custom) En route: L. Yea, I've noticed that his face has some asymmetry, so I'm going to see if I fix some of it so it won't look noticeable in the final project. I think his head was pulled down, but I'm not too sure though. Here are some updates from today and yesterday. I wanted to try and make his head back flush with the head, but I think I need to ajust his head shape a little, I don't know, his head looks really circluar. Also did an ear, just need to do the other one. Made his head back flush with the face plate and attempted the ear. Hopefully this one doesn't fall off like the others. #madhudoll #bjd #abjd #bjdmaking #bjdhead #premierclay #dollmaking #bjdsculpting #dollstagram by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr Warning shirtless dolly Here, his head is sitting on the body with a piece of putty to prevent it from sliding off because the head is not strung on the body. I also am seeing that his nose is crooked, so that'll need adjustments. His eyes are still a little wonky, hopefully when I get a dremel, I can shape them better. I also messed around with the lips, but I'm going to probably leave them because some of my tools are packed up. Realized that with a hoodie you can't see the proportions clearly. This is my head on the Akagidoll 66cm ver,2 body. The body is slimmer than most 65cm bodies, but the neck is 10.8 cm. by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr Side view. I think I'm going to make the neck opening larger to accommodate for larger necks. The putty is keeping the head from sliding back because it's just sitting on the neck not strung. by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr

NatsukiP Posted May 25, 2017 Oh my gosh, thank you guys for your kind words!!! I wasn't able to work on him for some time because my family was moving, however, I was able to get a few things done on him the last few days and I even got two eye beveling tools from Volks so his eyes can fit better. So here are the photos from the last few days I got to work him. Here he is with a 14mm eye, this was after I beveled his eyes, I also re-worked his lips because I didn't like how uneven they were. Errgghhhh by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr Here's an update on his side profile and three quarters view Errgghhhh by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr Errgghhhh by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr Errgghhhh by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr And I wanted to do a mock faceup on him to see how to make his face look masculine-ish, he doesn't look grumpy at all for this one I want to add option face ups like how some companies do with an 'a', 'b' option. the poor boy still doesn't have ears hopefully I can make them properly so they don't fall off and I lose them Errgghhhh by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr Doll head by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr

NatsukiP Posted November 9, 2019 (edited) Edit: I forgot to mention but I am always happy to hear any critique or suggestions! Mods please feel free to do whatever you need to for this post if it’s been too long since my last post and this post. For the past two years I’ve been pretty on and off with my anime boy, with a lot of my focus going into more realistic featured sculpts, however I wanted to give an update of hows he’s been doing. All the sanding and modifying of his face after not touching him for a year has definitely changed his appearance for the cuter to say the least....but I do have another adventure to show, a sculpt that reflects a more mature look along side the original and my more realistic sculpt to show a comparison for size. I have to say though, the mature sculpt looks like my anime boy when I first started sculpting him. Edited November 9, 2019 by NatsukiP 1
NeeP Posted November 16, 2019 Even though it has been some time between posts, I am glad to see an update. I am on the lookout for a more mature anime boy sculpt myself, but I think both of your anime heads are looking good. And your realistic head is rather fantastic. I hope to see more updates. Niki P. I have to give the sculptor some slack though, coming back to this project was hard because there’s such a fine line between good aesthetics and the face being really flat haha. The more I sand the flatter their faces become, if I’m not careful they might become 2-d! 😂 but I hope I can post progress on them being more finished soon! NatsukiP Posted December 26, 2019 (edited) Omg I owe you guys like so many updates....😅 I have been working on S-san for the past couple of weeks and I am pretty happy with the point he is at, still have to re adjust his eyes so he is not too crossed eyed. The mature head is having his whole face reconstructed to have more structured features. Here is how s-san looks currently, with some makeshift eyes and a wig, his head fits a bit weird on the Akagi doll 66cm body since the head backing is meant for a 12.5 cm neck versus the 11cm neck Akagi doll has. But I will fix that soon with a proper head backing Untitled by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr His side profile Untitled by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr And here's a cool pic of him 😂 Untitled by NatsukiPHOTO, on Flickr I have all of my in progess shots on Flickr currently and instagram for the highlight photos for now. I have a question for you guys, would you guys be happier if you can use standard eyes (20mm animetic) for S-san versus trying to find custom sized eyes for a smaller eyes. I currently have the problem of him being crossed-eyed and his eye wells on the side of his head being too thin for comfort. I hope to receive a package from VolksUSA soon to try on some 20mm animetic eyes so I can better show what my current issue is. As the size I thought would be a better fit is 18mm. p.s. does anyone know how to attach an instagram link into a post? edit: I got it, thank you so much @cfx Edited December 26, 2019 by NatsukiP
