Operation FixWig - Help and Suggestions please!

Recommended Posts

As some of you may know, my Miku's head was given to me by a friend who didn't want her. I asked if she had her default clothes and wig as I was willing to buy them, and she managed to dig them up after new year cleaning. She said that the condition was so bad she didn't want to charge me, but I felt bad for taking it for free - I mean she'd already given me the head, and I was keen to try and fix the stuff as best I could - and so she let me have the lot for 3000 yen.

Now, the outfit has definitely seen better days but it's salvagable, it's mostly lose threads and skuff marks.

The wig though is a mess of tangles and is very frizzy.

I'll post a pic of it later but it's quite a mess. I'm going to try my best to return it to its former glory, but if I can't i guess I'll just buy one from CotinDoll.

I've been looking for tutorials on restoring frizzy doll hair but I thought I'd ask here too, most of the tutorials are for barbies and such and maybe this is a dumb question, but would those same techniques work on a DD wig? I'm not sure if the material is different. Also, several tutorials mentioned using a hairdryer and that seems a bit risky.

Have you ever restored a frizzy wig? What do you suggest? I did let it soak overnight in a solution of wig shampoo and water and it's currently drying, I have no idea how much that will help though!

I don't have any answers either (Hence why I bought a 2nd Miku wig on eBay.) just some ideas. Since they are heat resistant wigs (AFAIK), I thought about holding the wig and pouring really hot water down the tail, from top to bottom in hopes that the weight and force of the water would straighten it back out as it flowed down the tail. If that didn't work, the new Volks wig oil mist stuff is awesome. I bought two bottles when Volks USA had it and sprayed it in a new Snow Miku wig I bought and have had no frizzy tail at all. It does make the wig feel oily, but I never noticed it leaving anything behind on my hands. I even was a little heavy handed putting it on (4 sprays per tail instead of two.). I'm thinking of washing Miku's original wig with warm water and once it drys using this newer stuff and seeing if that fixes it before I go with the super hot water.

Hmm, do you know what kind of fiber it is? Most of my experience is with My Little Ponies, which have nylon hair.

Just wanted to let you know that I did manage to tame this wig!

I think the overnight soak did help - after that I went through it with a metal comb and two spray bottles - one had a solution of mostly water with some Azone doll oil spray, and the other was 100% doll oil spray. I just had to go through each tiny section of each twintail very slowly, and had to cut out the more stubborn knots.

This is the end result:

Of course it got frizzy again pretty quick, but nowhere near as bad. I'm going to get a Tangleteaser next time I'm at Volks though.

Wow, that's a big difference from the before pic I saw. Congrats on getting it all taken care of!

I haven't bothered with my Miku wig as the Snow Miku wig she is wearing has been rather well behaved. But now one of her eyes has fallen out (Didn't think that was possible with how Volks hot glues them in place.) I have to take her wig off to fix her eyes. I might as well clean her default wig so she can wear it again like she has been asking to.

Big improvement on the Miku wig. It looks better than either of mine, so it's probably time I put some time into them.

One bit of advice I have read is when removing tangles start at the bottom and work up. That is the only way to remove tangles from those tails in my experience.

As far as eyes and hot glue it definitely seems to become easier to losen over time. It's a pain getting eyes out of a new DD, but my older ones all it takes is gentle pressure and they pop free.

You can get silicone ear plugs at a grocery store, roll them between your palms to make them into a string, then wrap them around the eye to fix it back into place. Or you can get the Dollfie eye putty. I think the VolksUSA Facebook has a tutorial for using that.

Either way having soft putty makes repositioning the eyes for expressive poses a snap. At least on the soft cap heads or an SD.

Edit: One last thing. I love that photo. Miku always looks her best when she looks like she is being spoiled.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction
