Well, I will say, I'm personally happy if there's less interest in the Nier dolls, since it'll mean it'll be easier to acquire if I like them

Agreed!

I hope they do sell well when/if they are released. Currently, video gaming is my primary hobby (next to doll collecting) and I would love to see other video game-based dolls in the future. Even if they do well they may not make any further gaming dolls, but hey, I can dream.

Volks does gaming dolls from time to time, so I doubt these will be the last two. I am thinking Volks is fairly good at gauging market demand. They've made a few slip-ups like with Mio Honda, and the Kagamine twins, but I don't think they have failed to sell out a doll. The endless stock of Kagamine's didn't prevent them from releasing Luka either.

They're also going to be looking primarily at demand in the Japanese market.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

Freyja Wion, who is still available on the international site, ~2 years later, may be an exception.

Oh yeah I totally forgot about her, but I think it's only been about a year and a half. She was Dec 2016. Freya is a good example of how bad Volks can be at photographing their own products. She looks a lot better in owner photos. The Volks photo's make the blush on her cheeks look pretty extreme, but if you can look past that she has a cute face.

Yes, Wolf are right about the gaming dolls. I forgot that the Idol Masters can be considered gaming. And KOS-MOS.

Lol. I still find that interesting. I adore my Len and Rin, much more so than my Snow Miku. Maybe they thought they would get higher sales because Len was the first boy Dollfie Dream*?

Either way, I am mostly excited for 9S, but kind of like Rin and Len, it would be hard for me to buy one without the other. Lol.

*Edit: Changed "dollfie" to "Dollfie Dream"

Yeah iM@S really is a gaming property at it's core, although I am sure they rake in the cash with the concerts too. In point of fact Nanao is from Million Live which doesn't have an associated anime series yet, and may not anytime soon.

I don't really get it either, both are great.

Just an observation, but the Xenosaga DD releases were 10 years after the games. While Kos-Mos has been the subject of a lot of kits and PVC figures over the years, and was probably a safe bet for a DD, the games themselves were old news.

Dolls like Rin and Len, we don't know how well they sold, only that there were a lot of extras, right?

I have a theory about why that may have happened with this pair. Volks made them lottery dolls, and I suspect a lot of potential owners would want both, and possibly want neither if they couldn't get both. Since you had to enter a separate lottery for each, it's quite feasible this led to both of the following

  • People who entered for both, only won one, didn't want to have only one so didn't pay
  • People who got friends to enter for them to increase chances, and since there were a lot of winners, again dolls that didn't get paid for.

It also may be Volks overestimated demand based on how Miku had sold. As a Vocaloid character, she's a lot more popular than the others, especially in Japan.

All we really know is that they were for sale on the Volks website for a long time, and at some point they removed the limited tag from the web store entries. They were offered several times for Vocaloid special events too.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. So there really wasn't much demand after the fact either.

My personal take, which has no relevance on what anyone else may think: I like Miku and Luka as characters, while Len and Rin are boring to me in comparison. Taken just as a doll, Rin is so very cute though. I have no real opinion on Len because I'm just not interested in boy dolls.

Ren makes a really good girl. Early after the release a well known Japanese face-up artist sold a really nicely done female Len on YJA, and it was impressive how feminine that face looked.

Like others here, I feel that maybe Volks has missed the train now. Gamers can be very loyal and N:A definitely created a huge fandom (especially for cosplay). But I'm not sure a doll released later this year, or not until next even, would garner as much attention anymore. It's not going to be like Hatsune Miku, who is an ongoing merchandise. N:A is all there is and Yoko Taro has left the company. There's not going to be any continuation.

Still, I'm looking forward to seeing what they have created.

Weird, because when I was in Japan a week ago I saw a lot of Nier stuff. A lot. Just because people aren't frothing over it constantly doesn't mean it's died. And just even because something did die down doesn't mean people won't be willing to foam at the mouth again and open their wallets. I know I will lol

Waiting for eternity for Volks to release more Idolm@ster girls.

I was at a cosplay event last weekend and there were lots of 2B/9S cosplayers, so I suppose the fandom still lives on even though not as many people are playing the game anymore. The FB group for the game is very quiet these days. I think I was basing my assumptions on that.

Volks is going to base any decisions on the Japanese market anyways. If Neir stuff is still big there then that's a good sign.

Personally I do hope they're not SD styled... I just don't think volks's SD art style will mix well with the sort of look the characters have. That and uh... A lot of volks's SDs give me a serious uncanny valley problem.I'd really love to see more mature DD faces though!

Pretty much the entire aesthetics of them. More realistic features but with exaggerated proportions i.e. huge eyes and lips. The overdone makeup. That so many are made to look sad in some way. Scarier are the ones with really strange proportions like small eyes that are really far apart, and the animal-esque ones like Dearmine are the stuff of nightmares for me.

Once I saw a resin girl that was really pretty and had pretty realistic proportions, but no idea who made it and it was like the 1% exception for everything else I see.

Yeah pretty much it was the same for me with the sole exceptions being Volks Ami Ayase, and Belldandy. Ami has more realistic proportions and much softer makeup. I do kind of like their June Tachibana too. The Tokyo Boys Story line seems to favor a more realistic look.

I saw Ami Ayase looking at pages for some Volks outfits and she is pretty. Belldandy is borderline for me; whoever it was here that took her outfit and wig and made a DD of her--I liked that a lot better.

Hey guys I... personally think we might want to stop discussing this til there's an update so we don't get people's hopes up... plus it’s getting very off-topic. I get that people are impatient but still it’s kinda counterproductive at this point. I didn’t want to post and cause the thread to be updated again but now that it’s apparently ‘let’s bash other dolls’ time I think it’s gone a little too far.

Sorry wasn't intending to bash anything. I was asked a question which I tried to answer. Everyone has different tastes in dolls like anything else and I'm not putting anyone else down.

But yeah it's OT and I won't comment further.

yeah, every single time i log on and see this post at the top i think that there is news... then i come and see that everyone is talking about things completely unrelated. i am only saying this to go along with what torino said, so that people will know that torino was accurate in their opinion.

i get panicked almost every day when i see this topic being talked on so much, because i get worried that i didn't save enough money for her.

i wouldn't mind if people were talking about the nier dolls specifically, but it was disappointing to come on the thread and no one is talking about them. if the thread is going to be active, personally, i'd like it to at least somehow relate to the nier dolls. like maybe your own ideas, wishes and opinions about them?

however, i do think these conversations are valid and interesting... i don't feel like anyone was bashing dolls, because everyone has their opinions and they can be stated in a mature way. but maybe it can be made on another topic and let us keep this one to talk about nier.
