Monty Posted September 1, 2018 Well, just my 2 cent. If cortex works anywhere close to material they use for plamod, then doing a face up on cortex can proof extreme difficult or annoying, as pastels and pencils dont stick on those very well. I believe the point of the cortex is just cheaper dolls that can be made quicker which I assume is mostly for the other licenses he has of stuff like marvel/dc/whatever and not so much faceups etc. But didn’t he also say that any of the parts are interchangeable? Isn’t it the same frame? I assume you can stick a regular head on there. *twitter*instagram*art*
cfx Posted September 1, 2018 Yeah, and recently he's been posting about selling a hybrid; Cortex body with vinyl head and vinyl boobs. Danny's never sold blank heads and anecdotally custom faceups on Smart Doll seem far less common than for DD, just based on things I see on instagram, twitter, and flickr. MegWesley Posted September 1, 2018 I don't see many Smart Dolls being customized either. That might be why he puts so much emphasis on putting out new girls with the same sculpt but different face ups. Most of the customization I see is with eyes, wigs, and clothes. I think it is a nice thing that he showed that the Cortex material and the vinyl material is interchangeable. I was wondering about the "squish factor" of the new material recently and if parts would be interchangeable or not. I do wonder if he will sell all the different breast sizes in the Cortex materials or not. Also, what material are the hands and feet made out of anyway? Is it the normal vinyl? Yumeiro Posted September 1, 2018 I don't see many Smart Dolls being customized either. That might be why he puts so much emphasis on putting out new girls with the same sculpt but different face ups. It's hard to do/annoying when you have to buy a full doll, and remove the existing faceup. If he sold blank heads (outside of the outlet) there would probably be more custom SmartDolls. cfx Posted September 1, 2018 [...]I do wonder if he will sell all the different breast sizes in the Cortex materials or not. Also, what material are the hands and feet made out of anyway? Is it the normal vinyl? Yeah I haven't seen any comments about extra parts like the different breast sizes; he's commented from the beginning about those being interchangeable with the vinyl so that might be all. I don't know about the hands but the feet are the Asaflex material because he has shown them here: A while back he commented the two versions have a similar feel implying a similar level of squishiness, but since he's talked a lot about the injection doll being more rigid overall. So either the material changed from the initial testing, or perhaps the feel comment only meant how the material feels when you rub your finger over it and it still feels soft that way. Kumi Posted September 4, 2018 Introducing “Smart Doll Hybrid” - a cross between Cortex and the Soft Vinyl version.Hybrid has soft vinyl (slush casting) head and bewbs while the rest of the body is injection molded with the Asaflex material. The price point will be in between Cortex and vinyl. Well, we may need another topic: Injection and vinyl
magique Posted September 4, 2018 I highkey wish he didn't have such a fixation on boobs so we could have a cheaper hybrid. I just want the variety of heads, geez.
Panda_Dolliess Posted September 5, 2018 I highkey wish he didn't have such a fixation on boobs so we could have a cheaper hybrid. I just want the variety of heads, geez. While it does seem like a weird boob fixation, boobs are actually among the interchangeable parts category. Same as hands and feet. The Cortex was design to be compatible with extra part that already exist, so i don't think he's going to make all of the extra parts into Cortex.

Ah, no, I just meant that I wish the hybrid didn't come with a vinyl bust so it would cheaper. I have no problem with vinyl extra parts.
Kumi Posted September 6, 2018 But You know, the hybrid is not the Cortex. It will be a different product. The Cortex will be all plastic.
MegWesley Posted September 7, 2018 So, it would really be a choice between if you want a vinyl head or a plastic head since the busts are interchangeable anyway. That might be a tough choice for some (mostly, me because I'm indecisive anyway ) Home: Hatsune Miku ♡
Tira Posted September 9, 2018 Well, just my 2 cent. If cortex works anywhere close to material they use for plamod, then doing a face up on cortex can proof extreme difficult or annoying, as pastels and pencils dont stick on those very well. What you do is put down a base layer of sealant before painting. It's almost impossible to face-up resin or ABS dolls without it. Vinyl can be painted without the sealant, but it's not really a good idea; the sealant also makes it easier to remove the face-up without staining your doll's head. RainbowNanaki Posted September 15, 2018 I know I'm probably in the minority on this forum, but I am so incredibly excited for the cortex dolls! As someone who loves sewing and crocheting, it would be amazing to own a 1/3 doll that I would be able to use as a mannequin without the constant worry of staining or indents forming in the vinyl. That, and I have no issues with putting together a kit (in fact I have an internet buddy who regularly assembles Gundams that I might be able to get some tips from), so the even lower price point of an unassembled doll is pretty rad. ...I'm already imagining all the cute things I could make, oh gosh He/Him --- I like making stuff --- Please don't make sexual/lewd comments about my dolls, thank you! At Home: Tyler (Akira 2nd), Adrienne (Smart Doll Mirai Cortex), Bryan (Smart Doll Eiji, cinnamon ver.) Waiting For: Nothing atm Wishlist: Smart Doll Crimson Kai in tea skin

demonmiko Posted October 24, 2018 I'm definitely in the camp of yay! to Cortex and Cortex hybrids. I'm a relative newbie to vinyl dolls anyway, so coming from resin, the seams on these guys look downright invisible. I've only recently gotten into SmD and brought an Ebony Futaba home via trade, but I would love a minimal staining option as my girl has some noticeable staining. The lower price point, to me, is a bonus as my ultimate deciding factor is whether or not I like the doll sculpt. So go, Cortex Kanata! It'd be even better if Danny starts selling bodies separately or offers it as an option with blank heads.

magique Posted October 28, 2018 I just hope they'll be released soon! I really want a cortex. The major turn off of vinyl for me is the staining.
Panda_Dolliess Posted November 7, 2018 Danny made an Instagram post stating that pre assembled Cortexes will be made available at Anime NYC. So, we could technically see customer images of the Cortex as early as November 16th. I'm super excited!!
cfx Posted November 12, 2018 Cortex is on display at Mirai store so various people have taken pictures. Here are some tweets with pics showing what the seams look like: And Danny posted this lol:
Bellatrix Posted November 12, 2018 I might have missed that, but wasn't Danny going to sell the first protos of Cortex for 1000 yens at the store? Did it happen? If so, when? ✩ 𝓥𝓲𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓶 𝓸𝓯 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓑𝓮𝓵𝓵𝓪𝓭𝓸𝔁 ✩
cfx Posted November 12, 2018 I never saw anything else about that either. Currently he's going to sell assembled ones at Anime NYC for $550 but they still have vinyl heads and come with full sets of clothes so that says nothing about what the final price will be. magique Posted November 12, 2018 Ooh, he posted a pic of tea and cocoa cortex parts on Instagram. Looking good! I'm really looking forward to getting a cortex girl.
