Injection vs vinyl

Recommended Posts

The injection model may be cheaper, but it doesn't mean the profit will be smaller. Either way, Danny will rather see increase of overall sales and it even might boost the vinyl sales a little because of popularity. Who knows.

I'm guessing he might lose -some- sales from the vinyl counterpart, for example ME But seriously, I mean, people who would buy the expensive doll if there's no alternative option, but if there is, they would prefer the cheaper one because it's easier on the wallet. But I imagine he's already calculated this and doesn't think there's enough danger not to put out a cheaper product. Perhaps he has also considered that if a lot of people start preffering the plamo version to the vinyl version (but his profits are about the same / higher), he might retire vinyl (I'm just saying he might have considered this as an option, not that he'd do it, or that -I- think he will).

Also, Monster Highs are similar and no one is complaining about parts flying off My ABS doll has a system like that for how the headcap attaches to the head and it's actually much harder to pull the headcap off than my Dollfie Dreams or resin dolls (that only use magnets). Think of how DD parts like hands and shoulders fit together, they're usually tight enough to keep together.

If they're really the same hardness as the vinyl then I'm definitely interested.

I'd be excited to see the character dolls that come out of that. I also really want to see how the injection molded dolls come out and how much they'll cost. I'm kinda confused on the materials involved, because I haven't owned any vinyl dolls before, haha. As long as it's decently cheaper, though, I'd probably get one. C:

I'm excited to see what these dolls are going to sell at, and if they are going to be sold as the kits that you can put together yourself like he's been talking about doing. If so, that's listed on his site at 38,000 yen, so cheaper, but still a little pricey to be easily affordable.

Fingers crossed for a new collector-friendly price on these... I really like the idea of injection molded girls! I have a few Obitsu and a Hujoo 60cm ABS girl here at home and they're all great. I like not feeling worried they'll stain, heh.

I'm so hyped *-*

Can't wait to know how much they'll be, if they're about 200 € I could actually afford my adored Cherry without having to save up for another year *-*

If the seams aren't too terrible on the injection version, I'll definitely get this instead. The lower price point will also be much easier to justify to my mom!

I'm curious to see what the finished surface of the injection molded dolls is like and how it will feel compared to the vinyl - I'm glad to see that it doesn't look shiny; I was expecting a finish like the hard Obitsu bodies have.

It'll be very interesting to see how well it stands up to stains too. If it proves to be more resistant to staining, then I can see me picking up a few injection molded Smart Doll girls in the future.

I feel like I arrived super late to the realization party, but does it look like the injection mold works with a face plate system for the head? Cause I didn't see any places where screws would fit to latch the head shut (like a Pullip). Face plates are my jam.

If it's true, I wonder how that's gonna hold up. Since it does have to be quite firm to not snap or crack in the event of possible frequent removal.

To be honest as much as I love vinyl, the harder body, and the lack of staining is so tempting. OTL

Danny just posted a couple of videos showing the Cortex's structure and it seems that the breast part has a plate system like the face... I wonder if he will release the other breast option parts compatible with Cortex since it seems that the vinyl version won't fit on it

I asked about it some time ago and you can find Danny's answer below.

I guess that the bust part has a plate system because of the nature of injection molding itself (where you need to have two "open" pieces, otherwise you won't be able to remove the part from its form - or sth like this ).

I'm sorry but I don't have the permission to post links yet

But if you google "Instagram danny choo" it should direct you to his page, the video I was talking about is one of his latest posts.

Hope it helps a bit...

Super cool! I think I was deceived by a photo he posted of a prototype (I guess) where the back part seemed to be one solid piece instead of having the regular torso joint

Literally cannot wait to see that price tag. There seem to be no downsides to this method of doll making - especially cause i like to dress my girls in long outfits. The seams don't seem too noticeable either way. I really want one. It'd be so much easier to justify!

I wonder if he'll offer the USB hub torso in this version as well? Because I've been toying with the idea of making a robot girl with that torso and if she had seam lines that would totally be ok for her. lol Heck, she'd flaunt them probably. I do wonder how they would hold up to heat though..He did mention there would be some flexibility to the injection molded smart dolls and I'm so curious what that's like!

I also want to know if it will be subjected to dye transfer as well because I reeeeeally love Gothic fashion and black outfits in general and if the Cortex can't be stained it'll be a huge plus for me

Also, damn Danny, hurry up with that price tag!

If you mean the exterior body, I heard that the material he is using for this line is not as susceptible to color transfer like vinyl. Meaning, it's not going to stain as easily since the plastic is of a harder material

Of course, considering that even resin can get clothing stains, I would still say it's best to be a bit more careful, but at least it sounds like they won't get smudges even from a simple clothing graze, me thinks.

This is good, I mean I would be very careful anyway but I'd be much more inclined to experiment a little with darker fabric if the plastic won't stain as soon as I touch it.

Come to think of it, I wonder if the methods currently used to de-stain vinyl dolls will be equally successful with this new material or if we'll have to find a different solution

I'm not sure of this because I haven't seen the new material, but if it's a hard-type plastic (which it sounds like), I know at least the Twin-Pines Remove-Zit,which is the very best thing for removing stains from vinyl dolls is not likely safe to use. At least on vintage hard plastic dolls, it can cause the plastic to soften and deform or blister. Not sure how oxy-ten does on hard plastic but I imagine it would be similar. I would also be very cautious of things like acetone on the harder plastic.

But things like Mr. Clean magic eraser might be okay, since all that does is basically sand a very fine layer off.

Maybe when Danny releases the new dolls, he will also post a "how to care for" page or video.

Yeah, I was thinking exactly the same things. We'll see if Danny will update his care tips or if we'll have to figure some chemistry out

I also would like to know if the whole current line up will be available as Cortex or if he'll start with the "classic" models like Mirai and Chitose only.

Afaik female SmD are currently using only 4-5 headmolds (for example Mirai has the same mold as Kizuna and Futaba) so I'd say the whole line is possible.

Considering the stencils are already done, there shouldn't be a problem with faceups.
