baldylox Posted June 16, 2017 Sorry for the long delay on these but I had some time today to update! After we ate supper at the fantastic yakiniku place we headed out for a night excursion into Shibuya. Sure, we'd already been there but not when it was super busy. I knew it would be crowded at night so we headed out. 194 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr 195 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr Somehow we got onto a themed train full of "Girls Und Panzer" posters and ads. 196 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr 197 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr 198 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr Even the outsides of the train were covered in cute girls! Now, see that guy on the far left? That's a train otaku! How do I know? because every stop we made, he got out and was taking photos of the different stuff on the outside of the train. He also had 2 buddies with him doing the same thing. They were all over the insides of the train taking pics of EVERY SINGLE flyer, poster or picture of the girls. It was funny but also neat to see train nerds in the wild. 199 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr You think you have issues finding your way around? Try this on for size... 200 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr Becca and I in the middle of Shibuya Crossing. baldylox Posted June 17, 2017 The size of those intersections and the amount of pedestrians is just wild! That's actually just one intersection... Shibuya Crossing. And it's THE largest/busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. More people cross that intersection per day than live in some smaller US cities! It's a literal sea of humanity out there when it's busy. That's why we went back when it *was* busy so we could all see how crazy it really is. aquaria13 Posted June 17, 2017 Jeez, I was marvelling at the fact that even at night there are soooo many people as I looked at the pictures. Someone else clearly had the same thought! Still that's crazy! It really shows just how many people are in Japan!
Monty Posted June 17, 2017 And here is exhibit A of why, despite how many times I visit Tokyo in a typical year, I have been to Shibuya exactly once (and only recently), and barely stayed half an hour. It's kind of like 'ok so this is what it's like, cool, now can I get out of here immediately?!' Out of interest, do you think there's anything particularly worth seeing in Shibuya? I typically avoid it because it's too noisy and trendy for nerdy dudes like me but every now and then people say the mandarake is decent. *twitter*instagram*art*
baldylox Posted June 17, 2017 Jeez, I was marvelling at the fact that even at night there are soooo many people as I looked at the pictures. Someone else clearly had the same thought! Still that's crazy! It really shows just how many people are in Japan! I think it was Friday night so this is similar to Times Square in New York.... Tokyo is an enormous city and there will always be areas that are busy at all times of the day/night. It was probably around 9pm when we took these pics. And here is exhibit A of why, despite how many times I visit Tokyo in a typical year, I have been to Shibuya exactly once (and only recently), and barely stayed half an hour. It's kind of like 'ok so this is what it's like, cool, now can I get out of here immediately?!' Ha ha ha! That's exactly what I did the first trip I made to Japan because I was only interested in seeing the Hachiko statue, the crossing itself and all the crazy advertisements and people. I stayed for about 30 minutes during my daytime trip and then I went back at night and stayed for about an hour. It's definitely NOT for people who don't like crowds. Out of interest, do you think there's anything particularly worth seeing in Shibuya? I typically avoid it because it's too noisy and trendy for nerdy dudes like me but every now and then people say the mandarake is decent. Well, we only wandered around for about 2 hours so we didn't see a ton of what's actually there. And like you, none of us are trendy or care for shopping in places like 109 or Forever 21 so we found other things. When we went in the daytime, we hit up the Konokuniya Bookstore, the Disney Store and Loft. All those places were neat and interesting. We also had THE BEST meal there, way underneath the street in a tiny spot that sat like 16 people max. Go check out my other post to see what I mean. We didn't know there was a Mandarake there or else we'd have gone to that too. There weren't any nerdy type stores that we saw, it was basically mainstream shopping and eating. So I can see why you didn't hang out there for long. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
