Classic Glam: Miku's New Look

Recommended Posts

So, for quite some time now, I've been feeling kind of. . . underwhelmed with my Miku's default faceup. It's not that it was bad, and I certainly don't mind it on other people's dolls, but it seemed too plain and serene for the absolute diva I always felt my Miku to be.

I finally got off my rear end and wiped her default a few days ago, finding this underneath:

Thought I'd share these blank shots, because they're informative. For instance, I'd figured for a while that Miku's kitten mouth was mostly paint, but evidently not. I was also surprised to find that kind of pointy crease at the outer corners of the eyes. I actually like that feature, and decided to use it as a guide.

I also spent a bunch of time looking at 1930's-style makeup tutorials, because I had this feeling Miku would totally rock that Golden Age of Hollywood glamour.

I spread the faceup work over a couple days, so I could get some emotional distance in between layers and double check what I was doing. And eventually, I wound up with this:

Yeah, there's the egotistical sass I always knew was in there!

Plus, now that she no longer has turquoise eyebrows, it's much easier for her to wear other wig colors, like this flirty Dollheart bob.

I had been nervous about giving her a new faceup for literally around two years, but now that it's done, I'm so, SO glad I took the plunge and went for it. It feels so right, and is a nice change from my other girls to boot.

For anyone wondering: I used watercolor pencils for the eyebrows (to emulate the 30's pencil-brow fad), the eyelid crease, the finer eyelashes, and my initial sketch on the head. There's some Pan Pastel for the blush and lips, and then I used Pearl-Ex powders for the eyeshadows and a little bit of an accent on the lips. MSC is my preferred sealant, but I did add a bit of acrylic gloss to her lips and her eyelids.

Whoa.... that is one drastic change for her!

BUT....

She looks amazing now! This style of faceup is something you just don't see on a DD and somehow it totally works for her. She's almost got a Gretta Garbo or Bette Davis look to her in my opinion and that's pretty cool.

Congrats on being brave enuff to wipe her default face up and for doing such a good job on her unique new one!

I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.

Thanks so much! That's exactly the kind of thing I was going for. I figured that style would really ring true for "glamour", and unlike the more 50's looks, doesn't rely so much on lips to carry it. (I love Miku's mouth, but gawd it's teeny. You'd need like, Rise, Alna, or the 04 for a 50's look probably.) I knew I was kind of taking a risk with this, but I'm basically relieved it worked.

I love this style but part of me feels like it needs a fake mole put somewhere to complete the look.

I love Miku's default look and would never ever consider changing mine. But WOW! You totally nailed the look you were going for, and it's absolutely fabulous! I can't wait to see her in person. Now you need to get some matching era outfits for her.

You know, I actually toyed with that idea, but couldn't decide on where to put it.

Thanks so much! And yeah, you'd know the personality, given that one time we let her harass Hrist. Seriously, though, thanks.

Yeah, Miku's default is good, it just wasn't right for me. I do get you on the "never would change default on mine" though: it's how I feel about Nanoha and Homura. (Fate I sometimes toy with altering just her lips, but haven't committed to anything.) I'm probably going to bring her to the next meet, so we should totally get side-by-side of our two Mikus together. For science!

As for outfits, I have an idea for a 30's-inspired-but-not-historically-accurate gown for her. That's going to wait though, because I've got another project I want to do for her first.

The question is what kind of outfit should I dress her in? I know we're planning a summer theme, so swimsuit or summer girl? You know, change as little as possible between the two to get the best comparison, for science.

Eh, we can strip them for that. =P I can bring her default wig, but as far as summer outfits go, I. . . might be making her a mermaid tail? Depends on if I can get it presentable on time. But I kind of doubt that you'll have a lime green metallic lycra outfit on had. XD

Not the exact same outfits, just similar types, as Miku won't strip (She's just not that kind of girl.). But yes, I am lacking in the lime green metallic lycra department. So I guess it'll really depend on the details of the meet.

Thanks so much! Yeah, there's a lot of awesome vintage styles, and it's rare for a DD to rock one of those looks. I'm so glad it actually worked. XD
