One Piece Nami Smart Doll

She is lovely, but don’t know if I’m sold on her face up.

Wonder what she would look like with less orange/red colour around her eyes?

She's got a really distinctive face! I don't really like OP enough to want her as a character doll, but I do really want to customize her...

I really live how she looks and I'm seriously thinking of getting her as my first SmartDoll. I live how she looks so much like Nami. Not cutesy. Not ultra girly but just Nami. Like I said if Danny ever makes FairyTail I am for sure getting Erza, Lucy, Wendy and Juvia. Plus Natsu, Grey and Jelal. Maybe I would have won the lottery then so money wouldn't be a problem by then. Lol!

This is interesting,

As for this, the wording is kind of weird to me:

"NAMI's wig, bikini top and jeans cannot be removed by default (a request from the license holder)."

? Is he saying that there's no option to buy her without those things (which wasn't an option with any of the other licensed dolls so I dont know why he would bring it up for Nami in particular if so), or is he saying you literally can't remove them?

Because if the latter, what the hell, Bandai. I'm surprised and yet...not. Bandai gonna Bandai but don't they know literally the entire point of fashion dolls is to dress them up...? I can understand wanting to keep their licensed products as the characters themselves and thus making the wig non-removable, but not being able to remove the bikini and jeans (if that's what he actually means by that) is just nuts. Would they be like...glued on or something? Or just ridiculously tight?

 

I guess we'll have to ask him to clarify what that means.

 

EDIT: I thought maybe it meant that he has no plans to sell those items separately like he did with the Girls und Panzer uniform.

I wonder if that means Nami wll be shipped fully clothed and with all her gear on opposed to the Smartdoll inna bag with bagged accessories style. That would mean return of the long slim boxes. Maybe she'll have her own desing for the box?

Sounds like the "Nami Special Bust" is like the one Volks did for Yoko Littner way back in the day. She was the first to have no nips and a totally different bust shape than any other DDdy at the time and it was due to the license holder that she was done like that. So this move doesn't surprise me at all.

 

What DOES surprise me is the possibility that Nami's clothing can't be removed. Is Bandai treating her as an action figure instead of a fashion doll? That could make sense in a way but sheesh, one of the BIGGEST reasons for Smartdolls is to change their clothing out! Why miss out on the opportunity to give Danny the ability to make more of her anime/manga clothing and outfits to make MORE MONEY?!?!?

 

Here again, a Japanese company makes no sense whatsoever and Western fans are left going WTF. Hopefully Danny will explain this in more detail soon because if he doesn't and people order her thinking they're going to swap out her clothes and then can't...... he's going to get a lot of backlash for it.

I would hazard a guess that this all means "no substitutions or deletions", or Nami has to be sold with this special bust only and she must be sold as the complete full set, no "doll only" option, but the clothes are standard clothing (removable) as is the bust.

The Japanese literally says the clothes can't be removed. I guess if you really wanted to dress Nami up you could stick her head on another body. Since she only has a bikini top you could theoretically put different tops over it.

 

I also just want to say...this isn't a 'weird Japan thing' it's a weird Bandai thing. They've annoyed people with their weird restrictions for probably as long as they've been around (stuff like not letting or being extremely reluctant to let other companies release merch of their properties, ask any Sailor Moon fan), but for heavens sake can someone sit them down and explain what a fashion doll IS?!

 

It does seem like they want her to just be a giant action figure. And yet they actually call her a fasshondoru on their page, despite missing the entire purpose of them.

 

I really think Danny needs to explain this clearer because his wording is vague, and I can only understand it by checking what Bandai themself say. There are also people who don't read the fine print on the site so I imagine there's going to be a lot of people disappointed by this and have probably already preordered without even knowing.

 

Unless 'can't remove clothes' is actually Bandai telling you 'don't remove clothes' like it's a rule, that one can break if they want to.

Where do you see the info of her clothes non-removable clothes?

 

I'm looking at the English product page of Nami on the Smartdoll website but I don't see that mentioned anywhere.

...Huh, you're right. He's removed it. I was just about to post that the info was missing in the japanese language version of the smartdoll site but its now off the english page too.

It was definitely there though, and was what I copy-pasted. The sentence was right after where it tells you what comes in the set.

 

I hope this means this decision was changed, but it's still on the Bandai item page in Japanese (Bandai are also taking preorders on their own site)

Edit: Decided to just ask the man himself to get to the bottom of it, let's see what he says. I've never seen anything so weird before but I've also never seen Bandai involved with 1/3 fashion dolls.

EDIT 2: Danny says that what he means in his wording is that Nami is shipped fully clothed - as opposed to naked. I imagine this is so she is recognizable as Nami when you see the box. (like how Azone pure neemos are I guess).(or maybe they dont want you to see her naked first?)

But I still dont understand Bandai's choice of words at all, Danny said it might mean they have to fix her wig in a way that it doesnt slip off during shipping.

 

I hope we got nothing to worry about then, but the sad thing is how believable the scenario is when Bandai is concerned.

All clothes are removable if you have scissors

Nami is now available for pre-order! Not much warning before it started I can't afford her now.

 

 

I made the decision a few weeks ago that i wasnt gonna get nami after all but totally agree there was no lead up which was a bit dissapointing, no chance for a last minute mind change.... :/

 

Also reading all the clothing issues isnt really suprising..... on the sailormoon note i tried to pre order the pink moon star locket ages ago through cd japan and they ended up canceling my order cause Bandai ..... =___=

Danny stated on Twitter that what the wording actually meant was that all Nami Dolls will be shipped with their clothes and wigs on/attached. This is due to the license agreement on Bandai's end.... they want their girl to "be" Nami as soon as the purchaser opens the box. So instead of her shipping like all other Smartdolls do, with wigs and clothing NOT already on the doll, she will be fully clothed and have her wig on and ready to go as soon as you open her up.

 

Danny said this was NOT what he wanted or suggested but Bandai said this is how it's going to be so that's that. So their wording was just a bit off is all.

 

I'm glad to hear that the clothing and wig will be removable tho, that will certainly curtail the backlash that would have certainly occurred had they NOT have been removable.

I've just put her on pre-order and I'm so excited.

She will be my first Smart Doll and my first vinyl in general.

She's up for order on big in Japan for a bit of a silly price... No idea who would order her there when she's cheaper on culture Japan by quite a bit.

 

Not personally interested in this doll but hope she turns out ok for people who are.

Since this is coming with a telescopic stand, I'm assuming it has the hole in her back. Do all smart dolls have that hole in their back?

I ordered her on Nov 10, shipping notice on Feb 23, postal worker didn't knock and left a ransom note on my door yesterday--- and I picked her up from the post office today ^^

I made a box opening post on my Instagram, but it seems like it's not showing up under any of the tags I used;;

 

Because jeans have a tendency to stain-- she comes shipped with brown leggings underneath her jeans.

 

Comparing her to the product photos:

- her bikini is a darker aqua

- sandals are different; they look way nicer now

- she comes with high heel feet, looks like they were using flat feet in the promo pics

 

I'm in love with how nice her wig is and how nice she looks~ I haven't changed her out of her default yet-- I might tomorrow though
