DDh-06!/KoolGalBlue Faceup progress!

For the 8 I was gonna say that the thickness of the upper eyeline (? If that’s what you call it - the thickest black part directly above the eye) was too uniform and should maybe taper a little the closer it gets to the inner corner of the eye (the part closest to her nose). But I noticed that you did a better job at that on the Akira. I agree that this one is your best one - and it’s cool to see the progress when comparing it to earlier versions.

If you want further critique: the eye crease lines could still be a little thinner, and maybe the eyebrows need a second colour in there (a few lines of slightly darker purple?) however I am not a faceup artist and eyebrows are difficult regardless.

It really helps seeing the heads with eyes though - i like how the eye colour matches the Akira’s eyebrows - but I still wanna see her with a wig and body.

Annnnddd, here's my second one for today!! It's my new 09 head!

 

Honestly, she's my favorite basic head, but, I'm slowly learning to love the 08. I was planning on selling the 08 when I got her, but....I love her too much

I did that stupid thing again where I thought I replied and then didn't.

 

For these two in particular, I personally think the colour contrast between the eye-lines and the eyebrows is too great, so it looks a bit off. It's difficult for me to tell, but are the eye lines painted and the eyebrows done with pencil? It lacks harmony a bit - I think you would need to either make the eye paint a lighter colour (dark grey or brown) or do them in pencil ... or do the eyes in paint, to get that harmony back.

That said, I really like the eye lines on the second one with pink eyebrows. They look very crisp and symmetrical! If I cover the eyebrows, it looks better still.

 

However again this is just my thoughts seeing them without eyes and wigs. Its possible the addition of a wig would tie things together. This seems more likely on the pink one.

 

The only other thing I can say is that I dont think the eyelid crease needs to extend that far out, ideally it should be slightly less than the 'length' of the eye or even half of it - this seems to be true for both anime style faceups and the more realistic ones on resins.

Everything in my faceups are done with watercolor pencil and pastels, so no paint here! I use more layers on the eyelashes as I love opaque and strong lash lines, I'll be trying to get a dark brown pencil, so maybe that'll work better?

 

I'll be trying to fix up the eye creases! They're just so difficult for me to find the right balance sometimes

 

Currently, I only have one girl body, and maybe three wigs, but I'll try to get those pictures for you guys next time!

I really like this one. The lines look delicate and the soft browns compliment her eye colour really well. I also really like her expression, she looks very sweet and endearing, but a little bit hesitant. And the eyelid crease thing I mentioned you did really well!

One of the eye brows is a little bit higher than the other, but thats something I only really noticed when I really scrutinized it for things to 'criticize'. Someone who is better at faceups might be able to help more.

 

The only thing that jumps out to me is not so much related to the faceup itself, but that I think this kind of gentle soft browns of the lines you used is much more suited to a pale wig (like a creamy blond) than a dark one - it looks a bit mismatched with the darker wig and the lighter colour would compliment it better. This is something I discovered with the DDH01 i bought on yahoo auctions - I nearly sold him because he didnt look right with the darker coloured wigs he was originally going to have, and thought I just didnt like the head until I tried a blond one on (its also a faceup that uses soft brown lines) Do you have a lighter colour (especially a blond) to try?

And for the wig....I only really have the one as of right now

I have a blonde wig that I've made myself, but it's not that great

The 06 looks very much better than the previous ones! I actually quite like it.

On a side note... What do you use to seal the faceups? MSC? I heard that it is bad lately, but yours look pretty nice and smooth.

I actually use Testors Dullcote for most of my faceups

 

It's kinda a trickier sealant. But the best trick I've found is to wait a full day after sealing before doing any pencil work.

Not a criticism, I just wanted to say I'm loving her goth look! You did a great job on the gradients on the edges of the eyelashes!

Thank you so much! I've always loved darker colors, and I've especially always loved the goth fashion styles.I was also trying something really new with the lashes, and I think I'm gonna incorporate it into my style now!

Good work on the eyebrows! I really like the purple theme and it goes great with her eyes. I'd also like to see her in a purple wig (to match the brows), and then she'll be very purple indeed.

Thank both of you so much! Her wig is actually a very, very dark purple, but my camera cant pick it up I do have a lighter purple wig that I've made myself, so I can get some pics of her in that if you want

 

But, I do plan on keeping her like this for a while, as I feel that it matches my characters calmer, but sweet personality.

Hey! Guess who's back from the dead!!! Sorry I haven't been posting. I just haven't had any time to do any faceups recently...This one is actually about a month old I've just started my college courses, and I had a con to go to...all on top of maybe moving soon T.T but enough of that! On to the pictures! This faceup is on the ddh-08 that I got a few months back, and I'm honestly still a little iffy on the sculpt as a whole. She might be the head I decide to open my custom head shop with! Who knows

Hey, you seem to have made a lot of progress!! I'm extremely new to this forum, and only really have experience with simple Monster High and Barbie faceups, so obviously take everything I say with a big ol wheelbarrow of salt, though.

 

That said, I really love your sharp, chunky eyelashes and gradient eyebrows! You do seem to struggle with keeping eyebrows even though, which is fair - it's hard! However, have you ever considered investing in a pair of calipers? They don't have to be anything super fancy, just something to accurately check distances with. That way, when blocking in your brows, you can accurately measure the distance between things like the eyelid and upper lashes. I know sometimes my eyes can trick me into thinking something is even, but then I take the time to measure, and...Whoops, I'm off my a few millimeters! Obviously human faces aren't perfectly symmetrical, but generally the differences aren't super clear at first glance, yeah?

 

Regardless, I really really adore what you did with your Akira head! The coloured brows and lashes work extremely well with the intended wig and eyes. If you ever plan on taking commissions or selling heads on Etsy, please let me know!

So! I'm back with a new faceup!!! I know, I've been doing a lot of updates today, but, I'm in a real customizing mood right now. On to the faceup!

 

I started this faceup at about noon yesterday, and completed it today at about eleven in the morning! I really took my time and wanted really saturated colors for this! I love making the gradients in the face, and those take quite a few layers to build up

 

 

And here she is in my Akira's wig!

 

 

I'm honestly incredibly proud of this faceup. I worked extremely hard on it, and I feel that it's one of my cleanest and sharpest yet!

I agree, I like this one a lot too, it's my new favourite one. The gradient is really striking - especially the pink parts - I think it'd look especially good with a wig that has pink highlights/hair extensions), but that's just me. I think it would also look good with purple/fuschia/red eyes. But yes, it definitely shows that you worked hard on it and you should definitely be proud!

 

The DDh08 (only saw it now) is a little harder for me to really judge because, admittedly, I'm not really a fan of the sculpt to begin with, and it seems particularly challenging. It's easier for me to judge the work if I cover the mouth. (This isn't a knock against your work because I think even the D'Coords from Volks with DDH08 look kinda weird with that mouth). I do think the eye lines are a bit too uniformly thick and 'busy' for my liking though.
