Is the 65cm male Obitsu body worth getting?

Recommended Posts

Many of the threads I could find online are 5+ years old, and many of them include dead links/broken jpegs. I've only come across a few stories talking about the fragility of the body overall, but I want to see if there's anyone out there who still has one and likes them.

Mehhhh... it's all right. It poses fine and looks okay. Personally, I dislike the small hands and feet, and mods have to be done to the neck to make it work with a DD head. Even then, I don't think it's ideal for DD heads. And its posture is a little stiff. I bought one secondhand in 2012 because I thought he was the only game in town and the opportunity came up, but I don't know if I would buy one again. I've never had fragility problems with mine, but I don't handle him that much. I still haven't finished his neck mod to my satisfaction.

I would say if you see one for a good price, he's worth it. Plus it's nice to have boys of different heights and builds.

Right now I am liking the look of the Smartdoll boy body instead. The Dollfie Dream boys are a little too slight in the torso, in my opinion, but at least they are made for DD heads!

I bought one to use for a hybrid project because one popped up for a really good price on Y!J, but after seeing just how much work would go into maintaining it -- not to mention the lack of replacement parts -- I decided to just give the whole doll to my boyfriend and come back to the project some other time. Which will probably be later than intended now that I have an MDD project on my hands. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have had 3, 65cms. One from the original batch and two from subsequent batches. One of the two I still have is a Visuadoll Takeshi V2. Takeshi V1 was on the 55cm body.

The skeletal design is basically the same as that of their 60cm ball joint body, although scaled up in length, not girth. The first batch bodies had a new (weird) upper arm skeleton design, which I think accounted for a lot of the early reports of frailty and breakage. In subsequent batches Obitsu changed the design back to the more conventional "60cm" design, even using the 60cm elbow joint. Teething problems like this have been common for new Obitsu designs, which is why their first release batches are usually small. No amount of in-house testing can account for the myriad of real world situations encountered. With the arm issue dealt with the 65cm went on to several larger general releases.

I was a little disappointed the 65cm used the older 60cm style joints rather than their newer 50cm style joints. The 50cm skeleton works much better than the 55/60cm skeleton and has a better range of motion. It's my assumption they were more interested in getting the "larger than 60cm boy" that everybody was clambering for out in the market, rather than spend a lot of R&D money on a whole new skeleton, which wouldn't see much in the way of sales. The demand for a "large boy" was there, but in nowhere near the quantities of the 50cm and 60cm female bodies. Hence the 65cm languished.

Overall, if you get a 65cm you get a very serviceable "enlarged" 60cm body. My only real beefs with the 65cm are I think the neck is too long (easily remedied) and the hand sculpt isn't very versatile. I would have preferred an open finger, relaxed hand to the closed finger one use as stock. The 65cm is only available in Obitsu white skin.

There isn't a wide variety of male vinyls out there, especially dedicated designs, not those adapted by swapping in a couple of "male" vinyl parts. Currently your choices are (from small/youngest to large/oldest):

Parabox 4Xcm males (adapted from the 4Xcm female bodies)

Parabox 55cm males (adapted from the 60cm female bodies)

The new Volks boys (I have not seen one in person so I can't say much about them, presumably they are different vinyl skins over existing DDX skeletons and they appear to be "slim")

Parabox 60cm males (again adapted from the 60cm female)

The Smart Doll male (an anime teen in sculpt and proportions)

The Obitsu 65cm male (a mature male sculpt)

The new Granado Udell male vinyl body (an over the top "super hero" sculpt)

Visuadoll Takeshi on the left, stock 65cm head on the right, both with the "neckectomy".

Maybe it is because I am still new to vinyls, but I do have a 65 cm Obitsu, and besides the awkward hands, I have no issues with the body --With the exception of the one elbow joint coming apart once in a while.

Besides, with the magnets in the feet, I can do cool things like this:

By the way, this seller on Yahoo Japan Auctions has the best prices I've seen on new Obitsu base bodies, especially if you can get it at the opening bid. I have purchased several from them over the years.

He's adorable! I have a soft spot for blue hair. May I ask what head he has? It looks so good on that body! Any neck modding? Now I'm getting all temtped to go for one eventually since the cost isn't super high...

Oh wow, this thread got more responses then I anticipated, thank you all for the feedback!

Jeez, that's an awesome price on jauce. Currently I'm focusing getting a body for my ddh04 head, and they even have a good price on the 50 cm girl body. Does anyone know an estimate for how much the shipping might cost to have it shipped to the US from jauce?

JAC ships EMS, which for doll sized parcels runs about $48-$50 (Japan to Chicago). Delivery for me takes about 3 days.

I had one, and ended up giving it to a friend. The stock head isn't great-looking, and the body is awkward. I've had big Obitsus (and still think the Obitsu 50cm is the best vinyl body, period) for over ten years and never had a problem with breakage, yet my 65 male broke his shoulder almost immediately. I ended up donating him to a friend.

I now have a 60 cm Smart Doll male and really like him a lot.

To be honest, before I bought my obitsu 65 I was terrified.

I have heard so many rumours of them breaking in transit I irreparable places. Even for the lucky few to get one in good condition I've heard that they were very fragile and break easily at the simplest of posing.

But I decided purchase mine and leave it up to fate.

When I got my obitsu, he arrived very well packaged and bubble wrapped. There wasn't a single loose or broken part on him wich was such a relief.

After modding the neck to be shorter and replacing the elbows I've actually found the body to be quite a delight.

The sculpting of the doll is georgeous and the joints are very strong and rigid. I haven't had a problem with looseness at all.

If anything I feel like he's too tight, which I'm hoping will loosen up slightly over time.

I do want to in the future get mine extra large dollfie dream hands as I feel like his tiny hands are the only asthetic flaw .

I 1000% feel lIke the obitsu 65 is worth getting, and I actually have plans in the future to buy another one.
