Questions About Face-ups

Recommended Posts

Hi! I’m a newbie to the Dollfie world, and am soon going to be ordering my first girl— a DDH-01 with an MDD base. I’m planning on painting the face myself, and have a few questions about the process. I’ve been soaking up information about face-ups like crazy recently, but I’m still curious about some things.

I want to know how people create that gradient effect from black/dark brown in the middle of the eye, to a lighter brown near the ends and the eyelashes. Is it a base layer of lighter paint? Or watercolour pencil/pastel under underneath some black or dark brown acrylic paint? Or something else?

On top of that, I’d really appreciate some pointers on how to give the eyes a factory-painted, polished look. Should I do the eye sketch with pastel or watercolour pencils? Which turns out better?

Aside from that, any general tips would be welcome. As you can tell, I’m mostly concerned about the eyes lol.

Thanks!

First off, I'm going to tell you that I'm nowhere near professional level, but I'd like to give you some tips that I've learned from my four years of faceup practice!

First off, The gradient is usually a different layer, idk how other people do it, but I generally just layer a really light color over the dark one, but make sure that the dark one doesn't completely cover the lighter one.

To get the "factory clean" look it's most common to use thinned acrylics as they have a less grainy appearance. You can use watercolor pencils, but you'll need a ton of layers (personal tests). And generally sketches are done with watercolor pencils for eyes, and pastels or pencils for eyebrows.

I hope this helped at all!

Thanks for the reply! So for the eyes— watercolour pencils, black/dark brown acrylic paint, then lighter coloured paint?

If you're going with acrylics, then the color at the ends of the gradient would be first, so if you wanted lighter tips for the eyelashes, then it'd be the lighter color first!

Post pics when you're done! I can't wait to see!

Sorry if I am bumping this thread but I don't want to start a new one as it has been discussed. I know that some people use water color pencils but are there certian brands? I am probably going to do this for a 27cm one and I just find the paint brushes not to pointy enough for me and hard.

Are there also a brand of MSC to get for it?

I can't answer your other questions, but can this. MSC is the brand, it is short for Mr. Super Clear from the brand known as Mr. Hobby: http://www.mr-hobby.com/en/itemList.php?cId=11

I've also read of some faceup artists using types of airbrush media (Liquitex? not sure) but I don't have any answers there.

Any sealing should definitely be done after the paint has dried.
