DD Sailor Moon!

BRG did some photoshopping on how they'd like a RetroMoon:

 

That photoshop looks a lot closer to how she should look to me.

 

I'm still trying to figure out what it is about Volks photos. Especially because I've noticed that the SDs rarely have this problem. It's true that they still look better in person, but they tend to look more like the official photos in my experience. At least compared to DDs.

 

The angle from which you photo eyes on people can make them appear larger or smaller, but I don't know if that applies to dolls too. I'm not trained in portraiture, but I do remember reading that if you photograph a person from slightly above their line of sight and have them look into the camera it makes their eyes look bigger.

That photoshopped version looks more like Usagi Sailor Moon! I also feel that the eyes on the DD should be bigger, more like Usagi's wide-eyed look. The current eye size seem more suited to Neo Queen Serenity because they seem more mature.

I'm not a Smartdoll fan, but somehow I have the feeling Danny would have made a better Sailor Moon. His Body Type fits her better (just my opinion though~)

The irony is that even smartdoll legs aren't crazy long enough for the insane lengths they get to in some of the manga panels I remember some of the scenes where the girls are drawn from a distance/far away and they're like...80% leg.

I think she looks great but if they gave literally the same face as the anime it probably wouldn't look so good as a doll. They could've made the eyes a little bigger but maybe not as big as the edit linked above. Looks a bit too weird to me.

 

And not crazy about Danny Choo's colabs so far so seriously doubt this would suddenly be any better.

I'm with the crowd on this one- the small eyes lept out to me at first sight. Not only it's small for this character, but there are other recent DD with bigger eyes so it's certainly possible! And that wig looks like a mess in the official photos, I can only imagine how it'll look on arrival. She's cute of course, but this set doesn't seem as polished as other collab models. Folks have been clamoring for SM BJD for years, maybe the underwhelming response will prompt some improvements from Volks.

 

Though I might get her Super set and try it on a girl like Yaya whose features seem closer to the original character designs. Crystal is pretty and all, but I grew up on the janky DiC dubs

It does look like it's got a ton of product in it for the photo. Usagi's hairstyle defies physics in a lot of ways.

Like everyone is saying, the eyes are a little small, but I still don't really like the look of the photoshopped one either, looks a little like the head belongs on an MDD. I think that djvanisher's custom Uzuki really hit the mark a lot better than Volks, but I guess it'll be easier to tell once more pics surface.

I look at it this way, when I take her instead of Miku places, when people stop me and tell me that's a neat Sailor Moon doll, they'll actually be correct (Yes, I've been stopped when I have Miku in her default outfit and told that's a neat Sailor Moon doll I have.).

Ha ha! This happened to me at my first Doll Convention when I had my Smartdoll Mirai in her school uniform. Almost everyone who made mention of her thought she was from Sailor Moon due to the coloring and style of the outfit.

Was on the train with a lil Azone Azynyan doll (yes, K-on!), and this one woman asking if it was SailorMoon, which then somehow smoothly segued into her gushing watching that show when she was in grade school etc etc (not gonna lie, it was kinda funny watching a woman with children become a teen fangirl)

DD Sister makes a lot of sense. I am guessing she is an SS or S Bust too. SS would be best for Usagi I think.

Sister is weird to me, it means she'll be shorter than Miku, which is...weird. Plus I'm thinking of the super long legs in the manga (I dont know if they're much shorter in Crystal, I actually couldn't stand Crystal so barely watched it)

 

One way this could make sense is if Usagi is shorter than any of the other characters they plan to make...like Jupiter (wishful thinking maybe but honestly, I'm a little surprised she's Sister and not just DDIII).

 

but uh...I have to disagree with thinking SS bust is perfect. She's...pretty well-developed for a 14 year old, everyone in that show is, the sailor ribbons do cover it a bit though. I'd think M bust, they could get away with S, but SS is virtually flat.

Yes, an SS bust would be not right, not sure an S bust is enough, but then an M does seem a bit much. But I don't have any S busts to really look at, just SS and M. As for long legs, being on a DDS body makes sense. You can swap the DDS legs for DDIII legs if you really want and get a doll that more closely follows the artwork.

 

So, she's released on a Sunday? Is that at an event? And when does she go for sale online so I can try my hand at getting her and her outfit? That's the important info, how can this American stuck in the USA get his hands on this Japanese doll that's in Japan!

The event is Dolpa. The details her lottery will be announced in Volks News tomorrow, but we do know it's after Dolpa (December 17th).

I imagine it'll be a similar time frame to what Santa Alter had last year. (which was unfortunate for a Santa-themed doll, as everyone got them after christmas lol) The difference would be that if they're doing the old lottery format where people who go to Dolpa can have the chance to get one on the day, then we get owner photos before the online lottery opens. Which is really handy.

She is nice, but I think DjVanisher's custom and bunnycream96's customs (sorry, lost the link to their website) are much nicer, so easy pass for me, despite the deep nostalgic attack. That Super set looks really tempting though; good thing I'm completely broke.

 

If they do a Venus, I may end up singing a different tune. >.>

They may be drawn large for their age, but fitting them to the DDS frame is more about proper proportions for the doll body to me.

 

Just reviewing the transformations Usagi looks like she is between SS & S for a DDS. If she was DDP then M might make sense, but not DDS. I would agree on a DDS S makes more sense than SS. SS on DDS really is flat, on a DD it's a bit more defined.

 

Ami & Rei are S, and Minako is between S & M but closer to S imo. Makoto is definitely an M, she should be DD not DDS, and is the only Inner Senshi that really fits M I think. You can base Ami's size really well by the episode where she earns Aqua Rhapsody. She has that whole other reality sequence where she is naked.

Just looking over all the screencaps out there you do see some of the variation in design typical of anime TV shows, but overall I think they are drawn smaller not larger most of the time.

Sailor Moon doesn't really do anything for me as far as nostalgia or anything.... I never watched anything past whatever was shown on CN ages ago. So when I saw this announcement and photos, the first thing in my head was " Oh look, an 06 head cosplaying as Sailor Moon." And I see others think the same. So yeah, she's a no go for me. Her outfits are nice tho but I won't be buying any of them.

 

I'm on the same boat here. Is it weird that I was more of a DBZ kind of person, people did find it odd for a girl to enjoy DBZ instead of Sailor Moon back in the day.

 

But yeah... the head sculpt doesn't really look like Sailor Moon to me. As someone mentioned, DJVanisher's custom Sailor Moon is 10x nicer and true to the character than the official Volks one.

I think she looks cute, but honestly I've seen custom dolls that look more like Sailor Moon than her. The eyes don't really look like anything I've seen in the anime, although I love her outfit and wig. I'll probably give this one a miss though.

From the scans that have been posted so far her outfit is listed as fitting DD/DDS SS/S, but I couldn't tell which she herself is. You can also see her moon healing staff on the edge of one of the pages.

 

Edit: Actually I think I see an M in her description now but that doesn't make sense if the outfit is SS/S.

 

Edit 2: I see now, the outfit is SS/S/M, but the M was really hard see because of glare on the page.

I believe I see she's an M. It's a little weird that her outfit can fit even SS if she's M, but who knows what they mean by this (maybe that it'll be only slightly loose...?)
