Smart Doll Cherry

I haven't been able to justify buying any of Danny's clothing because of those prices. I do understand it's likely because he has most all the stuff made in Japan, and also tests everything so that it isn't likely to stain, and it may be worth it for that aspect alone but the prices are just hard to swallow.

For example I love that new red flaire sweater dress and being a stretchy thing I'm sure it would fit my DD well, but at 6500 yen it is just a lot.

The more I think about it.. the more I think I should order just the doll. :T I think I'll cancel and do just that.

My Cherry came in the mail! I’ll post some owner pics when I get home from work.

-Also my customs on the package was quite cheap, considering the price of the doll. Does Culture Japan declare a lesser value?

Congratulations on your Cherry~

If I remember correctly, Danny Choo often times marks down the packages price automatically, I don't know by how much but I do know that mine was incredibly low.

Ooops, I bought her. And a cute outfit to boot. T.T Danny scared me with his seasonal bs. Can't let her get away from me.

Good thing I got a job recently. xd

That’s what I’m fearful of as well! Ugh. I’m working on hopefully selling my Len soon so that I can use the funds to buy her, and maybe an outfit from Volks for her.

I hope you can do it. Smartdoll clothes are so expensive, I don't think I'll ever buy from them again, I just want the whole experience with buying my first smartdoll. Like the price of entire volks outfit for a sweater. Financially sweaty.

‘Financially sweaty’ ... never have I heard a better description of what this hobby feels like sometimes hahahaha.

Danny wrote on Twitter that Cherry didn’t make the cut to front line. Get this babe while you can!

I’ll post owner pics later tonight to entice y’all. ;3 cause I was supposed to like 2 weeks ago

Thank you.

I’m considering changing her wig. I can’t get it to look right, but I love her eyes.

I’ve been having a lot of trouble photographing her. I’m finding smart dolls really hard to pose, and her wig is fighting me.

When I first got her it took me 15 minutes just to wrestle it onto her head.

She’s cute as a button though.

Is something changed with the pattern for new wigs?

I week ago my friend asked me to help her with her Melody wig and it was the fight too. The wig popped up easily. My Ivory's default wig sits always as it is glued in.

I saw some one write on the forum not too long ago that Danny shrank the cap of the wigs a smidge to help them from being too lose, or falling off. I don’t know what the wigs were like before but damn these bitches snug, now.

I don't know if there is anything special to his technique, but Danny has a video about how to put on the wigs here:

Thank you, I saw it. I always like Danny's video but there were no some special tricks and advises. Video shows just the best way to put the wig on any doll.

I think that new wigs are not shrunk in cirbleepference but they are more shallow and do not reach dolls ears.

Deeper wigs often close dolls ears but they have good grip in that case.

I’ve seen the videos and tried to use the tips to put the wig on initially and it just refused.

I don’t even know how I got it on, but after 15 minutes of tremendous crying effort, she had hair.

You need to consume at least 5000 calories for the energy this task requires.

If it helps, in the resin world, owners often flip the hair's canvas wig cap inside out, align the finge on the head as desired, then pull the wig cap back over the rest of the head. I find that method years easier and faster, you will have to brush the hair out afterward, though, especially on shorter hair LOL

I always one hand to pin the front edge where I want it on the doll's forehead, and then use my other hand to pull the wig cap back over the rest of the doll's head (I usually clamp the doll's body between my thighs for additional stability). I like tight-fitting wigs (I hate using wig caps) and this method works really well for me.

Here she is. Best photo I could get of her before I went to work.

I'm sad to say, that as much as I love her... I'm just not in love with her. I don't feel that special connection that I feel with Rin and Miku. Maybe smartdolls just aren't for me. I don't know. I literally still have the box, bag, and plastic she came with. So not a good sign, subconsciously.

When I unboxed Rin, I decimated that poor box, as a commitment that Rin would always be mine.

I think I was more excited about the 'unboxing part', and Danny's a cool dude. Made me really want to like his products, and I don't. :c

I think I'm going to re-home her. I don't know how off-topic dolls are sold on here, but if anyone is looking for a Cherry, I've got one. Message me if interested. :>

-Interestingly enough: smartdolls don't squeak like they used to, they smell very different from Dollfies, and maybe I'm not using it right, or my smartdoll posing just sucks, but the stand slides around on smooth surfaces.

This is me. I want to but I just don't really like the face scuplts and some of the body proportions like the extra skinny arms and legs. I do think some of the girls like Melody are cute but overall I just like other things better.

I'm thinking about getting some of his clothes though.

While Smart Dolls aren't allowed in the marketplace section here, I've noticed someone using a link in their signature to a sale post on flickr so something like that should be ok.

Ooo, that's a good idea. I think I'll borrow that.

The clothes are VERY nice. I don't think $70/piece nice. But maybe that's just the price to pay for extreme quality, quality control, and I'm assuming well payed labour.

Maybe I can't pose her because her body proportions are out of this world. I am not smartdoll skilled.

I also, now having a better look at the sculpt... am not that thrilled. She's adorable, but she looks like a low-poly 1st year animation student's final project. I don't know if it's Cherry/Sana exclusively, but she has... sharp angles? around the bridge of her nose.

The prices are mainly why I haven't bought anything yet. But I've been buying older Volks stuff I want from Mandarake and I realized I'm basically paying Smart Doll prices for aftermarket DD clothes. I also trust that the clothes are very unlikely to stain as he tests everything and while the disclaimer is still there I think it's because there can't be a guarantee. Having recently had a staining disaster from some pantyhose that did the "ink to my hands then to the doll body, everywhere" thing I'm finding there is certainly some value to clothes that won't stain. The face I like bright and dark colors over pastels isn't helping me haha.

Fortunately I've got that stain disaster mostly cleared up now.

Haha. It's funny because some aspects, like the waist, are nicer and more realistic than DD but then there's those legs and arms. I've read there's a little less posing flexibility in places like the knees because Danny prioritized joint appearance over flexibility, though I don't know if that's true or not.

I know that the faces are generally flatter and "less 3D" compared to DDs, but it could well be a design choice. I think of them sort of like a large version of figma faces, and maybe it's a choice to mimic an aspect of typical anime art, but I think it sort of clashes with the three-dimensionality of doll eyes.

Oh God, stains like that are my biggest fear. I’m glad you’ve got yours under control. I literally bought my Miku a brand new body because I couldn’t handle the stains she came with, treatment was taking weeks. I am not a patient person.

Smartdoll torsos are great, love the separation being just under the bust. I also appreciate the proportions. Dollfies look hungry. I’m always startled by how exaggerated their middles are when I change them.

I’ve heard smartdolls are less flexible in the legs, too. I haven’t tested it yet.

Smart Dolls are less flexible in the legs for sure. They don't bend as far in the knee. They don't have soft vinyl like DDs, so they can't dent in? the same way. Also they spread their legs, when they sit down, which is fine for the boys, but annoying on the girls. Their hip joint also cannot twist as much in my experience.

Sniiksnak, your reaction very much mirrors my reaction to Mirai. I wasn't immediately "wowed." The more time that passed, the less and less I liked her flat face... It just wasn't expressive, it didn't have a "spark," no matter how many eye/wig combos I tried. I ended up selling the head and keeping the body for a hybrid project, although if I'm honest I totally hate the hands. They look like little monkey hands to me -- the palms are too long and narrow to read human.

I may still get a Smart Doll in the future, if only because I love the darker skin tone options, and some of the new molds seem a bit more... promising? Maybe? But it's not a priority.

I never thought I could be THAT disappointed about something I thought I REALLY wanted. All the Smartdoll unboxing videos I binged when I first stepped into the hobby really made an impression on me. Looked fun. But now I can cross that off my bucket list.

I never gave Smartdoll hands much thought until I saw someone post a picture comparing them and Volks. They looked really wrong, Volks blew them out of the water in that department.

I think Danny should consider some life draw classes to cement his proportions. Their shins disturb me the most.

I'm sorry you were let down. That really sucks, especially considering how happy you are with your Miku and Rin, it's sad you couldn't love Cherry too. I think a lot of the Smartdolls really do have those "3D animation student project" look you described, with less dimension... I know a lot of people do like the SmD proportions, but I personally agree that the legs are a bit long (and the arms are a bit simple) though the torsos are very pretty. I don't think the Smartdoll aesthetic is for me and I guess it isn't for you either. I saw you were aiming for Luka so I'm cheering for you and your Vocaloid crew!

Haha, thank you. I am very much looking forward to bringing Luka home.

At least Smartdoll wise, I can enjoy owner pics, and the fun stories they tell with them. Some people just just know how to bring smartdolls to life, like K-2. How do they do it? _(:3 」∠)_
