caska Posted December 11, 2011 Hi~ Aside from caring and collecting your "daughters" from Volks do you guys have any more ridiculous hobbies? As for me I already assigned which is most important to me. since I think my hobby/collection is getting out of hand... 1.Audiophile equipment (this eats my spare time and gets most of my investment) 2.Photography.. camera / lens itch (it comes with the job) 3.NEW!! Dollfie Dream (just about to start my journey on this >_<) 4.ABJD (have several LE dolls and I might cut them by half and stop collecting for now) and tech gagets such as tablets and other old equipment that can make our life easier.. Ugh.. I need to see my doctor.. ლ(゚д゚ლ) help
TheParadisePanda Posted December 11, 2011 For me my other hobbies are way less expensive then my dollfie hobby. Still my other hobbies are: 1. Collecting Schliech and Breyer horses: Of course since i'm not super rich I placed a $20 limit on the breyers I buy. It makes shopping for Breyers a bit of a challenge but so far i've been lucky and found a few that I really love for cheap. I also love finding old vintage Breyer horses and cleaning them up to keep or sell. 2. Resin BJDs: I have a few resin bjds that I really like and i'm always on the look out for new ones I may be interested in 3. Transformers and Gi Joes: I love collecting transformers and have a few Gi Joes mostly from the recent lines. I really looking forward the new Transformers Prime toys hitting the shelves in my area, but like my Breyers I try to limit the amount of toys I buy to save space for dollfies. 4. Fashion dolls: I like monster high dolls along with a few other playline dolls. So really I have a lot of other hobbies that I place limits on so I can save money to go toward dollfie things. They really are the queens of my collections, so to speak lol
JoltFiend Posted December 11, 2011 I wouldn't say my hobbies are ridiculous, they're just expensive. Figmas, anime artbooks, video games, and I got a DSLR earlier this year so I've now been looking into getting another lens and a flash unit for it. I took a look at some flash units and seeing $300 kind of scared me. As did the $550 for a highly rated lens for my camera. I've got a decent job to feed these hobbies, but I eat cheap every day ^^; *edit* I can't believe I forgot to add this in here, as I'm listening to the game right now. I also have a half-season ticket package to the Los Angeles Kings. I think it's the fact that they've been sucking recently that I forgot to put that on the list. mitsuki Posted December 11, 2011 I collect rocks. I love drinking tea. I love trying new teas. I like to bake (especially in winter). I can't resist lotions and tiny cute bottles of perfume. I have a lot of costume jewelry and some fancier stuff, but mostly those are gifts from my mom. I have lots of supplies for bento making and also little cute bento boxes. I collect Japanese Kit Kats but they do get eaten, so I guess I have a hobby of eating Japanese Kit Kats and saving the wrappers so I can remember them. haha I definitely spend less on my other hobbies than I did before I started collecting DDs. PrettyCranium Posted December 11, 2011 Well for me: 1. David Bowie stuff. The last time I counted, I had over 260 recordings (vinyl, bootlegs, CDs, etc). I've slowed down with the DB stuff since the DDs have come into my life. 2. Anime figures. According to my profile on MyFigureCollection.com (http://myfigurecollection.net/profile/PrettyCranium), I have 265 items in my collection. 3. Knitting, spinning and other fiber arts things. Yes, spinning like making yarn on a spinning wheel. People still do that. My sister is actually an avid collector of spinning wheels, charkhas and other yarn-making things. Does sleeping count as a hobby? It's one of my favorite things . . .
LoveAngel Posted December 11, 2011 My hobbies apart from DD are: * Fitness : I love to lift weights and to take of my shape/health. I go to the gym at least 3 times a week after work. I also love jogging/running. * Brazilian Jiu Jitsu : aka BJJ. I started in last February and I felt in love with it. I'm the only woman in my team which makes things quite hard for me, but I still try my best. I practice it 2 times a week. Unfortunately, because of work, I had to limit a lot my hobbies. I quit Japanese and Sewing classes last year. And sincerely, I have been really inconsistent with sports too. I am not giving it up though! LoveAngel Posted December 11, 2011 Same thing with me, 3x a week its more of a lifestyle than a hobby need to be fit and healthy That is true... Getting older makes one even more concerned about such things. At least, in my case, yes. I have some figures too, but it's nothing compared to my boyfriend's collection. I enjoy his cuties the same way he enjoys my Yukino-chan. Gaming is something I adore too, but except for The Sims Social, I play almost nothing these days. baldylox Posted December 11, 2011 I used to have lots of hobbies but all of those have fallen by the wayside now that I am into DD's. But I used to be into: Vintage Star Wars toys. I had every toy Kenner produced from 1978 to 1985. And I also had tons of preproduction and prototype stuff as well. But I sold most of that off to fund my trip to Japan last year. Radio Controlled cars. I used to be BIG into these but haven't messed with them in a while. I occasionally run them around the house and with my sister but that's it. I still have 8 of them ranging from on road street cars to off road monster trucks to an actual dragster. All electric tho, I hate gas powered ones. Car audio. I was into this for half my life. And I still am kind of altho I don't actually buy anything anymore. Working in that field was extremely fun and I was always upgrading my car systems when new stuff was made available. But now that I am no longer working in that area, I can't really afford any of the high end stuff like I like. So I have to be content with the system I have for now. If I ever get around to getting a new car, THEN I can get some new toys. Woodworking. I like repairing old wooden furniture. I'm not so great at creating new things but I am pretty good at fixing and cleaning up old ones. I like wood and how it's so easy to work with. So many nice things can be made from it. And I love how wood finishes can feel and look so warm and inviting. But all that has taken a backseat to my DD collecting habits. Pretty much all my extra cash goes into funding more things for my girls. Not that it's a bad thing.... Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop. littlebearries Posted December 12, 2011 1. Reading! I love it, I always have a book with me, I feel naked without one XD I sustain my reading habit by running a book review blog. Through contests held by other blogs and being contacted by publishers to read a book for review, I've been able to get most of the books I'm interested in reading at the mere price of writing a review for it. (Although honestly, I stumbled on that cool bit of info AFTER starting the blog, which I started just to keep track of what I'd read) 2. Hot Chocolate, Tea and Coffee drinking. I'm obsessed... I have so many different flavors and brands and it still feels like it's not enough. The worst for me is going online and looking for new flavors, I start reading descriptions and then just have to have it. 3. Finding the world's best Chocolate Milkshake... which I can seriously say is a hobby, because whenever I find someplace new, I try one. Now, this doesn't mean I have chocolate milkshakes multiple times a day, in fact, I rarely ever have them... but when I do, I make note of certain things about them in my little notebook and rank them accordingly. LOL. 4. Collecting Pure Neemo: I don't feed them, at least, not after midnight, although I should. Then they'd multiply. 5. Drawing/Painting: I just bought a watercolor set and I'm in love!!! 6. D&D & Miniature painting... yes, I said it, every Wednesday night a group of guys comes over and we sit down and roll the ol' 20 siders. 7. Repainting things like Monster High Dolls, Tonner dolls and Ellowyne Wilde dolls. 8. Sewing bears (plush bears made from Mohair, aka, artist bears) ... I have a feeling there are a few more things I can add to this list... but as you see, I've got tons of hobbies... I like keeping busy Honestly, I feed a lot of my hobbies with my other hobbies. I love crafting, so I create things and sell them on ebay, and then that money turns around and goes back into hobbies... plus then there are things like the book blog, that help feed my reading hobby at no expense to me other than a little bit of my time. AerisAquata Posted December 12, 2011 I love to read and play video games! I'm always on the lookout for a good book. I like to collect other dolls, Monster High dolls specifically. I have one of every character out except for Gil and Clawd. I also like origami, but I'm useless at anything more difficult than a crane. I like to draw as well! I even paint some using Chinese watercolors. I really like music too, and I want to learn how to play the violin.
Galvatim Posted December 12, 2011 My other hobbies are just the typical boring old things... I collect quite a few types/brands of figures, Figma, Star Wars, Transformers, etc. This has been slowly dying down. I nearly lost any interest in Transformers after watching that dreadful Revenge of the Fallen movie. I also collect DVDs and Blu-ray. Anime for the most part, but there are a few live action films in my collection. My DVD collection is competing with my figure collection for space. I like reading too, mostly fiction/manga, but also history and mythology.
aeris Posted December 12, 2011 My major hobby was drawings. Right now I don't do anymore, and I am quite sad about this. It is my real great passion. I like japanese animation and mangas. I also have bonsaï and I like to take care of my pets ( 6 cats, 3 birds, and some fishes too). Bonsaï are not that expensive because I try to make my own with little trees I can find. My animals eat specific animal meat I like a lot to take photos. About collecting... I used to collect animation cels a few years ago. I used to buy a lot, from many series. Right now I did not buy one since more than a year though, and I try to sell most of my collection to feed my other hobbies. I only collect a few Last Unicorn cels yet or a few series from my childhood. I also collect sylvanian families. Because they are too cute! I collect only cats because...I love cats and I have no place and money enough to collect all the animals In my dreams, I would make a sylvanian village. I like a lot matriochkas dolls too, and have a "small" collection of them. Currently it is difficult to find some new artworks, so I don't need to feed them. Everything is already boxed for my future move. I miss them. Home : Hitomi, Kaori, Lily, Natsuki, Kotori, Yui, Kagami, Aï, Maya, Hana
Till Troll Posted December 12, 2011 Before DDs my hobbies were anime/manga, reading, videogames, Volks dollfie (barbie scale)/barbie/figure customising and repainting, drawing, and cosplay/general sewing. And playing the piano, which I don't do so often now, mores the pity. Unfortunately I got into DDs at the same time my thesis starting eating up all my waking hours! I've only just come out of all of it, and have time to do hobbies again, so at the moment I'm sewing, for home and for my DDs, reading and drawing again, and have gotten into Korean historical dramas (so many cliffhangers per episode!). And I've developed a tendency to make a lot of scale models when rearranging rooms/furniture, so I am also getting back into figure customising (what's this? my 1/10th scale craftroom model is the /perfect/ size for my revoltech girlies? Why ladies, feel free to move in!). Like many others here, I tend to have multiple crafty hobbies that I drift from and come back to as the year goes by never enough time! I really should get back into 1/6th scale dolls at some point, I've got so many bodies just waiting for painted heads, and my Aisha Clan Clan custom looks so forlorn without a face up... TheWhiteRabbit Posted December 13, 2011 Hmm hobbies? lol DD's are my more recent endeavor but I have yet to secure the funds to bring one home >.< I have a few other hobbies.... I collect PVC's, I have way to many lol... I do enjoy them but I am not buying as many as I used too. I build resin garage kits. I have a lot that I have completed and a ton I have not yet built. It's more fulfilling then pvc's I find. With Gk you get to create your figures are chose how you want them to look. So you have a little more attachment to them then a pvc that you just pop out of a box. (I hope to apply this to DD's eventually too when making my own customs) Aside from that I used to draw a lot but I find it hard to make the time, and same goes for photography. I love reading, I read all sorts of books. Comics, novels, manga, graphic novels, short stories... ect ect lol. The only dolls in my collection right now are my 12" Bleeding Edge dolls. I have 3. Thats about it I guess. AlmySidaKay Posted December 13, 2011 I used to be all world of warcraft, then I got into Magic the Gathering for a while, as well as always loving anime. But all of those kind of took a back burner the moment I found dolls. I still play WoW and Magic casually, but neither of these can hold a candle to how much I love the creative output that dolls give me. A hobby isn't supposed to leave you wistful, regretful and vaguely disappointed. Do whatever pleases you in this hobby, because otherwise, why do it at all? Poofiemus Posted December 13, 2011 Heheh, I got into DDs in part because it's like having three or four hobbies all lumped together in one epic mondo-hobby: collecting in general, anime, photography, storytelling (by way of photography), sewing/fashion design/cosplay, miniatures. . . .Some like anime and storytelling I was into before, and others like the photography and sewing I'd wanted to get into for a long time but never got around to it until I got DDs. But as for other hobbies. . . I'm also a big reader. I often favor fantasy and science fiction, though I think I read more fantasy than sci-fi, because I'm also into keeping up with real science via magazines like Discover and Pop Sci, so when a sci fi author hasn't done the research it's painfully obvious to me. XD (I do make allowances for stories published before various discoveries, but sometimes it's clear the author did little to no research at all.) My favorite authors include Anne McCaffery, Mercades Lackey, and the awesomely warped and funny Christopher Moore. I've also read and enjoyed some Piers Anthony and Robert Aspirin, and love Naomi Novik's Temeraire books though I'm curious what she'd write if she got a chance to do novels not part of that series. I feed this hobby by buying secondhand or by asking for gift certs to book stores for Christmas and my birthday. XD As a result of reading, I do also enjoy writing, again usually fantasy and sci-fi. For some reason, while I can do individual dramatic scenes, overall I often end up writing comedy. Usually I do my writing in November, because NaNoWriMo (the National Novel Writing Month) occurs during that time. It's a free event, which is both online and in person in local areas. The goal is to write 50,000 words worth of novel in 30 days. This year was the first I've skipped since I found out about NaNo in 2006, so I've done it 5 years; I've "won" twice and lost three times, and the ones I lost were due to poor planning. Some people can just leap into their novel with no plan, but I've found in my case that if I do that my characters have a high likelihood of blowing me off and eating breakfast and making fun of each other instead of saving the universe. This one I only have to feed with time, not money. I've also long been a crafty person, so I enjoy sculpting in polymer clay, modding and customizing things like old MLPs, and drawing (though the last is also tied to my animation career, so it doesn't always count as a hobby). Luckily my mom is crafty too, so a lot of the time I just mooch from her craft hoard instead of buying my own stuff. That'll probably change if I get a job out of state, so I'm going to enjoy it while I can! This last one I probably wouldn't count as a hobby usually, but seeing as how I've been playing this fairly steadily since late 2008 I guess it counts. I play the simple, free online game Dragon Cave (on dragcave.net), where you collect dragon eggs, raise them, then breed them for more dragon eggs. Raising them is pretty easy; they grow based on views and clicks, so I just toss my eggs into a fansite like Silvi's Lair and leave them be usually. XD Between that, and how fast they grow (they can take as little as a week to get from egg to adult), I've ended up with over 700 dragons. (Dork much? XD) Since I have most of the easy-to-get dragons, I've lately been focusing on a couple breeding projects of mine, an even-gen electric x nebula checkerboard and an all-breeds alliterative-named stairstep, plus have just started working on a mate for my lovely new arrowhead gold tinsel. (If you don't play the game, don't worry about what any of that means. XD) By the way, I have all the holidays except for the holly, so if any of you play and would like, say, a 2nd gen yulebuck or snow angel, shoot me a PM and I'll try to accommodate you. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
OtakuDepot Posted December 14, 2011 Usually I do my writing in November, because NaNoWriMo (the National Novel Writing Month) occurs during that time. I haven't taken part of the big NaNoWriMo as November is usually pretty busy for me but I did do a 50K novel for an AugNoWriMo (August) a few years ago. It was tough but also great fun. It was very nice being able to set that goal and complete it. Well, by "complete it" I mean the 50k words. I still haven't finished my novel. I'm about 4/5 of the way through the 1st draft and never got back to it. Ugh... I do feel bad about that. I'll add it to my list of things to do. I'd like to finish it, edit it, and even do a self publish just to have a copy for my own bookshelf. **James. littlebearries Posted December 14, 2011 ... and love Naomi Novik's Temeraire books though I'm curious what she'd write if she got a chance to do novels not part of that series. She wrote a short story in the collection called Zombies vs. Unicorns that was amusing. She's on Team Unicorn, lol. She's also worked on a Graphic Novel that I own but haven't read yet. galatia9 Posted December 14, 2011 I'm not collecting DD yet, but I have a feeling that once one gets in the door, another will follow! I already collect resin BJDs, I have twenty two, mostly 60cm and taller. I purchased most of my collection by selling my fashion doll collections (which I completely lost interest in after getting my first BJD). Now I tend to save my money to buy new BJDs, or get layaway if it is available. I also do American Civil War reenacting, which can be an insanely expensive hobby, what with muskets, horses, cannon, replica clothing, etc etc etc. But I'm a musician (a fifer), so my equipment is way cheaper. I tend to buy uniform items and equipment (like tents) second hand from my friends (also way cheaper). One of the most expensive parts of the hobby is now travelling to events! I love to read too, which fortunately is still affordable. Lately I have been really enjoying listening to modern music and have become a big fan of newer artists, and just bought my first MP3 player. For the longest time I listened to older music, jazz, classical, etc. but finally I was so sick of listening to the same old thing, I switched to a radio station that was playing something totally different, and I haven't changed the station since. PlasticFantastic Posted December 16, 2011 Where to even begin! My DD hobby came directly from my figure collecting hobby! I started with figma, then got hooked on Nendos, THEN moved on to PVCs and also Model kits! We have a LOT... And it drains a good chunk of money! My fella got into electric remote controlled cars starting with Tamiyas and then he moved on into Rock Crawlers and now into scaled buggies. I think we have 11 different RC cars all over the apartment! >_< Those two hobbies suck the most money - we have a serious love for anything Japanese! lol Please visit my YouTube channel for helpful DD tips, tutorials, and reviews!
