Wow That really shows what a face up can do!

I kinda pride myself in sculpt identification, and even though I saw the likeness I wasn't prepared for it to actually be Towa!

It all makes sense now though haha!

...I also had no idea...

...although exactly why they chose Towa I have no idea either - Karin would have made more sense...? She really doesn’t look like the character - so now I’m even more curious what they will do if they make her for real.

Wow, I never realized she was Towa... Lol I should have looked at the placard, I was too excited to see her in person The power of faceups is too strong. Tbh tho, I really prefer Towa with this face up.

Thaks for those. With the lighting in your first and last pictures you can slightly see Towa's unpainted upper lip and that the mouth has been extended by painting.

 

As Torino pointed out, if she gets made, it will be interesting to see what she actually looks like. If they keep this look, at the very least I think they would still change the sculpt so it matches the faceup i.e. with the mouth and if they're changing it anyway probably make other changes. But she also doesn't really look very much like the action figure, so she might get a completely different sculpt. If they do the latter I'll probably be disappointed with the result because I fell in love with what they already did. But I want them to do the former, not just use Towa's head because I'm sure looking at her close up in person what they did with the mouth isn't going to look nice.

 

As I brought up earlier about how some of the sewing is pretty sloppy, it seems pretty clear this is something they kind of threw together to see how it was received. The mech stuff looks clean but it's likely 3D printed using the same 3D data that already existed for the figure so that was the easy part. I think it's still less detailed than we might expect for a final product.

I'm hoping that she does get her own sculpt, but hopefully with a blend of what they did here and some improvements to make her closer to her character. But I also wouldn't really complain if they kept her face as is.

 

I'm thinking that if she is released she might be in Matoi's price range due to all the mech pieces;;;

She will probably cost more than whatever standard pricing is when she comes out. OTOH Volks shouldn't have to pay a 3rd party a licensing fee so who knows.

 

There probably won't really be extra outfits for her either, but I wonder if they would make attachments like they have for the figure?

Wait, isn't VOLKs the creator of this specific character? Meaning, wouldn't they of all people, know which doll looks like their character? Or is this not their OC? Sorry if that's wrong. Where in the ever living day lights do I get my info, I need to research more. OTL

 

Considering that she is to bridge a gap between model figures and dollfies, I'd assume the Towa head is a prototype. I don't think I've heard of VOLKS recycling heads, but considering it's a common thing in the model figure community, it leaves alot of curious doors open.

 

She looks really pretty though, Ouch, my ever growing wish list.

It's hard to know what goes through the collective minds of Volks.

 

But yes this is Volks' own character AFAIK, and it seems like they just chose the Towa head as a starting point because it was close to what they wanted in shape. The way they painted the mouth to essentially hide what the sculpt actually looks like strongly suggests they wouldn't use this sculpt as is for a production run of this doll, but presumably modify it to look like their vision but still ending up with a somewhat similar head.

 

Or they could do something entirely different, who knows. The sloppiness of the outfit we discussed earlier and how the wig from the back is a bit messy all suggest this prototype was put together kind of quickly or without a lot of planning. Still they put a lot of effort into that faceup, which is obvious by how good it looks and by the fact myself and some others here are so surprised to learn it is Towa.

 

I noticed artwork for the character doesn't look a whole lot like the small figure either so that all seems open to whatever interpretation they choose.

 

If they make the DD I hope she does turn out close to the look they came up with since that's what I liked about this when she was revealed.

It was your pics on Instagram that first had me questioning the flatness. Like SMD super cute from the front but odd 3/4 and profile flatness. As I began to really study the pics more closely. I can't handle that in person, In pics it's no bother but handling the head in real life is different.

I wanted to use her to make a custom, so this just being a proto-type kinda gives me hope for when the actual girl is released she may work out.

Hopefully Volks will figure out some way to keep the straight-on Towa cuteness with a better side profile. I also didn't recognize Towa, yet another example of how a faceup can completely change a doll. I would be okay with it being a Towa release anyway, I think she has made it on to my 'need' list.
