cfx Posted January 22, 2018 Hello. I'm an old guy living in the middle of nowhere in Texas who used to work as a computer programmer. I somehow discovered anime back in the mid 1980's before much of anything was available officially translated into English other than butchered things such as Robotech and a heavily edited Nausicaa. Used to buy anime on import laserdiscs and later the hobby became kind of dormant after losing any connections for info on new stuff after moving. Since about 1990 I've been into videogames, mostly Japanese ones, and 3-4 years ago I started buying figures; I'm also on MFC with the same username, (which has no meaning because I have no creativity). I'm a fan of Miku which can be seen by the number of figures I have of her. I'm not really sure when I became aware of Dollfies; I knew Volks, Kotobukiya, and Max Factory, from the 80s as garage kit companies and the plethora of Five Star Stories kits Volks made. Anyway somehow I was aware of the dolls and I think what caugt my attention a few years ago was DD Miku. I didn't actually like her because I feel her face sculpt and faceup don't look like the character but still I was impressed with her outfit, hair, and just the fact that she existed. Around mid-2016 I found this forum and I wanted to make my own custom but due to expense and feeling kind of overwhelmed at the whole idea and dealing with a lot of personal problems I dropped the idea. Late last year, in time for my birthday, a friend pieced together a doll for me and here I am. This hobby is going to have to remain fairly small scale for me as I can't afford a large collection nor do I really want that because I'd rather have a very limited number of dolls that I have more of an attachment to. I am eyeing Sheryl Nome though lol. I'm shy but I also talk (type) too much.
Gabriel Posted January 22, 2018 Sounds familiar. Fellow coder here with anime fandom with what is likely similar roots. Same general view of the DD Miku. Same general intent with my first DD, which didn't survive contact with reality. Like you I've been after a Macross Frontier DD girl for a long time, but I've been on the Ranka side of the fence. Looking forward to seeing pics of your Miku.
ajl Posted January 22, 2018 Hey! I'm new too! I don't have a doll yet, but I'm hoping to stick to a small number as well. Right now I just really want to stick to one. I know a lot of people say that they just want x number of dolls and end up getting more so I don't want to say for sure how many I'll end up with... but I do have a pretty limited budget so that'll definitely help. I'd love to see some pictures of your doll though! It's really neat seeing pictures of everyone's dolls. They're very inspirational for me.

cfx Posted January 23, 2018 Thanks to all of you for the welcome. Pictures: Photography is another one of my lapsed hobbies; in the film days I did that quite a bit. Now I have a nice digital camera that I never seem to use and so I'd really like to combine the doll hobby with photography. For the moment, my doll has had a little accident so she's not quite ready to greet the world, but I'm taking care of that. Gabriel: Ranka's a nice DD too. I've not had a chance to watch Macross F, but the original Macross movie from 1984 is one of my favorite anime things. I wish I had saved the blog link, somewhere I saw a custom Minmay DD that was very nice. And yes, I know too well how the limits we set get smashed; I now have over 60 figures and 8 or so on preorder now and never really envisioned buying that many. So who knows how this hobby will go, but I'm pretty sure I'll never be up there with those that own like 50. I looked at your MFC profile and we have a few of the same figures; you're the only other person I've ever looked at there that also owns the Bome Misty May figure! I treasure her because there basically aren't any other figures of Kenichi Sonoda characters. Bellatrix: Thanks for the kind words, and I love your faceup work. Ajl: I've been browsing through the long random photo thread here seeing everyone's dolls for inspiration and ideas.

I wish I had saved the blog link, somewhere I saw a custom Minmay DD that was very nice. I think Macross Frontier is pretty good. It's probably my third fave after the original and Plus, with Macross II in it's own separate category. As for the original movie, it's a fave too. I've watched it a pretty ludicrous amount. As for the Minmay DD, was it Missadventure's? viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16009&start=0&hilit=minmay
cfx Posted January 23, 2018 As for the Minmay DD, was it Missadventure's? viewtopic.php?f=15&t=16009&start=0&hilit=minmay No, that one is nice as well but looks very different. This one had a faceup done in a style that somehow mimiced Haruhiko Mikimoto's art or at least the way the art was done in the move, and she had the dress from the end of the movie which I'm sure was custom made. It was also a head with rounder eyes; perhaps DDH-06 or may have been a limited head I don't remember now if I could tell. The thing that really stuck with me was how perfect the wig was and how it was styled; the little side curl thing on her hair was perfect. She also had custom eyes with the multiple large round catchlights. I'm pretty sure it was on a Japanese blog or twitter, but I have looked at so much stuff over the past month I don't know. I think it was just a picture without other information but I can't be sure anymore. I can't believe I didn't save it. Probably because it was one of those things I knew there's no way I'd be able to replicate because it no doubt was very expensive to do at that level.
