I'm currently reading The Hunger Games.

I've read this series and gotten it for several people for Christmas!

If you like the premise, I recommend reading Battle Royale too (but not the comic... *shudders* so many mullets.... gah)

i've been meaning to pick back up on my Alfred Hitchcock's Tales of Terror book. i've only read a few chapters (although, each chapter is just a different short story).

I've read this one. It has some terrific stories indeed. Also as I'm waiting very much for the new «Girl with the dragon tattoo» movie I'm currently finishing the original book. And I'm very impressed with it. Many of my friends didn’t recommend it to me, saying the language was dull and hard. But surprisingly I like it from the first to the last word. Lisbeth is a very strong and impressive character and I’m looking forward to her cinematographic visualization.

I'm currently reading Villette by Charlotte Brontë. (I love her works; heck, I love most of the sisters' writings. I could reread Jane Eyre until my eyes fall out~) I am really enjoying Villette; I'll be sorry when it's finally over~ (Although I do want to see how the story unfolds--I really enjoy Lucy's point of view.)

I read "Villette" once. "Jane Eyre" is one of my favorite books ever, and I really enjoyed "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall" by Anne Bronte. But for some reason, "Villette" didn't grab me the way the others did. Maybe I'll give it another try.

If you haven't read it, check out "Rebecca" by Daphne du Maurier, it's a fun read (and much better than the movie version with Joan Fontaine and Laurence Olivier, though that's very good too).

Right now I'm slogging through "Anna Karenina" by Tolstoy for the first time. It's enjoyable and intriguing, but it's still a slog. Maybe I don't have the best translation.

Perhaps the fact that Villette is such a long book with a relatively slow progression added to that? Jane Eyre is much more fast-paced by comparison. I'm also enjoying Villette because of the quasi-French elements and the fact that everyone is always speaking French. It's reminding me how much I've forgotten!

Thank you for the suggestion~! I'll put Rebecca on my list.

I'm sorry that Anna Karenina is somewhat dragging. It can be so difficult to select a good translation. ;_; I'd love to be able to read great works in their original language, but I haven't put in the effort to learn. e_e

I'm currently reading The Hunger Games.

I kind of want to read that series, but I'm not really sure if it'll be good for my tastes or not. It sounds like Battle Royale-lite almost.

I'm currently reading Spice and Wolf (the novel version) volume 5. It's the storyline of the second half of the second season of the anime it seems so far, so nothing new for me yet. Looking forward to when I can read past where the anime ended!

Are you ready to rock? ^_^

It is in the first book and somewhat in the second book as well... but in the second book the author is starting to look more behind the scenes which is something that didn't happen too much in Battle Royale.

If you enjoyed Battle Royale, it's worth the read... but if Battle Royale wasn't your thing, I'd skip it.

There were a few things in the book series that I didn't like, but overall it was a fun, quick read.

I'm working on a nonfiction book entitled Early Retirement Extreme, by Fisker. He was an engineer who retired in his early 30s if I recall (just started the book), and I am curious to see what his philosophy of life was that enabled him to do so.

If you enjoyed Battle Royale, it's worth the read... but if Battle Royale wasn't your thing, I'd skip it.

I think DJStarstriker's indecision might be that they liked Battle Royale SO much, they are worried that Hunger Games might feel like a knock-off of BR's idea rather than a fully-developed idea in its own right. That's the impression I get anyway. I haven't read Hunger Games either so I actually have the same worry ^_^;.

The characters are fascinating, and I love how different they are. I am actually thinking (as I read it) that I may go look for translation recommendations when I am done with it.

"Rebecca" isn't nearly as epic in scale as "Jane Eyre", but I really enjoyed it. I hadn't seen the movie before I read it, which is my preferred way to read a book that has been made into a movie. One of my favorite books of all time is "The Caine Mutiny", and it is SO much better than the movie version that there's no comparison. I remember when I finished reading it, I was so angry... because I knew that I would never again enjoy it as much as I did the first time. (I reread books a LOT.) I've never had that reaction on finishing a book before. I had no idea how it was going to end, because I had never seen the movie or play versions of it.

I actually finished The Hunger Games yesterday, and, I actually liked it though I didn't like Battle Royale. But that had more to do with the prose than the content.

I recently finished 11/22/63 and am now reading Shadow's Edge by Brent Weeks. It's book two of his Night Angels trilogy. I had gotten book one from a signing he was doing at SDCC a couple of years ago. It was slightly interesting having him ask if he could get his picture taken with me since I was wearing my Square Enix shirt.

I liked it. I think its one of his better not-so-much-horror books that he's written, and I've read just about everything he's released. It was well paced, and towards the end I really couldn't put it down. In fact I sat at my desk reading instead of working. XD

Now that I've graduated and the holidays are over, I've gotten a chance to do some more reading myself, mostly courtesy of the lovely used book store a couple blocks away from where I live.

First, Manta's Gift by Timothy Zahn. I think the only thing I didn't like about this book was the title! The premise is somewhat similar to James Cameron's Avatar, in that it does involve a quadraplegic being transferred into an alien body, but it's handled quite differently. (It may be worth noting that the book came out way back in 2002.) One of the biggest differences is the main character's personality, in that he actually has one. He starts off as one of those characters that's really entertaining to see in fiction, but that you know you'd be totally annoyed by in real life, and it's gratifying to see how he grows throughout the story. Another big difference is that the aliens in Manta's Gift aren't humanoid at all, and their society is probably more analogous to a pod of whales or a herd of elephants than any human culture, which I personally not only found far more interesting than the Native-American-Expy Navi but also seems to tone down the preachiness effect too. Basically, if you liked the idea of Avatar but thought the execution was annoying, I'd recommend giving Manta's Gift a shot.

Next, The Enduring Flame Triolgy by Mercades Lackey and James Mallory. I did enjoy this trilogy, but I think I'll have to re-read it to figure out why beyond really liking the main characters, though I know there was plenty else to like. Again, premise sounds kind of stereotypical: teenage kid and his best friend are prophesised to save the world so they go out to do so. Part of the spin though is that when they set out, they have no idea that saving the world is anywhere on their agenda, and in fact don't find that out until the end of the first book. (The reader however gets plenty of hints, so it's not really a spoiler to say so.) The fantasy adventures in this story are portrayed in a grimmer light than I had originally expected; by the third book I'd say what they're going through is downright grueling, which was kind of a nice change from the Gary Stu tendencies that are far more common. I'd say though these books are good if you read fast like I do but could easily become tedious if you read slowly.

And now I'm in the middle of Earthly Joys by Philippa Gregory. Can't make a complete call on it yet since I'm not done. However, I'll admit I'm surprised at how much I'm liking it so far. My grandmother loaned it to me, and I was kind of expecting it to be a complete downer like the other Gregory book she lent me a while back, Fallen Skies. Thankfully, though it isn't a comedy by any means, it isn't depressing either and the main character is quite likeable, a must for me. I can report back later once I'm done if anyone's interested in a more detailed review.

In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.

I'm currently reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I enjoyed the new U.S. film and I'm liking the book as well. Even if it is a little over descriptive. Next I'll start on Destined, the newest book in the H.O.N. series. That series is beginning to fall apart but I'd hate to abandon it after following it for so long.

Hopefully the Casts (the authors) will see their mistakes and improve on the books. Hopefully!

I just finished Cold Magic, and I heartily recommend it to anyone who's a fantasy fan.

Also, Taolili, you should watch the Swedish Millennium Trilogy (the series The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is part of) films, they're amazing. Noomi Rapace's Lisbeth is my hero.

I plan on watching the Swedish films too. It's just that I've read that they sort of lose focus with each entry, but who knows? I might still like them, haha. I also love Rooney Mara's portrayal of Lisbeth.

After reading some of you guys talk about manga I decided to go to my local bookstore and pick something up (I haven't bought new comics in like yeears lol). They didn't have any of the series I hadn't finished but I bought a couple volumes of a new series I decided to try out called 'Dengeki Daisy'.

"The Crippled God", 10th and final book in the "Malazan Book of the Fallen" series by Steven Erikson. Highly recommended if you enjoy epic fantasy, and authors like George RR Martin. Had problems getting around to reading it though as I don't want it to end!

I'm back reading Right Ho Jeeves. It's very very funny, but I think this is mainly due to the completely unconventional narrator that is Bertie Wooster.

OHMYGOD MISSKALE I LOVE YOU FOR KNOWING JEEVES AND WOOSTER.

I, sadly, have not been able to find the books around here yet, so I've just been reading really good fanfiction and fan discussions on IndeedSir.

Also, I am currently reading the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. I'm on the fourth book, Summer Knight.

I've actually been reading them on my phone's kindle app, since some of them are free on Amazon that way.

I first saw the show with Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry, I'm only just now reading the books.

My husband and I even named our parrot Bertie.

I'm actually reading "Body Work" by Sara Paretsky.

I'm a slow reader and have had this book since march lasy year and tend to pick and put down, then leave a book for months before returning to it.

I prefer audio plays or audio books. Here I am currently listerning to "Dr Who: Eight Truths"

On my pad I prefer to read some old comics from my youth like 2000ad, TV 21, Countdown, TV Action, as I have found these all in cbr format.

In other words it's just a well that the book market don't realie on me to keep it a float with my slow reading.
