jadepixel Posted March 26, 2011 I used the tape mask to do my gal's eyebrows. It totally failed with dry pastel powder (messy rough edges) but it worked great for a light coat of acrylic or pastel+water. I have a hard time creating symmetrical brows so the tape template saved me a lot of hassle. Once the basic placement is right I can remove the tape and polish up the brows however I like. jadepixel doll lab jadepixel eye shop

DivinitaAria Posted March 26, 2011 So much awesome advice! I think for the eyebrows I might start with brushing pastel on and using an erase to refine the shape and what not. Seal the head. Then mix some medium in with the paint, use the smallest liner I have (10/0) and paint over the pastel guidelines. I'll definitely have to dobleepent the steps I take. Also, opinions on blushing the cheeks and adding red/pink highlights? (as seen in the first example here http://volksusa.com/ddoh0020.html). I like this idea for the character I have in mind whose more on the moe side! Usually when I sketch, I add these little highlights on the cheeks. Claudia Posted March 26, 2011 if you want use mask i can maybe gave a help from Airbrushing. there are a liquid mask tool called rubbelkrepp in german. its a kind of liquid rubber( which you can use also , liquid latex). You put its on the face parts you want save with a brush after drying there cant get under the mask form color so no bleeding. after drying color you can rub it away with your fingers. maybe that can help and its better as use masktape
Little-Rock Posted May 11, 2011 Is nail polish remover a good way to wipe a previous faceup or is it going to ruin the head? I'm not completely satisfied with my faceup and I want to wipe it. I use nail polish remover (without acetone) for my resin dollfies and I was wondering if it worked on vinyl as well.

DivinitaAria Posted May 12, 2011 For faceup removal, I use Windsor and Newton Brush Cleaner. Works great ! I bought it at Michael's for I think $6. I have yet to test it on a DD head, but I can tell you that it removes paint, gloss, thinner, ect from doll heads. Leaves no scent, clean well and is the best I've used thus far. I'd always test on a small, inconspicuous area if you're worried about results.
Maridah Posted July 23, 2011 I've used one of the sets of paint from volks that comes with the thinner and it's decent and a good starting point. However, after buying and using Golden's Fluid Acrylic I'm going to use it from now on. It is very high pigment and thin (used for glazes in painting usually) so it's a perfect consistency for faceups right out of the bottle. With some small watercolor brushes, I was a happy camper with my last couple face up trials. One thing I did notice that I wanted to warn everyone about is the ZM Make Pen. It can discolor the vinyl, turning it slightly yellow even if you use the ZM Finishing Powder Spray UV-Cut first. It took me a while to figure out it wasn't any of the paints I've used when doing the faceups but in fact the marker for planning the faceup. In the future I think I'm going to switch to a watercolor pencil. Winsor and Newton Brush cleaner is great for getting rid of old faceups and fixing mistakes (I use a q-tip to correct errors) so I can attest to it being safe to use on DD heads. I've soaked an old faceup before in it without ill effect. ♔ http://www.BJDAtelier.com/ Clothes for DD & BJDs
Pihlajakoto Posted December 7, 2011 I made my first face-up try and it went wrong so bad... I wanted to make it again better and removed the face-up. Unfortunately the reddish brown gameworkshops acrylic paint I used for eyebrows and eyelashes had stained the vinyl bright orange. It seems that I might get the stains of with Remove-Zit, but if I want to paint a new face-up I would need new paints (at least the brown paint needs to be changed). I guess I'll try to buy Volks's acrylic paint through Les Golfes. My blog Pihlajakoto

I guess I'll try to buy Volks's acrylic paint through Les Golfes. I'm so sorry this happened I hate that it was learned the hard way, but this is good information. I always wondered how the acrylics made for painting on metal might work on vinyl, since I've got tons of reaper paints. As for getting new paints, I recommend Liquitex artist grade (that's what is in the Volks tiny tubes anyhow)... if you plan on doing a lot of faceup work, you might as well buy the non Volks packaging of it, it will be cheaper in the long run!! Also, I don't know if this is helpful or not, but reds and oranges are very staining colors... so I usually put on an extra coat of sealer spray before painting with those! I wish you lots of luck!!!!! I hope Remove-Zit works for you!
Pihlajakoto Posted January 9, 2012 Two weeks treatment with remove-Zit and the heads are still The orange colour is fainter but still way too visible. But on a brighter side I got Volks acrylics I just don't know yet what that clear liquid in the set is... I'll practice painting with these heads and when (and if) I'm good enough I'll purchase new DDH-03 with soft head cap. My blog Pihlajakoto

"Start on lighter color" as people says. I am thinking to re-face up my girl too... It seems that the Mr. Hobby Flat that I mean to protect thee face-up who ruin it. Her face turns YELLOWISH and there's some "black spot" since the spray layer wear off. So, if you're using Mr. Hobby... perhaps you should just use Zoukeimura since the first place. Kumi Posted February 28, 2012 Mr Super Clear Flat (MSC, the standard one) is one of the best sealants used in faceups. Most artists I know are using it. I've heard that UVCut version is much worse because it yellows (because of UV, ironically...).

Kumi Posted February 28, 2012 Well, You can use almost any clear flat acrylic spray, but some may yellow in time or react with vinyl. I'd say buy Mr Super Clear Flat standard (not the UV-Cut version). It just works. Tamiya TS-80 Flat Clear is also used for faceups, or MrHobby TopCoat Flat. But MSC and Zoukeimura are most widely recommended.

Nightmare Tea Posted May 12, 2012 I would just like to say that while I was modding my hdd-01, I tested out how watercolour pencils worked on vinyl, and the result was that it didn't draw very well... Really light lines (even when I pressed hard) and chunkyness. I wouldn't use it instead of paint. It would work for sketching out your face-up idea on the head, though.
Kumi Posted May 12, 2012 Actually, in many cases watercolor pencils are used as paint - with water and brush, of course. You don't draw with them, only taking the paint with wet brush.
