1/3 or 1/4?

Recommended Posts

Do prefer dolls that are taller, smartdoll, Dolllfie Dream dynamite, etc. or do you like mini super dollfie and mini dollfie dreams? Why?

I personally prefer 1/4 because it's easier to find room for it, cheaper to shop for in general (dolls and clothes), easier to carry around too. But I collect both, because not all heads look good on the MDD body + the height differences between them makes it more interesting, than just having one size.

I totally prefer 1/3. My first BJDs were resin 1/3 scale. I think the larger size has a wonderful presence, and they are easier for me to handle and sew for.

I also prefer mature dolls over child dolls.

1/3 for me for this reason; no personal interest in child or child-like dolls.

I'm pretty much the same as above. I prefer the 1/3 dolls, and have no interest in child dolls. Thy only way I get an MDD is if they release one of the child idols from iM@S as an MDD, and I kind of hope they don't, or if they do release one of them it's as a DDP.

Mostly the why is anime and games. This hobby started as an extension of, and has essentially replaced, my figure collecting hobby.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

iM@S Anzu would probably be made as an MDD I'd suspect. I think she'd look too old as a DDP.

I corrected my post above; obviously I meant 1/3 not 1/4 duh.

In my case it's just an (expensive) supplement to the figure hobby, but even there I generally only find the more mature type characters appealing and don't really have any loli types. Maybe it's becauase I'm an old guy and also don't really like children lol.

There are some others like Miria and Miku who may fit either MDD or DDP.

Even as someone who has three 1/4 boys, I'd still say I prefer 1/3 all the way. I mean, MDDs are of course adorable and I love mine, but I don't find them as comfortable to hold or sit with, so I find that I spend way less time with them on average. I spend more time looking at them than doing anything with them.

Also sort of in the same boat that I'm not super keen on children, so that carries over to dolls for me as well. I often feel somehow limited in what I can do with them because of their ages. But I'm not quite sure why. Styles and things don't seem to click with them as easily as things fall into place for my 1/3s.

And then I'm not super into owning girl dolls 95% of the time either, so one can see why MDD/MSD doesn't usually hold my attention unless I really like the head sculpt itself I really don't care about little girl characters in anime or games at all. I can't bring myself to.

But on the flipside(because I'm a hypocrite lol), if Volks ever made boy MDDs, they'd probably have my attention. But I can't think of any particular boy characters I'd want anyway though. Speaking of Idolm@ster, I guess maybe the Side M Mofumofuen boys. But that's less for liking their characters and more for liking the sheep and bunny outfits. BUT, that wouldn't fix the issue that I think they're less...comfy to "hang out" with on a daily basis.

The smaller size of 1/4 dolls (or even 1/6) are amazing in some ways:

They are easier to store (something to consider if you have to many dolls to display and have to rotate them), clothes are 'generally' cheaper, they are more portable if you like to carry dolls around (in house, parks, etc), and they can be displayed in a lot more places.

My biggest problem with most 1/4 (and if we are talking about general dolls, 1/6 as well) dolls is they are usually aged between 6-12 years old. While I like a few child dolls in my collection, I prefer the 'adult' look more. There have been a few doll companies (not Volks) that have made 'older-looking' 1/4 dolls, but then the problem is that it is hard to find 'grown-up' clothing for dolls in that size.

I prefer 1/3 scale dolls of DD/SmDoll/BJD type because they are the 'older' looking dolls, are usually sculpted with more precision and detail, and fit the characters I am generally looking for. As someone already mentioned, they are also much easier to sew for. I also have better luck at finding shoes that fit in the 1/3 scale as compared to 1/4 (greater variety of foot sizes and it is harder to make proper shoes for smaller feet).

I do have two smaller dolls (1/4 scale and 1/6 scale respectively) that have 'older' qualities about them that I adore. If that "Pocket Mirai" doll Danny never finished was actually a thing I would probably have 10 of them. LOL

Yeah, I'm not against the smaller scales as sizes. I have scale figures in 1/4, 1/7 and 1/8 and a few 1/12. It's just that in dolls 1/4 usually means young or otherwise child-like characters and those don't appeal to me personally.

I actually feel this exact same way, but the reverse -- my 1/3 DDs I'll dress up nice and then just like to look at all perfectly presented for a long time on the shelf without wanting to change them. With my 1/4 dolls, I want to mess around with their outfits all the time, or have them hang out on my desk, or say if I get an idea for a new piece of clothing I want to make I can usually knock it out in 1/4 scale in one or two sittings, stuff like that. For me I think it's twofold, for one because waaay back in the day my first resin dolls were 1/4 scale for cost reasons, and for two, 1/4 dolls' bodies (and MDDs especially) are a lot more gender neutral. 1/3 DDs have pretty well-defined feminine body types, but an MDD doesn't really have to read as female or gendered at all, which is pretty big to me for personal reasons, haha. I know a lot of people's MDDs are super frilly super girly lolita style, which is super cute and I love to see it! But I actually get kind of weirded out if I dress my own MDDs too girly, it's all short shorts and oversized jackets in this household

my first time seeing either was in a volks store when I went to japan. I've seen photos of a bunch of dolls but in person I have to say 1/3 captures more attention when you walk into a room with them for the first time. For me I gravitated towards 1/3 right away.

This is how I feel exactly! (Down to the Japan volks store part... it's eerie )

The first doll I ever saw in person was a 1/4 scale resin boy, and while he was cute and delicate and all, he (and other dolls in his scale and under) didn't really capture attention in the way a 1/3 scale doll does. Plus, larger scale = more potential for detail = sewing and crafting dreams become a reality!

The post above this signature was probably TLDR, and I am very sorry.

1/3 are my preferred size, the size is intimidating at first but I like the more mature look, it's hard to get that look in a 1/4. The 1/3 is also easier to sew for, I do like the 1/4 size for a sibling but only 1 or 2 most are 1/3 size.

I like both for various reasons. I would have to say that my favourite doll is my MDD, Miya she kind of just steamrolled her way into my heart and we bonded immediately.

Overall, I prefer owning 1/3 size dolls. I like that with 1/3 scale there is more options for clothes and shoes, and if that fails --- sewing for that size is easier. The downside is that they are harder to pack/travel with. Even carrying a vinyl girl can get tiring after awhile. It might just be me, but I also feel less annoyance at paying for 1/3 things. Sometimes 1/4 and 1/3 items are priced the same, but if there's slightly more fabric it's ok?

I also like how there's more body options & a variety of sculpts for 1/3 scale dolls.

For 1/4 I really appreciate how easy it is to travel with them, plus they are light + MDDs are even lighter I do want to have another MDD but I'm really picky with the sculpts, so it seems like it will be awhile before I get another one. A majour downside with MDDs in particular are their wrist joints+ how no one sells it separately :'3

That's true for me too. I've posted earlier I'm not really interested in child-like dolls so MDDs aren't really my thing. But that said, I think Prisma Ilya, Cirno, and Ilya are really cute so I do get the appeal there. Most of the older ones I don't like at all, and I really dislike the DDH-01 head and its squashed look.
