Volks no longer going to accept Paypal?

Recommended Posts

vhdangel

Just saw this on the Volks website:

eLPblTL.png

*red emphasis is mine*

Is this temporary? Or do you think that Volks is no longer accepting Paypal? I know people have had issues with the system, but there have also been issues with Volks accepting foreign credit cards, so many of us tend to use it even with the high fees.

This is sad.

Can anyone suggest a good credit card that works well with the Nico verification program?

I sure hope this isn't permanent.

Otherwise I feel like VOLKs are seriously shooting themselves in the foot when it comes to catering to the international market considering alot of individuals prefer to pay with PayPal, and might not even own credit cards.

Me being one of those many people.

Perhaps there is policy change with PayPal that we don't know about because we aren't on the business side that Volks feels they can't agree too. Even eBay is dropping PayPal. PayPal was the way I paid as it was easy, so this is sad news for me. Guess next time I buy I'll find out if I have any issues with my credit card. But I really feel for those that don't have plastic to fall back on.

Didn't they do this once before, but then re-instated it for each of the lotteries?

Wait... what?? eBay owns Paypal, are they really getting rid of it?

PP hasn't been subsidiary of eBay since 2015, it was sorta chopped off as a whole independent separate company

Not sorta, definitely went off as an independent separate company, they even sent out emails at the time for the changes in their ToS and Ebay too, about their seller and buyer protections not being the same as PPs after they were separated.

To the point of this thread though, if they really don't accept PayPal ever again, I'll be really sad I do have a prepaid card, but then how much I pay and where will be written in my bank statements to which my parents have access to, and I don't really like that...

It does suck if you don't have a CC you can use on international site.

But Volks charged an extra fee for using PayPal so I never used it. =P

Capital One has worked for me on both Volks sites. Quicksilver doesn't have foreign transaction fees.

Wow this news really sucks... This really just means I won't be able to buy from Volks anymore. I'm not going to get a credit card just to buy from one company. I'm sure I'm not the only person this affects so negatively.

Ditto. I had joked about how moving back home would mean my hobby would move from easy mode to hard mode but I didnt expect lunatic mode.

Anyone use a debit card with volks? I'm really not wanting to get a credit card either and especially not one solely to use for one website, but I have used debit cards in credit card fields before without issue. I'm just going to need to make a new one.

I really hope its temporary. ._.

As a seller, you can now accept credit cards as well as paypal. Ebay has done several cross promotions with paypal credit in the past several months so I'd say that they are not planning on dropping Paypal.

Hopefully VolksUsa will continue to accept Paypal. (If they do announce it though, I suppose I'll be ordering Towa sooner rather than later)

For the people who don't want a credit card, you can look into other types of cards, such as torino mentioned, debit cards and the ones I said, prepaid cards. I don't believe there's any problem with using them just as credit cards, they use the same fields such as credit cards (I use my prepaid for Steam).

A prepaid card is like a wallet, you pay a fee to put money in it and use it to pay for anything you want. If someone somehow is able to get your card's info, the only thing they can steal is whatever is in the card. In any case, you can go to your bank and find out more about these types of cards.

I learned the hard way years ago never to use a debit card for online shopping. They don't have the same protections as a credit card. With a CC you can call and say a charge wasn't you, and then not have to worry about it. With a DC, it's taken right out of your account, and then you have to 1st contact the company that received the money and try to get them to reverse the charges. If they won't or can't, then you have to file a report with your bank and do your best to prove it wasn't you, and only then they maybe will give you your money back. But the whole time that money is missing.

I can't speak for outside the USA, but most CC offers I get don't have an annual fee to keep the account open. And you have 30 days to pay it off without being charged interest. So if you save up your money before hand and only buy what you have funds for, then when the bill comes you pay it off and are good to go. And since there are no PayPal fees, it might even be a bit cheaper. So having a CC isn't that much different then using PayPal, as long as you are smart and have self control. Besides, it's a good idea (In the USA anyway.) to have a CC to build up a credit history. To do that, buy a $100 item, and then take 4 months to pay it off. Yes you'll pay some interest, but it shows you as being a responsible person. Do that a couple times a year and you'll end up having a nice credit score. And then never close that credit account. It can be something small, like a $500 limit (That's how I started.). It's very important to build a credit history if you ever want a car loan or to buy a house. Now a days you even need a credit history to get utilities or a cell phone in your name, or even rent an apartment.

Okay, that's enough of my fatherly advice. Now I guess I should end with a dad joke. When I retire I'd love to live in a lighthouse. I don't need anything flashy...

Indeed it's not a good idea to use a debit card online; potentially it puts everything in your bank account at risk.

To my knowledge, prepaid cards work most anywhere a credit card does while Debit cards aren't accepted some places in place of credit; I believe Mandarake is like this.

As far as I understand it, you don't even need to pay something off over months to get a good credit rating; just use a card regularly and pay it off on time always. It's what I've always done as I'm cheap and hate paying more for anything than required; hence I never pay interest lol.

Really, I'm surprised to see the "not wanting a card for just one store" comments. Don't most larger traditional online stores (i.e. Amazon) not accept Paypal? Maybe I just haven't noticed but I didn't think the majority did. But I get everyone has different perspectives; I resented having to create a PP account just to deal with some businesses the same way some of you may resent this Volks decision.

It's true that stores like Amazon don't accept Paypal as well but at least they also have a debit option which takes the money from the bank account. Here in Germany you can also pay beforehand via bank transfer in most online stores. (That's of no use if you buy something overseas, ofc xD) I don't know any online stores overseas who accept credit cards as a payment method only, too. A credit card might be a super common thing in America or so but not everywhere.

Same I'd avoid using debit of you're doing a large foreign transaction as your using cash as payment rather credit. There's a higher danger if you're not careful as each bank has different policy for fraudulent transactions. Hell I wouldn't even do it from volksusa. I use a credit card for all my transactions, both for online and off as I just pay it off every month.

I did have issues with my bank issued credit card last time a made a payment for Anastasia. I had to get my sibling to make the purchase for me, thus causing me to change my credit card I spend on normally. With volks removing PayPal as a form of payment will be a bit annoying but for me personally it will have little significance, just a slightly longer checkout.

Yikes, I'm going to have to put my order into Volks sooner rather than later then.

This is pretty disappointing to me; I don't have a credit card, just a debit card, and I don't really want to start using it for large value oversea transactions.

I'm no fan of Paypal, but it certainly makes things easier.

Thanks for the insight. I was vaguely aware it was different outside the US for cards, but I wasn't thinking about that when I made my post so yeah that makes a lot more sense. Here it seems like it would be pretty difficult not to have a credit card in general; I know there was a time when I also considered that.

Hopefully, this will be useful to someone even if it's just for informational purposes.

I live in the U.S. and I once placed an order from Volks Japan. I tried using a credit card for payment and it was rejected. I was nowhere near hitting the limit on my card and the only reason I could think of for the rejection was my card not having the "3D secure" feature or its equivalent to satisfy Japanese banking rules. Since there was no way my card would work at all under such cirbleepstances, I went to the alternative: Paypal. That worked without a hassle.

If I absolutely want to place another order from Volks Japan in future, not having Paypal as an option is going to hurt. I personally haven't run into this problem yet because outside of the one order I mentioned, I have the option of ordering from Volks USA. (Volks USA is local to me so packages have arrived within 1 to 3 days.)

I haven't applied for another credit card with the specific security features which satisfy Japanese banking rules. For the most part, I haven't had too much trouble buying from Japanese online retailers who are willing to ship overseas. Not all Japanese online retailers have required me to have "3D secure" enabled on a credit card and most retailers I deal with accept Paypal. I haven't had much of an incentive nor have been forced to apply for such a card. If Paypal is no longer an option for payment from the places I buy from, well, then that would either force me to get a card with the "3D secure" feature or I start saving money.

Now that I've said all that, Cosmic Forces will lay down the hammer on my skull and make Volks Japan exclusive "gotta have them" items I will have an overwhelming desire to buy.

That, and my application for a card with the "3D secure" feature enabled will be rejected.

How can you tell if a card has 3D secure or not? The only time I had a credit card reject for Volks Int it was the credit card itself rejecting the large overseas purchase even though I told them about it. I had to call them again while the transaction was actually happening so they could release it.

Are they adding 3D Secure? I've never been prompted for verification when placing credit card orders through Volks.

Based on my own experiences, you can't. I've never seen this as a touted feature for any card. If you don't know whether your card has this feature, then it's best to assume you don't have it. The only way to find out for sure is to call your credit card company.

I don't know if Volks Japan specifically added this. I want to emphasize my post above is me speculating why my card was rejected. I don't know if that was the actual reason for the rejection.

At around the time I placed my order with Volks Japan, the 3D secure thing prevented me from paying by credit card at a different Japanese online retailer. Due to that experience, I assumed Volks Japan implemented a similar measure on its own web site.

The OP said something about Nico verification too, which is why I asked. Mandarake and Buyee have both added 3D Secure, but you can still use PayPal.

I had zero issues using my card for Luka through the credit card option, and I know it doesn’t have 3D Secure.

3D Secure is a good idea, but unless it’s mandated for all cards it’s not viable.
