What temperature can a DD head resist?

Recommended Posts

Hello!

What temperature can the vinyl resist before burning/melting/changing shape?

I’d like to make some mods on a DD head, including the addition of clay-made parts that need to be cooked in the oven at 130 degrees (Celsius) for around 10 minutes.

Since I cannot bake them separately (i dont like the idea of glueing the parts after), will the heads be damaged in the oven?

Thank you

Sister Kyoya is right. The whole head went into the oven with the ears on for 10 minutes at 275ºF (135ºC) because the polymer clay changes shape too easily and would likely not fit back on the DD head. It was a risk to "bake" the head but it came out looking just as it did going in. I am surprised how durable the vinyl is. I remembered a post about the heat gun Billy used to loosen some arm joints on his girls. Someone said too much heat would melt the vinyl. Heat guns emit air at 100°C - 550°C (200-1000°F). So 135ºC seemed like the lower range of a heat gun.

Thank you, masahiiro. I will try Haruhi on a MDD body when the parts for MDDIII come to Volks USA. If you are wondering where the MDD body I had went to, Billy has two MDD girls now.

Thank you for the link, but they suggest using magnets or glue anyway, while I wanted it to be a permanent addition to the head

I understand, but the point of the link was to show that someone in the past has put the whole head in the oven to bake and it didn't melt at 275°F for 10 minutes.

Of course, this was an older head with the harder vinyl, so you may want to experiment with a headcap or hands first or something.

Have you considered doing the mods with an air-dry clay, like Apoxie Sculpt or paperclay?

The method you're considering has a lot of risk attached - ovens often don't heat at the temperature they say they do and don't heat evenly, so the prior mention of someone doing that without damage might not work for you, and I'm guessing that vinyl gives off some pretty gross gases when heated all the way through/for a long time.

Doing your mods with a tried-and-true method (there's lots of information for air-dry clay additions on DoA and other websites) is the one sure method to avoid damage, even if it's a bit more difficult to colour-match than polymer clay.

The post above this signature was probably TLDR, and I am very sorry.
