Eye Gapping?

Recommended Posts

Hello~

I have an issue on all my dolls where there's a gap between the eyes, and I'm not sure if there's a fix. I tried sanding the eye holes down on the inside of a spare head to try and get them as flat as possible, and it only helped somewhat. I've tried both low dome and high dome eyes and the issue persists. I see some people can get their eyes to be flush against the eye holes without a gap, but I can't get it to work no matter what. Is there a fix?

Some heads seem better at the eyes fitting flush in my experience, but there's a different, related issue you might be dealing with.

I'm not sure about your other dolls, but on the DDH-06, if you're using Volks 24mm eyes (and probably others) the two eye bases hit each other inside the head where they can't fit into the eye sockets the way they should. You can fix this by trimming the base on the one side for each eye.

My own experience is that in a DDH-07, there's that same issue with 24mm but otherwise they fit fairly flush and 22mm fit very flush. In another limited head I've tried there just is a gap no matter what because of the way the inside of the eye holes is beveled.

I usually just push very hard, and fill the gaps with eye putty

Do you paint the putty at all to match the color of the skin?

I always use 22mm eyes and they still don't fit. I mostly have the issue with my DDH01 and DDH10. If I used a smaller eye size they would have a shocked expression so I don't think the eyes are too big... They don't touch ends on the inside either, they just don't fit flush against the eye holes for some reason. It looks fine from the front, but it's obvious from the sides.

If you're using 22mm the issue I mentioned isn't what is happening.

Volks sells a little tool intended for their resin SDs:

http://volksusastore.com/webstores/dollfie/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=317

I don't know if that works well on vinyl though. If it does, it should solve your issue.

Volks eye putty is skin-colored if you want to try the gap-filling technique. In my attempts to use it, I didn't find it to stick very well though so it might work better to also use the usual stuff to actually hold the eyes in place.

Volks used 20mm on DD Rena (01 head). There isn't much white on them on the official photos so I'm not sure about the shocked expression. Maybe you can try resin eyes with 20mm Base but larger than usual pupil?

I may try that tool at some point. I think I'll stick with silicone ear plugs and try to paint them and see if that makes a difference. Don't want the eyes falling out from the Volks putty.

Rena is an unmodded DDH01 so she has smaller eye holes. I have a modded DDH01, so 20mm eyes are too small for her.

I have a modded DDH01

That may be the main problem. If the eyes have been enlarged, then the usual beveled ledge (I don't know what to call it) that's inside the head that the eyes normally fit flush against is likely gone or modified. If it's still there, it would've been designed for the radius of 20mm as well.

I can probably fix that on my next head... The first one I did was my first modding attempt and so I messed up quite a bit. I have a new doll coming Friday to replace the old head. My DDH10 isn't modded though, so I don't understand why the eyes don't fit properly. She uses Volks eyes too.

One other thing to check in the DDH-10 is that there isn't something else interfering with the eyes sitting as flush as possible. I have one head where there's a bump in the vinyl inside the head, on the temple side just a little beyond where Volks makes that beveled ledge the eyes fit into. On this head that bump pushes the eye over where it can't seat properly. That's the head where they just don't fit really closely in either side, but this bump is causing it to be much worse on the one side.

I don't have a 10 head so I don't know how well eyes do or don't fit in it typically.

I just checked inside and there doesn't seem to be anything unusual that would be making them not sit properly. Is it maybe just a thing with all DDs?

She has this gap here that you can see when you tilt her head up(it looks bigger in person). I'm holding the eye as close as I can with my hand so that it's not an issue with the putty/ear plugs blocking the way. There's a little bit of a gap on the bottom lid too, but it's not as bad.

I don't think that amount of gap is uncommon. I have DDH-07, a Neris head and Sheryl (who I haven't really unboxed yet). In the DDH-07, fit with 22mm eyes is pretty flush, but in Neris there's a gap like what you show, on all sides, not just the top. That's the head with the little bump I mentioned as well, but that only affects one side.

Oh I see, that makes sense. I ordered that tool that you mentioned earlier and I'm gonna try using that with a bit of paint thinner to melt the plastic a bit. I found a tutorial on a Japanese blog where someone did that to make their eyes fit better in a modded DDH01.

I'm interested to see your results, also, would you link that tutorial?

Thinner may damage your faceup so be prepared for that.
