You play with dolls?

I agree with you. When i had barbies i would tie them up, pretend that ken was a serial killer, i was a weird kid when it came to my dolls.

 

Sounds interesting. Did you have some detective or police or superhero trying to stop serial killer? Or find out who is it?

I was close lol. It's been a long time for me and the F7 and F9 were the ones I remembered. I seem to recall you can tell them apart by the appearance of the side grilles or something.

 

OT: My interest in model railroading extended to an interest in real trains as well, as I know it does for many. I lived in a small town that had a Sante Fe depot and a very small switching yard--I think, hard to remember the details after so long and everything is long gone now. Back in the 1970s I used to go there and take photos of whatever I found. There'd often be a few cars or a locomotive or two sitting there. Quite often I got to see the rather unique CF7 locomotives:

If I recall they had a couple of different paint schemes for them but I know I saw ones with the "war bonnet" paint scheme like the pictures there. Some of them may have gotten the SPSF paint scheme but I don't think I ever saw any of those. I'll have to dig around I probably still have Kodachrome/Ektachrome slides of some of the stuff from back then.

 

Wow, I never knew about those locomotives. How interesting. And they started out in my favorite SF scheme, the yellow bonnet. Someday I'll get some O gauge locomotives in yellow bonnet, but it'll be a while yet, still need to get a job and finish the layout.

This thread may be dead, I'm not sure, but joining on the train (heh) to say I love playing with my doll. I currently don't own a DD but an Obitsu and I take her with me almost everywhere (she's small) I plan on taking out my DD too. I love being able to have a doll just hanging out with me or dressing them up. Currently, she's my sewing partner!

Well welcome, I also have obitsu but hybrid with dollfie dream 06 head.

I definitely play with my dolls, but not in the sense like when I was a kid.

 

I take them off the shelf, dress them up, create stories for them in my head, and in general have fun. My favorite part is having something so pretty to dress up and create different styles with. I think about what kind of image and personality I want them to portray, give them names, a backstory, etc. Sometimes I use them as models for my drawings. I'm one of those people who uses them for creative outlets as well as something cute and fun to dress up (I've always loved dress-up games and have a series called Styling Star (Girls Mode in Japan) on my Nintendo DS).

 

I think I take mine off the shelf once a day to at least pose them around and admire them. I would like to spend more time doing things with them, but they're confined to the bedroom where the cats aren't allowed. :/ And sadly, I have an apartment with cats. So. They don't get out as much as I'd like them to.

I'm in the minority among the replies in this thread—I don't really "play" with my dolls.

 

That's not to say that I keep them completely untouched and leave them on display like museum pieces, but the things I like about dolls as an adult are different from the things I liked about dolls as a child. I enjoy changing their clothes and wigs, but when I've settled on something I like seeing them wearing that particular combination for a while. I have my dolls on stands in a display area, and most days I don't interact meaningfully with them. In some ways, they're more like decor in my home—which I like. Having them nicely set up in a place where they're background items in my daily life makes me happy. Most of my "play" with dolls is now related to taking pictures of them, which sometimes I think about in terms of creating stories, but often I just stick to posing and showcasing outfits. For some I've created backstories, but they're pretty loose sketches rather than concrete "characters", without the intricacies I've observed from other doll hobbyists.

 

What I enjoy most about dolls is interacting with other people in the hobby. I like getting together to see what other people have done with their dolls, especially as an opportunity to see dolls in real life that don't fit with my general purchase preferences. I also like hearing other people talk about why they chose particular dolls to purchase or why they came up with elements of a doll's appearance or background.

 

In fact, one of the things I really like about owning these types of dolls is how many options there are! I think that however we choose to enjoy them, hobbies don't really have much in the way of "right/wrong" way to participate. It's nice to see so much creativity! ♥

I play with my dolls by sewing them lots of clothes. I love designing, drafting, and sewing a lot, and dolls are a fun challenge because of their size. I can also make them things I wouldn't want to wear myself, so it's an excuse to explore new fashion, too.

Playing with dolls for me means to change their clothes, customize them and take photos. I haven't played with them since a long time... they've been in a store box this year, it's been a rough year but I'm ready to take them out again. I will "play" with them again. To reward myself (for taking them out) I recently got a new DD and made a few changes in my crew. The new DD is a girl too (I only had boys before, it's so refreshing to have girls). Her name is Serendipity (I call her Sere) and one of my boys changed to a girl, her name is Euphoria (I call her Phoria). Can't wait to play with them.

I'm too paranoid to even hold them in my hands for a long time.

But maybe one day...

Back when Figure(dot)fm was active/relevant, my first kiddo, Tana actually had her own account there...... 

 

That was a riot, to say the least...... wish it was still around.... (*sigh* wish in one hand..............)

 

I still “ interact” with them, both Tana and Merri have “somewhat” active Twitter accounts, and I do let them post up on things that are going on at the Belfry...

Don’t be afraid to actually “play” with your Kiddos, you’re doing yourself, AND them an injustice by just placing them on a shelf for “eye candy”.... 

Make stories, dress them up, pose ‘em and do silly things. Take pics and post them here and on other sites.

You’d be surprised at how cathartic it can be....

Well spoken my friend, well spoken.  I wholeheartedly agree!  These girls thrive on being played with and dressed up and photographed.  The more fun you have with them, the more fun THEY have.  It's a two way street.

I never play with my dolls.

 

These dolls are too expensive to risk leaving the shelter of their protected shelf.

 

There are all sorts of dangers lurking around the house.

 

Appliances pose real hazards for dolls.

 

Not to mention what could happen if plumbing was involved.

 

Playtime is totally out of the question.

 

And don’t get me started about the dangers of the outside world.

 

There is dirty moist organic matter,

 

Joint clogging gritty sand,

 

Skin damaging heat,

 

And extreme winter cold.

 

My dolls stay inside on their shelf. I just wouldn’t risk it.

I have resin right now and I don't play with them much. I'm so afraid of breaking them. I dropped a head by accident once and it broke. I was devastated.. So they're more for display. I come from collecting anime figures and I see them as a huge step up being able to customize them and make them to my vision and 'perfect' to me. I just really like to display them and stare at them. I even walk to them and look at them for awhile. It makes me happy for some reason. 

I'm getting my first vinyl soon and I definitely have plans to play with them a lot. I've heard they're lighter to move around and I won't be as afraid to break them. I probably wont dread changing their clothes like I do with resin.
 

Mine are either packed away in their boxes or out being played with, since I don't have anywhere good to display them right now. I like to dress them, pose and handle them, make up their backstories in my head. I have a couple of ongoing photostories with resin dolls (long left without updates, argh) and another two in mind for my vinyl girls but my house is chaotic with renovations at the moment and too difficult to set up scenes in.

To be honest, my relationship with my dolls hasn't changed that much since I was a kid - I use them for storytelling, one way or another. The dolls have just got a whole lot more expensive.

Yes, I definitely play with them!

I make outfits for them, I undress and redress them regularly, pose them, take them around -at least, the little ones :), take pictures that probably is my favorite thing though! I've learned so much about photography since I've started collecting dolls and taking photos of them!

I don't know if this counts as "playing" but what I do is this: 

Since I started to write, sometimes I imagine sudden short crazy stories. So recently i thought: what would happen if I imagine a dollfie story? and that's what i did. 

Now I take Arabelle with me to some places and start to imagine she's writing a story about her adventures. Is this weird? dk and dc, i just have a lot of fun doing it.

Yes of course. Just by owning one and doing things with it counts as play unless you just leave them on display or nrfb I suppose.

My daughter and I currently have 3 Dollfies, and yes we definitely play with them.

I'm reminded of that clip from Remember the Titans every time I think of how I "play" with my dolls. I don't "play" the way children do, but instead like to dress my dolls in outfits, wigs, and accessories, and take pictures. Not for anyone else, but for myself. I get enjoyment out of it. Most of my dolls are packed away, except a small growing collection of dollfie dreams and dollfie dream hybrids. Because my tastes in dolls have changed. I used to collect the photo realistic bjd resin kind, but now prefer anime kinds like smartdoll, dollfie dream, azone, and similar. They bring me joy and happiness just looking at them, so they are on a mantle in the living room. My boyfriend has gotten used to them and our cat for the most part leaves them alone - but sometimes I get down on the floor to dress them / photo them, and the cat likes to come over to inspect them and rub against them. I would like to start taking my dolls outdoors more and/or work on a DDP sized diorama. Those would be my next projects. I also want to start doing my own faceups, and sewing, and possibly wig making.  Which is another way we can "play" with our dolls.

I do play with my dolls. I wish I had more time and space to do so, but my current living arrangements and lifestyle is going through changes and I have to make time and room to do so. My pictures aren't turning out as well as I would hope but I am giving it a try. 

Usually I like to dress up my dolls, take pictures and make up photo stories. I also like to just hold my dolls while I read or craft or game or something, just some time with each one. I do consider it playing with my dolls just not the same type of play a child would do.

I totally consider myself playing with dolls (even though painting dolls is my main profession now).
When I change them, stylize them, take pictures... Even though they're precious collectibles and a form of art/design, they're clearly toys.

I don't feel there's anything dismissive about that, I love to play in a general way (video games for example) and playing with physical items to take pretty pictures or create nice character is totally a hobby in itself, beside the collection. ^_^

I have done a number of activities with my dolls but do they count as "playing?"
