Jewellery materials

Hi all! I read (or heard) somewhere that the fake metals used by Volks and other creators has the potential to leave stain marks on vinyl.

I'm thinking about making some jewellery for my girls and want to choose something readily available that would be vinyl-safe! Does anyone know if stainless steel, real sterling silver plating, or real gold plating would leave any stain marks or otherwise have a poor reaction with vinyl?

Also, if I use something other than those metals, ie some unknown silver or gold tone metal, does it help at all to coat the piece in clear nail polish or acrylic, or would that also cause a bad reaction with vinyl?

Thanks for any help!

Can we all collectively stop using nail polish for non nail painting purposes please

Anyway, not sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but I've used copper and silver plated stuff from Michaels craft store with no problems. My girl has been wearing her necklace for literally years now, and has never been stained

My go-to test is "if it doesn't turn MY skin green, it's usually doll-safe". Its been holding pretty true in my experiences so far (with an outlier being Primark rings, that haven't turned anything colors, but oooh boy did they make my skin freak out on contact in general... Hasn't stained my girl's arms at all, so still DD safe!)

Clear nail polish can be pretty useful outside of painting nails, though.

Would there be a problem using clear acrylic paint or something similar to seal metallic items so they don't stain DDs? It's easy enough to find chains of good metals, but cute charms are often made of unknown materials and I'd rather seal it than take my chances.

As a general rule: Never use nail polish on your dolls, or anything that will be touching your dolls. The chemicals can react badly and can cause the vinyl to stain, warp, or even melt.

Clear acrylic sealant is fine.

I've had no issue with copper, silver, or gold. Bronze and brass can cause discoloration.
