DIY Eyes/Wigs?

Recommended Posts

LordNoir

Hey all,

I'm trying to remember a website that I know was linked somewhere here on the forums( can't recall where) it was a site that sold DIY acrylic eye kits and DIY wigs/extensions as well. I swear, we need to have a sticky thread to list sites to buy not only DIY stuff, but other basic things like generally good clothing, animetic eyes and wigs for the DD/MDD/DDdy/DDS bodies. XD

Volks themselves sells wig extensions. Good luck for the wig. What we decided to do at my house for a custom doll project we're working on is buying a straight really long wig. That way we can cut and style it the way we want to.

Are you ready to rock? ^_^

I was too curious about PupaPa DIY eyes kit too... And I have ordered some ><

You can find the items to make a custom wig almost everywhere (PupaPa, Leeke, Luts) but I can give you a feedback about them! I will look for more info!

PupaPa also sells 9" blank cloth caps that are used inside wigs, so you could make your own hair wefts and sew them to the cap if you wanted to make a wig completely from scratch.

If you are working with hair extentions, here's a tutorial on how to make no-sew hair wefts. Once you have the wefts, you'd have to sew them to the wig itself though.

Yup, Pupapa's D.eye.Ys are probably the easiest to acquire custom eye bases. I've made several pairs with them--Agatha's current eyes, the green, blue, and turquoise ones I stuck in Nanoha when I first got her, and most recently a custom pair for Nanoha in blue. (Hope to get pictures of them sometime this week; it was more a fight to get their color right than the others, but I love how they turned out.)

Personally, I'd recommend printing your eyes on acetate (overhead transparency) and then adding either pearlescent paint to the back or pearl-ex powder to the front. With all prints and Pupapa bases, you'll have to glue the print onto the lens and let it dry completely before sticking it in, because otherwise you get this weird silver reflection from certain angles. You could also paint directly on the lens, details first and most prominent color last, if you so desired.

I've only passingly looked into wigs, so hadn't seen the Pupapa cloth caps myself, but I have run into a couple ways to make wefts. In addition to the Katy Blair caulking method, there's this one on sewing machine:

and this on a beading loom: http://lakefront.iwarp.com/abjd/Basic_Wefting.html Alternatively, there's lace wigs, which involves looping individual plugs into a fine mesh:
This is tedious though so often this technique is only used for a portion of a wig such as the hairline and/or places where it might get parted.

Good idea.

I would just need a lesson or two in styling.

If you choose to go a similar route to DJStarstryker you will want to know that Volks is discontinuing their W-92D Super Long wig line. That style is the only type they have that is both long and straight (it is down to the DD girls' calves); their other wigs all have curls or waves put in them that you might have to take out, and they are much shorter than the 92D. Just depends on the style you want.

Volks USA still had some 92D in a few colors last I checked, but on the page it says that it's limited to stock on hand. If they have a color that you like, you might want to ask them about it!

I've used Pupapa materials to make my own eyes and wig. The wig was a bit of a hassle to figure out, and the material costs are similar to a new made-in-China wig. Unless you need a really special color blend it's probably better to just buy one and restyle as needed.

Thank you very much Poofiemus! Now I really love you!

My mother used to help my grandmother to make human wigs using this method since she was a child. In the last ten years I am restoring all the equipments they used for this, but none of them remembered how to do the wefting. Based on this, finally I will learn one lost tradition of my family!

Ok I'm late to the party here, but I wanted to suggest using prewefted wig hair made for humans. You'll get a lot more hair for your buck compared to stuff made for doll wigs, and very likely, better quality too!

I highly recommend Arda Wigs wefts; the quality, color selection, and price are all fantastic. Amphigory also has wefts, and I think cosplay.com's shop has rolled out wefts by now. (I would post links, but I'm posting this from my 3DS!

Anyway making your own wefts is not always the cheapest (and certainly not the easiest!) way to go. Trust me on that one XD
