It's not even out yet (it comes out tomorrow). Usually its out on Monday, except for when Monday is a public holiday like today. I'm personally not holding my breath on any new DDs though, but who knows. I just want to be safe lol. I know there are two new SDs, but I'm not sure yet if they are exclusive to the VIP hotel event or whether they will also be at Dolpa and people going to the hotel event just get a better chance at them.

I'm not really sure why, but since I joined this hobby in 2016, there have not been DDs at March Dolpa...which could just be a coincidence (as there have been DDs there -before- I joined the hobby, quite a few actually), or an actual effort to make it more SD-focussed since its the Kyoto one...?

There's also been zero teasers like there usually is...but then again maybe anything goes as far as anniversary stuff is concerned. I'm still curious about whats in this issue.

Oh that's why, a holiday. I just looked back at old threads here and saw some scans were usually available around like 2AM Monday (my time, I know it's very different for you in Australia). Given I saw the release date as Tuesday I thought that didn't seem right that it could work that way this time.

 

I know last year's February edition had no DD announcements. But we didn't get rereleases in the last issue unlike the previous time, and assuming they actually want to release those during the anniversary year I was hoping they'd start.

 

Either way, I'm hoping but expecting disappointment. DDS is the only category where I think there's a chance for what I want being rereleased, and given how the voting was done it's also very possible that is combined with DDdy making it less likely. On DD I'm sure it'll more likely be something currently expensive like Saber Lily rather than anything I hope for.

 

The only hint to what's in the magazine that I've seen is the link I posted in the OP has a "topics" section.

 

Last night was Wonder Festival and that was a big disappointment for me this time too, though it's gotten increasingly that way lately. I was hoping at least for a new Max Factory Project Diva F Miku but there wasn't one. So I'm just pissy...

Well I heard that supposedly Volks SD Luna and Volks SD Lieselotte are releasing in March. They must be apart of the Best of the Best polling. (Also wow Lies makes it in AGAIN. This is like what her fourth release? Damn gurl)

 

So fingers crossed the DD coming out is in the same situation (and maybe that we get two!).

One interesting announcement from the issue I saw on instagram and twitter is that the names for most Volks skin colours are changing, for both DD and SD.

For DD, white and semi-white are staying the same, but 'normal' is now 'flesh', and 'kasshoku(brown)' is now 'tan'. Both are katakana english words. I'm a bit puzzled by it. For SD, 'normal' became 'fair'....so I have no idea why DD got 'flesh'. Clearly the purpose was to move away from the unfortunate connotations of calling one skin tone 'normal', but that implication still kinda stays there when you call it 'flesh'. (I believe crayola, or some other pencil company, had a similar debacle.)...although to a lesser extent I guess. It's better than 'normal' but its kinda...awkward sounding? (mostly because when I think of the word 'flesh' I actually think of meat...)

It doesn't help that 'fresh' and 'flesh' are pronounced and spelled the same way in katakana, and it seems like a lot of JP fans are assuming that it says 'fresh' because 'fresh' is already a loan word with its own meaning (like new, bright, young - hence the 'fresh suit', it's referring to a brand new recruit) but would likely be less familiar with it as a word referring to skin.

 

anyway, apparently the packaging will eventually change to reflect the new names - FL and TN are the new abbreviations. As for how long it takes people used to saying NS to change, who can say.

So those "Pink House" outfits shown on the magazine cover are 50,000 yen each. And the hats are part of those outfit sets so no hats for me after all.

i knew Pink House were a Big Brand and all and that any collab with them would be super duper pricey but dayum. I'm glad I'm not interested in them.

Not much DD stuff at all according to DD twitterspheres reactions to the new issue which is how previous February Volks Newses have been so doesn't surprise me much. Although I did see a lot of people being all 'no sakura miku info :c' because I had also been wondering if they'd get her out of the way at Kyoto Dolpa so they could focus on rereleases from the first Tokyo Dolpa onwards (late April this year), but now I don't know at all. I guess they could still release her together with one or two rerelease dolls - I just think it would be odd to not release her in spring. If she does come out in April, they'll be able to make the announcement for her around the time the cherry blossoms are probably blooming.

That's interesting about the change in skin tone names. I've never been bothered by the term "normal skin" because I've just thought that they need to call the skin tones something to differentiate them from each other and "normal" seems to come into mind to non-native English speakers when they want a name for their standard skin tone colour. From what I've read about the "normal skin" debate around social media, there are always people who seem to find something to complain about no matter what you call the skin tones, so... *shrug* Honestly I'm more inclined to care about the functionality of joints and facial features rather than what a doll's skin tone is called. I do this hobby for fun & relaxation and I don't want to mix politics into it. Not that I'm saying I'm against moving away from calling it "normal skin" - that's good and all - but for me it wouldn't really matter even if they didn't.

 

The choice to use "Flesh" doesn't really surprise me because I also collect Azone's dolls and they use that term. As an example, a photo by Hobby Search of a picconeemo body's packaging with a sticker reading "肌色 (hadairo) flesh": here. But if Volks uses katakana instead of kanji for "flesh", then I agree with you Torino - it's kinda strange and undoubtedly confusing for their Japanese customers. o_ó Also, the fact that the SD and DD skin tone names aren't corresponding is a bit strange. I don't know if they want to emphasise the differences between the two lines of dolls or... ? At the same time it seems like an odd timing because they've been going towards a direction where the DD and SD lines have kind of been fusing together more - with the release of 2B and 9S and the Dollfie Icon line that's still in development.

 

Now that I think about it, I wonder if the release of Dollfie Icon line is getting closer... since the prototype dolls that were shown had new skin tones (I remember seeing pink and gray at least)? So they could be renaming the older skin tones because they're adding new colours to the lineup? Hmm... I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Not my style either fortunately. They come with shoes and the hats, but that's still a very high price. I feel now like I shouldn't have been complaining about the price of the Snow Miku oufit.

I knew because of last year that maybe no DD releases for this issue, but it seems a bit odd given there wasn't a rerelease in December either unlike the last time. Since I'd assume all the official rereleases (i.e. I mean the ones that are called "The Best of the Bests" as opposed to others that they may do later) are to come out this year and they're getting a start this late, that makes me more concerned there will only be three DD rereleases, one for each of the voting categories, in other words, a DD, a DDS or DDdy, and a MDD or DDP. There probably wasn't going to be a DDP in any case since there's only two and rereleasing one of the pair would be weird, and they aren't expensive aftermarket anyway. But I was hoping for a DDS and DDdy so those didn't have to compete with each other, since what I want most are rereleases of DDS (Miki or Ranko) and with DDdy in the mix, Sasara may well win out given the aftermarket on both versions of her.

 

Mainly, I'm just irritated I have to wait even longer to find out what's happening so I still can't make any decisions on what to buy or not buy aftermarket.

 

Maybe Sakura Miku will be a surprise instant release like Yuriko Nanao was. In some sense, she should be an easy doll for Volks to manufacture in a hurry. She'll have the same head as the other Mikus I'm sure, and just a pink version of the same wig, and even the outfit is mostly just a different colored version of what they've already made. Her faceup will be in different colors, and perhaps they'll change it a bit as they did with Snow Miku, but I'm sure she won't be hugely different.

The denim dress is pretty cute and I like it better than the old ones. I'd used that ボークスニュース hashtag to search; for some reason even me looking at your posted tweet I click on that, and I don't get that tweet or much of anything except the Volks ones in my search results. I have no idea why.

Looks like #17. I didn't vote in that round at all as Pink Label doesn't really have things in styles I prefer.

I know I'm in the minority, but I love the Pink House collaboration outfits. I've been a fan of that brand for years. I wish they hadn't been released so close to Mars/Mercury so I could have budgeted differently. Maybe someday they'll come my way secondhand.

The Pink House sets are cute, but $500 seems a bit steep when you can buy a doll for that. But I love the moon-and-cloud print yukata sets shown on the same page!

I voted for them a couple of times, 'cause I like the mori girl look. I'm surprised they won, though. I didn't think they'd be that popular? Even I voted for other sets way more than this one. The new flower prints are cute, just the flowered dresses on their own would be adorable too.

So far the other rereleases (this issue also includes the penguin kigurumi I swear only came out last year?) have been stuff that came out after I joined the hobby. I still consider myself new so anything released in that period seems weirdly recent to me - I was much more hoping to see rereleases of old stuff that sold out years before I joined. But if that’s what people were voting for, that’s that I guess. -shrug-

 

I forgot about Azone using 肌/flesh! I need to add that while I don’t think flesh is a -bad- term and it’s vastly preferable to normal for me (which is...a really loaded loan word in Japan as it is, and is frequently associated with unintentional negative connotations like people using it to mean ‘straight’..) it happens to be one of those words that sounds awkward to me, like the word ‘moist’ for a lot of people lol. It’s not a big deal and I’m mostly just amused at the idea of people talking about flesh heads and flesh parts.

It's true that it's nice to get old outfits that are probably pretty unavailable even aftermarket.

 

I don't know if this hurt voting for such in general, but I mostly didn't vote for anything that Volks doesn't still have a page up for, which is pretty much anything before 2011 and some that year, because I had no way to know if such outfits are even sized for DD and not just SD, so voting for something I didn't know if I could even use didn't make sense to me.

Are these actually popular? Volks releases so many of them and related like the fluffy animal head things. I fully get that people have different tastes but my eyes just kind of gloss over when I see these; I don't find them the least bit cute or whatever they are supposed to be. I guess that's me but most types of doll clothing that aren't my particular style I still appreciate looking at other peoples' dolls wearing. But even ignoring how I feel about them, it's not something I see user pictures of online very often. But they keep making them, and now a rerelease so I guess they sell.

 

Edit2: I believe the last time Volks did rerelease more than one set of clothing from some of the voting categories so there might be further ones, but so far we've got Designers Collection with the Azurite Blue rereleases, and now LPC Blue and Pink Label.

I want a better photo of that MDD denim outfit. It's looking cute, but then I do have this thing for denim...

Other than the Miku Vampire dress, I'm a bit disappointed. What I've seen so far doesn't really peak my interest.

Hopefully we'll get more scans and pictures!

That Designer's Collection boy outfit would probably look good on my SmartDoll boy Viktor; I only just got him so he hardly has any outfits, and that makes it more tempting.

 

I'm probably more tempted by the penguin kigu than I should be; the thought of sticking either Viktor or Yuuri in it (since they're ice skaters) is pretty funny to me.

 

Other than that (and maybe, at a stretch, the Rimuru figure), this issue seems a bit thin. Eh. Not like Volks won't come up with ways to take my money later in the year.

I just now realised that the penguin kigu rerelease is because of the Dolpa being at the aquarium, and possibly not because it got a lot of votes in the polls.

 

anyway I was blabbin bout this on Discord but the actual most exciting part of this entire issue for me is that they are using a DD boy to model one of the outfits - with a 14 head.

I don't think they've ever used a boy to model -anything- except for Len modelling the clothes made for him. Furthermore, 14 is a head only available through Dream Choice. Maybe I'm just looking way too much into it, but I really want to believe this could be a sign that boys could finally come to Dream Choice, even if the bodies themselves don't become standard.

Thanks for that page, because of the qipao. I've wanted one but not found one I really liked before.

 

Also I see it's for SS/S busts only (and DDB) so it's perfect for Miku.
