HazelMaze Posted February 15, 2019 I've been scouring the internet, staring at all the vinyl I can handle. I've noticed that the general consensus is that MDD bodies are frustrating. I'm interested in hearing everyone's thoughts, and perhaps more reasons as to WHY MDD's are so frikkin adorable but also sort of a headache, and even how to mitigate some of the trouble. Poofiemus Posted February 15, 2019 So, the very first MDD body was. . . not good. It was floppy and weak. The next MDD body, weirdly called the MDDIII, is definitely an improvement. It's not as firm as the concurrent DDIII bodies, but it holds a pose really well and is cute as a button. I haven't heard about the new MDDF3 specifically yet, but from the sound of it the F3 frame in general is sturdy but takes more fine tuning to get the right stiffness than the MDDIII. Short answer, there's more than one version of the MDD body, and not all of them were stellar. If you're seeing a poor review of the MDD body, check the date of the post--if it's before about 2013 or so, it's probably the sad, old body they're talking about. (Also be sure to ask if you're looking to buy one secondhand.) In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
HazelMaze Posted February 16, 2019 Sometimes taking dolls makes me feel like I'm taking car parts! I do find it odd that they skipped over into MDDIII myself, maybe to match up with the then-produced line? I appreciate your post, it was quite informative! I'm curious how your find the MDD's in scale. I've seen plenty of comparisons, but I can never quite tell whether or not the proportions sit right with me! baldylox Posted February 16, 2019 I do find it odd that they skipped over into MDDIII myself, maybe to match up with the then-produced line? The reason they named it MDD3 and skipped over the 2 was because of how the bodies have been upgraded in the past. Volks started out with the DD1 body which had internal strings like a resin doll but it was made of vinyl. Once they decided to give it an internal skeleton, they named it the DD2. Just after that release, they came out with the first Dynamite and Mini Dollfies bodies. The Dynamites ( DDdy ) were more curvy and had bigger thighs, butts and boobs but used the same internal skeleton. The MDD's were basically smaller versions of the DD2 but made very cute and child like. But when they decided to upgrade the bodies again, they had to not only change the DD2 to the DD3, they figured that since there was only ONE version of the MDD and DDdy til then, they would just name them DDdy3 and MDD3 to keep everything looking the same. So there are actually no DDdy2 or MDD 2 bodies, Volks skipped over that name and went directly to the 3 in order for it to match the DD3 bodies. I appreciate your post, it was quite informative! I'm curious how your find the MDD's in scale. I've seen plenty of comparisons, but I can never quite tell whether or not the proportions sit right with me! It will depend on what look and style you want for your little dolls. If you want a more childlike appearance then the MDD is the way to go. You can put almost any DD head on that body and have it look good. Here's a few examples: This Machii, a modded 01 head. DSC_0867 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr This is Cirno, her head is specific to the MDD body of her character. DSC_0786 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr This is Rena, she is a standard character from Volks, or rather she was until they came out with Liliru. She is also an 01 head. DSC_2009 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr Luna is the DDH10 head. DSC_0744 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr Her sister Lotus is also a DDH10 head but she is on the DDS body. DSC_1791 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr On the left is Torako, she's on the DD3 body with Shapely large bust. Konami is on the SWS MDD3 body and to the right is Winnie, she's also on the DD3 body but with the regular L-bust. And below is Konami by herself. She is an 03 head, the same as the character doll Yukino. DSC_1796 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr You can also make your MDD girls more mature by adding the L-bust to them. I have one like that, her name is Nami. DSC_0791 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr She is the same head as Konami but with closed eyes. Here's a better shot of her L-bust. DSC_0874 by Billy Bennett, on Flickr As you see, you can do lots of different things with the MDD girls, it just depends on what you want them to be and look like. Hopefully this helps you out a little. Billy I gave up counting the girls I own, they keep multiplying and won't stop.
Monty Posted February 16, 2019 (edited) My Tilo has the MDD3 body and I have no complaints. The only ‘issue’ is that I’m often scared to change his hands as they can be hard to remove (I worry the wrist pegs will snap) but if I use a hair dryer to soften things up there’s no issue. The current body ‘f3’ seems to be even more an improvement, not sure about the wrists (which is where I most hope for improvement) as I don’t have one and likely won’t until the next time I go to japan (2020?) and get one there, unless there’s some surprise releases coming up that I can actually afford. (Ie MDD Arle gets rereleased on the f3 body) As others have said the complaints about the MDD body seem to all be referring to the original one which was apparently floppy and prone to breakage, so if you are buying a new one you don’t have to worry. If you’re buying second hand take note of what gen the body is. Edited February 16, 2019 by Guest *twitter*instagram*art*
CrazyDollPerson Posted February 16, 2019 This is informative, I didn't realize the old version was like that. I only have one and she is the newest body version of Liliru and I really love this size and think she is so cute. I haven't had any issues with her body, but I also don't have anything to compare it to other than my Miku DD and my Smartdolls. I want an Arle someday if I can ever find one that isn't a ton of money but knowing that the older bodies can be like that is good to know and makes me rethink getting an older one. Anna-neko Posted February 16, 2019 (edited) Nobody is gonna mention how orig MDD knees were so bad, even Volks themselves would do blog posts informing everyone how to fix it (buy KIPS, take legs apart, add KIPS to knees....) The knees would be So. Bad. that one of local girls gave up trying to fix it and just bought her MDD a lil American Girls branded wheelchairs The breakage tho... oooh man, I still recall the horror of when my orig MDD girl one second was fine, and the next the inside of her torso cracked and the poor girl had to be epoxied back together Edited February 17, 2019 by Guest
Poofiemus Posted February 17, 2019 LOL yeah, the first MDD body was a bit of a mess. XD Seriously though, the MDD3 is great and the MDDF3 likely followed suit. I have an MDD3 with a resin head and adore her, but before I got her her own body, I tried her on a friend's classic/first version MDD body and it was a pile of floppiness and loose limbs. Just ask smart questions if you buy secondhand and you'll be cool. Though speaking of resin heads, those provide a couple of options that are a bit smaller and thus a bit more classically proportioned for MDD. My own girl uses a head from an artist group called Out of Base that sells unfinished kits through Dollce and events like Dollshow; SQ Labs sells on Yahoo Japan and have a number of more petite anime-styled heads that are a really close match for the DD skin tone. If the proportions of a regular DD head bother you badly, or you just want to see what else is out there, it may be worth looking into. In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser. CeliathePikachu Posted February 19, 2019 You mentioned wanting Arle someday then writing about taking the older bodies into consideration. Arle is on a MDD3, so it shouldn't be a problem. Currently at home: Autumn (DD2 DDH-01), Sakura (MDD3 DDH-08), Haku (Mio Akiyama), Mashiro (Mashiro Mito), Kaito (Vocaloid KAITO) Mashiro Mito is my wife and I love her! Thank you for mentioning this! Even if it wasn't for me haha. Arle is on my list and it's good to know her body isn't one of the floppy ones.
