Eye mounting products, which one is best?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what substance is best to mount eyes? I have had resin bjds for years & did well with "sculpty" but, realize it gets oily over time & would not be good mix with vinyl. Let me know your favorites!

My number one choice are silicone putty earplugs! You can find them at some drugstores, and while they're more expensive than a pack of blu-tack, they won't stain or leave a residue. The silicone putty is nice and sticky, but cleans up easily and is re-useable. Oh, and you often get a LOT in a packages, and really only need 1/4 of a "blob" per eye (or half a blob per pair).

Volks also sells a dream fitter, which can make it possible to move the eyes without opening the head. They sell a thing call a dream stick for movement. It has a learning curve, and it won’t really work with larger eyes if they overlap inside the head

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

The other thing about Dream Fitter is that it works with only their own eyes, no? Unless other eyes have a similar underside with a pin like Volks'.

Yes, and the pin would have to be identical.

Thanks for the heads up on those earplugs... I quickly called my husband & he's hunting for them in the drugstore on his way home. Let's hope he finds them.

I was wondering what that gadget was! Volks doesn't really go into detail as to what it is or does on the site. Thanks!

Thanks for the info, I can see me trying to make something work that would be futile... love gadgets but, not to slick with the "how to" parts!

Thanks all!

Part of the ability to move the eyes comes from a backing piece that presses into the pin on the back of the eyes. The width of the backing part is sized for Volks eyes as well. I’m not sure it could really be made to work with other eyes.

Ikataru

I personally have always used white wall mounting tacky/putty that I get from Wal-Mart. They sell it where they have their poster rack...or where it used to be. The stores around here are all different now. I never liked the blue kind since it stains everything it touches.

....I  have heard about people using silicone earplugs and I've been really wanting to try that out.

....I am also glad to see some more info on the Volks eye fitter, I've been really curious about that for my Miku doll since she wears only the eye sets that come with her miku outfits.

Seconding Ikataru with the white wall mounting putty. You can a good amount of UHU Tac (in white) for a decent price.

-

Currently, I use the Volks eye putty out of convenience since I usually add a package of it to order. The texture is like a mixture of UHU Tac and a Kneadable Eraser. Sometimes it doesn't really stick unless you press it down against the inside of the head.

-

While, silicone earplugs work very well, I stopped using them because I hated seeing dust and hand oils accumulate inside of them. They would sometimes turn yellow-ish. Since they were so sticky, it had the tendency to difficult to remove all of the putty out of the head.

Thanks for the info about the "white-tak" because I didn't know where to buy it easily. I have some I got from this Etsy seller with other things I ordered:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/387069240/white-eye-putty-non-staining-10g-smart?ref=shop_home_active_42&crt=1

but he's nearly out and ordering that alone would be expensive from the UK to the US.

I've got the Volks and I try to use it but it never holds for me. It sticks to the eyes but doesn't seem to adhere to the vinyl head at all. I think I've finally got it holding and then days later it comes loose anyway.
