DD photography tips?

Recommended Posts

Rella

I want to try to improve my doll photography. I’ve been wanting to work on some poses. Whenever I look up doll photos they all have cute poses but I don’t know how to do them (I don’t want to risk breaking my doll). I also want to work on the angles and lighting in my photos. Sense I take photos on my phone it’s a little tough to make them look good. I usually put filters over them and change the lighting my editing it but I want to stop editing them all the time. Any photography tips? Thanks! :3

As as posing goes I would suggest the following. Grab a bunch of doll product photos from Volks site, and work on recreating the poses with the nude doll. Grab some promo images of anime characters from the internet, and try those poses too. Try mixing and matching pose elements that you like. Keep in mind that people usually aren't symmetrical in their body posture, and if you make your left side right side posing symmetrical the doll is going to look stiff and unnatural. Ideally you want the posing to look like it's the result fluid body motion.

There are some pretty extensive tips on Photography in the photography section down near the bottom of the forum listing. With photography, or any other art, you have to do it a lot to get good at it so take lots of photos. If you are having issues with elements of your photos use google to see if you can find information on how to correct for those things.

One really good tip that I read here awhile back is make sure the eyes are looking at the camera, and make sure they are well lit.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

For posing, lighting, and framing do the same as you would with real people.  It's just on a smaller scale.  If you can see their eyes, you should generally make sure the camera is focused on the eyes.

For posing, I'm going to second Beyond Time's recommendation.  Just find poses you like in images whether they be of dolls or not, and see how close you can get to replicating them.

Don't worry too much about breaking the doll.  DD's are pretty tough.  Just stay aware while moving joints.  It's always best to move only one joint at a time, at least until you get a feel for how your doll behaves.   A lot of it is just gaining familiarity of what each joint is capable of, and you only learn that by doing.

With regards to movement I do recomend grasping on both sides of the joint you are moving at the joint itself i.e. to reposition the arm at the shoulder use one hand to grasp the chest at the shoulder, and the other arm at the shoulder. In that example if you grasp the doll by the hand in order to reposition the shoulder you are applying a lot more leverage than needed and that will place additional stress on the joint.
