Man waking up today to Danny’s response has been a headache. I’ve had people in my messages telling me, a Jewish person, why I shouldn’t be offended.

That “apology” proves why Danny doesn’t care. All I did was gently point out the issue before I got BANNED. I didn’t throw a fit in his comments, I didn’t insult or attack him. But now he’s acting like I’m some villain. I wish he’d understand the combination of everything is what makes this bad. Using the Japanese excuse for the arm band is void- it’s not used on MILITARY uniforms for characters that eradicating other humans.

I’m so tired guys. I’ve had so many fellow Jewish collectors voice their upset and exhaustion over this. My hobby shouldn’t be a reminder of things I still deal with daily.

That really sucks, I'm sorry. You have every right to your feelings, and anyone who says otherwise can go jump until they find an ounce of empathy in their souls. 😕

Haruhi's armband is actually that perticular shade of red, which obviously spawned some thankfully few fanarts of a certain related theme. Haruhi also had a short lived "Obey" meme, since the series is more or less that she gets her way one way or another, or the world ends (although there is a lot more to it than that, haruhi having certain quirks that make her at least likable in the end, as opposed to her distant cousin Yurippe in Angel beats).

Ahh okay. It seemed orange to me in the clip, but I am weird when it comes to colours. I never watched it.

GremlinBonDD, I am so sorry you are dealing with all this.  Your comment was polite and honestly didn't even make a big deal out of it.  You could have gone into so much more detail justifiably.  I'm so disappointed by all this, this situation was an accident and could have been a great dialogue.  Instead it's just an embarrassment and makes me feel sad for my Smart Dolls that I do have.  I love my dolls, but it's so hard to feel okay sharing them publicly when the creator is this callous to people.

Granted the figure might be a bit more bleached red, but my own mental image has always been red with the band as the volks doll has.

I perfectly remember Haruhi and her red band (like that of all the class leaders).
What I meant was that probably the anime industry now sees a problem in that color as well, to the point of changing the band to orange.

So Anime 1, DC 0

Getting a little pedantic, so apologies for that, but in this case probably the novel publishing industry.

Up to book ten the band is still red, which was back in 2012 (at least the english translated one). But the latest book that came out about a year or two ago the band is now indeed orange on the cover.

Dunno how much it is because of Noizi Itou's views, or the actual publishing house setting guidelines.

No new anime done since book... eight I think?

(yes, I am a haruhi nerd ... so apologies for that)

Another part in this non-apology that kinda stood out to me was this:

Quote

I was in the middle of making an "OK" hand gesture when I was told it would offend folks because it's now considered a racist symbol.

He makes it sound like he's ~*hard at work*~ when at best he told his 3D sculptors to go and make said changes to the hand model; might even have been one of his staff who was sensible enough to inform him about this unfortunate connotation.

no need to apologize for that, it is interesting to read. I never read the books or seen the anime, only seen the hype about it. But I like seeing someone know so much about it :)

I don’t know anything about this stuff but what I do know is all I need to know. He pays his workers a living wage, he makes sure they work under great conditions and he’s otherwise inclusive in ways a lot of doll brands fail at. I don’t think the other things he’s doing is right but I also don’t think that’s enough to label him a bad person considering the first 3 things I mentioned I do think he’s a bit obsessive but the first 3 things I mentioned is literally all I need from a company

He says he treats his workers well. We never hear from the people who work there.

Considering his instagram posts, there is no amount of money anymore that would convince me to work for Danny. I've dealt with bosses where you have to tiptoe around their fee-fees so they don't throw a wobbler, and I'm not risking that again.

How can a brand be inclusive when there are literally. no. guys. Well, not none, but so few and so hard to get and half-assed that they might as well not exist. Also, calling a cocoa prototype "Jim" is just good old-fashioned Disney style racism. (In Dumbo, one of the crows was named Jim behind the scenes.) Yeah, it's likely an accidental racism, but this junk is piling up. Add to that the stress of being a Smart Doll owner, and it's less and less worth it. And you better hope you like dolls with red hair, because Danny sure does (what do you mean you want a different colour wig? Entitled much!)

Soon all of us will be blocked blocked blocked 🤣 because none of us are free of sin!

Edit: place your bets on which dril tweet will come true first! Will we all get blocked, or will Danny shrivel into a corncob? Who knows what excitement the future will bring!

I feel like I'm really missing something here, what's wrong with the name Jim?

Jim Crow laws were extremely racist laws put in place following the American abolition of slavery in order to continue oppressing African American people. Many weren't fully repealed until the Civil Rights movements of the 1950s/60s, though there is also the argument that even though the laws were repealed, many of the practices weren't and continue to this day. It's not that Jim itself is a bad name, but tying it to a crow character or to black people/characters comes with some heavy historical and political baggage and can be seen as a dog whistle.

So... an American-centric thing that a British/Chinese(?) man living in Japan has apparently done? Not to be rude or anything, but this really feels like reaching at straws.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

I'm British and 10 years his junior, and I know about it. He just really needs a sensitivity reader.

I'm not disagreeing with you. It was most likely an unintentional thing. However, the appropriate reaction to being alerted to unintentional racism is "I'm sorry, I didn't realize, it won't happen again" and then you move on. It most certainly is not "you're just too sensitive for being triggered by my accidental invocation of (insert massively traumatic historical thing that we still feel ripples of today here)."

The thing people keep focusing on is the outfit which is not what we’re solely mad at. Yes the armband is a terrible design choice but he is right it’s been used in schools as a sign of leadership

ITS the combination of the armband the arm raise and his genocidal story in the caption that made both Jewish and non Jewish people go “???” And then him blocking a Jewish person for politely telling him that this looks pretty wrong was what got him into looking like this.

Danny seriously needs to hire a social media person or something because it's clear being a frontman just gives him (and his customers) grief.

I just have a hard time seeing an arm reaching to the side as a Nazi salute. I do have a big issue with the references to defeating the entitled, because those are real people, and are really just his critics for the most part. Yes putting it all together into his plastic "army" is certainly ugh. I'd feel better about his business model if he was doing the BDSM thing with his doll products than I do about his anti-entitled crap. XD

--

I feel really strongly that we should never call some a Nazi unless they really are a Nazi, because when it's used that term should really be a strong wake-up call about a person or movement. Danny is insensitive and you can call him the 'The Great Entitled One', or 'The Grand Wabisabi Poobah' if you prefer, but he's not a Nazi, and I don't believe he's going for Nazi imagery. His whole schtick from the beginning of his business is Culture Japan spread out to the world. I'm sure that what he's going for here, but he's face-planting and not taking ownership of his mistakes.

Deferral of blame is a really bad look too, and he doesn't seem to realize or care what that says about him. This is definitely a real world thing and it seems to drive some of his customer policy and bans.
