Obitsu Head Sculpted Custom Question

Recommended Posts

AnjoRaivando

Hello there! I've got the Aki head in for my Clovis, but I'm suddenly unsure how to sculpt the parts I need to attach to him, notably the sheep ears.

I'd like to use Sculpey, but my usual method (putting sculpey on and boiling to cure) seems like it would definitely damage a vinyl head. However, ApoxieSculpt seems much too heavy for such a lightweight material.

Is using magnets my only option, or is there a way to sculpt the ears directly on?

I've never boiled vinyl parts but the melting point of vinyl seems like it would be higher than 212. Google says, "Melting temperatures range from 212°F to 500°F (100°C to 260°C) depending upon manufacture additives to the PVC". You could always, sculpt them in place, remove them, boil/bake them, and then glue them back in place.

Reality Check

I dug out a piece of vinyl from an old 60cm Obitsu thigh. I suspended it in boiling water (rolling boil) for a little over 10 minutes. I was careful to keep the piece from resting against the metal of the pot or touching the metal wire it was suspended from.

The vinyl did not appear to deform or be damaged at all. It came out and was very soft and pliable and sprung back to its original shape after being squeezed.

I don't know how the vinyl will react to the hot Sculpy touching it. Proceed at your own risk.

OH! Thank you so much for your experiment! I don't know why it didn't occur to me to just glue them into place- I feel a bit silly about that. I have a few scrap Barbie heads I might try it on and see what happens.

Thank you so much again!
