When does each skin color was introduced?

Recommended Posts

Sechs

I guess Normal (now, Flesh) was introduced with the brand itself (maybe not, in fact) but what about the other ones:  White, Semi-White and Tan (before, Brown)?

I need the exact date (with source, please) for when each one of them was first introduced regardless of the type of release, and the date when it was first introduced as a standard skin color you could choose when buying standard parts (what parts if that's relevant).
For example, Tan skin color is still not available as standard color so it will only need one date but White was introduced with limited full sets before being available as standard for parts and bodies.

Thanks.

I am pretty sure Semi-White was introduced with Kos-Mos, a limited edition pre-order project release. She was announced around October 2012 and shipped fall 2013. You can read the details here, but after Volks redid their website some of the links on this page got broken.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

Flesh or semi-white was the standard color when the dolls were first introduced in 1997. Over time they released Limited dolls with different skin tones. Then those colors were made available as standard. As for the dates when I dont know.

Actually Dollfie Dream were first released in August 2003.

————

The first dolls were DD Candy and Mirai! The original skintone was called “Normal” but it just recently not renamed to “Flesh”

Afterwards “White” was introduced. I think it was introduced in 2005 or so.

“Tan” was originally a limited color introduced in 2005 as-well, but it looks like it was reformulated for D’COORD releases starting in 2016

“Semi-White” was introduced during the KOS-MOS Pre-Order in 2012.

I wasn't in the hobby right from the beginning and I wasn't following DDs that closely so I can't remember the dates for the standards, but the first appearance of each skin tone is a bit easier to find. You can do it by cross-referencing Volks' own lists of the releases and visiting the doll's pages here.

-Mirai and Candy came out in 2003 and they were normal skin (now flesh)

-The first white skin release seems to be Kasumi Yashiro on May 3, 2005

-Then, there was Sanjie on July 23, 2005 which was a special tan specific to her

-Kanu Unchou on Dec 7, 2008 was also a tan specific to her

-First semi-white seems to have been KOS-MOS on Dec, 2012

And I do remember that it wasn't that long after that the semi-white became a standard skintone, but I really can't remember when that was. I'm sure someone else will have been ordering one and will remember. I did find a news post on DoA from March 2013 stating that the 'brand new' semi-white skin release came to Volks USA (in a limited release though, could not find date for the standard version).
EDIT// Well, I searched this forum (but the search gives results in an odd order so going into specifics was a pain) and according to this thread it seems that the semi-white parts were released in the summer 2013. Someone less lazy can probably find the specific date.

-The first release for the current available tans would be April 2, 2017 in Yokohama according to the DD news blog

normal skin (now flesh)

Possibly an interesting sidebar note to this is that Volks USA has some normal/flesh dolls marked as "Fair Skin" instead.  DDS 3 and f3 Karin, DD 3 and f3 Candy, MDD Liliru (but not the f3), MDD Rena, DDS3 Mayu, and DD3 Aoi.

I think that's a mistake, in that someone (perhaps @Monty) has mentioned that "fair skin" is one of the normal SD colors and that Volks just messed up or did a cut/paste job.

More on tan: the current tan colour (which is different to Kanu and different to the original Sanjie) first called ‘kasshoku’ also began with just DDH09 and DDH06 (a DD L bust and DDDy respectively) in late 2016, before Dream Choice started in mid 2017 - after that the other standard heads were available in tan too, plus MDD, DDS and eventually DDP. Boys only joined July 2019. There has been no limited/collaboration dolls released in the current tan skin yet.

That's right. They did the name change for DD and SD at the same time. Normal for DD became 'flesh' and normal for SD became 'fair' - it does make sense for them to be different because these colours do not look the same as vinyl and resin are different materials (the resin has a more yellow tint to it). Any material where a DD is called 'fair' is a mistake from someone who assumed that 'fair' was the new 'normal' for both types of dolls. Maybe from someone who specialized in the SD side. It's unfortunate though because it adds to the confusion.

Sorry for the late reply but I didn't see the thread was flooded with answers four days after I created it. I thought it was dead so I stopped coming...
I decided to look for answers on my own, at least for the standard parts as looking at the collaboration models for new skin colors was easy. Useless to say that exploring the various Volks websites through the wayback machine was a CHORE. It's the main reason for the delay.
The biggest problem was that most answers are on the Volks store and because of the volatility of the site (it's a store duh), it is badly archived.

This answer is incomplete as I thought I could save my post. I can't decently write all of that in one go as it took my hours just to find all those info.
Unfortunately, you can't save the post and you can't even copy the text without losing all the links and screwing the formatting. Couldn't find a way to save the markup either with this WISIWIG editor.
Therefore I will edit my post later with tanned skin information.

I believe White Skin was released the 21 January 2006, around or maybe at the same time as the release of the new Base Body 2.

Semi-White's option parts for the Base Body III were pre-released at Home Town Dolls Party Nagoya 5 in August 2013, @Yenna. Your thread wasn't talking about a standard issue.
I could find the parts being shown in the Volks News 54 (~07-2013).
It was difficult to find when Semi-White was released on the website with standard parts but I think it was when DDH-05 and 07 were released on the website as well. It happened between the 24 July and the 04 November 2013, which is quite a hole.
All the heads got a Semi-White Skin option according to the website.

誌上通販で先行販売されていたDDH-05とDDH-07のヘッドがいよいよラインナップに加わります! そして、人気のセミホワイト肌も全てのオプションヘッドで発売決定!

HOWEVER, it appears you could order those parts through mail order before it was released on the website! I didn't know you could do that! It makes everything so much complicated! I am not sure of what I am saying but my previous quote is what set me thinking it might be the case.

If I am not wrong, looking at the blog, you could mail order the heads with WS from the 17 September 2013 to the 31 October. The next page shows a DDH-06 with Semi-White Skin. In fact, I am pretty sure I am not mistaken as they keep talking about the deadline for mail ordering and show WS with a DDH-06 as well.

Now, I don't know if they shipped the stuff the moment you ordered it or if it was a pre-ordering period. I know they set up a photo session November 03... but that doesn't tell us anything haha.

The biggest challenge is Tanned Skin, which was called 褐色肌 (Kasshoku Hada) at the time. The page I found about Sanjïe doesn't represent her with tanned skin because it's a prototype and they never updated it...
