DD Sailor Jupiter

I'm really excited for Jupiter! 💖 I definitely want to have her alongside the others. (Even if... they're currently... in boxes... 😭) I asked Volks USA if they'll be carrying her, and they said they were still having discussions with Japan about it. Either way, I'm going to have to try my best to bring her home!

So, Volks clearly shows alternate gloves for other option hands, but the photo of the included outfit and accessories only shows one pair of gloves, for the default hands.

https://dollfie.volks.co.jp/blog/2020/05/25/002482.html

Am I missing something?  Sailor Moon and Mars can share gloves, but Mercury and Jupiter have unique cuff colors.  Volks seems to have made additional gloves for alt hands for them, but only for their photos so far?

Looking at all of the product pages for all of the Sailor Moon dolls carefully, I am pretty sure that Volks is just cheating. Only Sailor Moon comes with the extra gloves according to what is shown in all the pictures. For the other girls, they don't show anything that can't be cheated with the normal five-finger gloves.

I think the easiest picture to see this is on Mercury with the loosely-fisted hands here:

https://dollfie.volks.co.jp/dd/special/sailormoon/dds_sailormercury/

You can see the fingertips in the gloves are flat. So they put the regular gloves on those hands and then just folded the fingers over, and since I doubt they actually stay in that position, they glued/taped/something to make them stay, or stuck wires inside the gloves.

They did the same thing on the idol/love hands on the Jupiter blog page. They hid it more by the angle of the picture, but you can see it's separate fingers bent over the back, which the hands don't actually have.

I know these gloves are pretty loose but they must be really so in order to go over the loosely-fisted hands like that.

That's annoying.  Mitsuki's looking into getting some of those articulated finger hands for DD, if it works out we'll have to get a pair for each.

That is a damn shame. Wish they would have just done unique colored hands and forearms parts for each girl.

I haven't ordered any of her parts yet. *whines*

I've thought about doing that for all the senshi

Yes? That's the normal price for any licensed Dollfie Dream and doesn't really warrant multiple exclamation marks.

Normal, but still on the low end for limited DD prices.

The difference between Dollfie Dreams and Heroin? Heroin is illegal, Dollfie Dreams probably should be.

“Empty wallets, full hearts.” That’s probably an apt description for the effects of DD addiction

Exactly.

Considering how I've been otherwise dealing with aftermarket, Ranko v2 felt like she was inexpensive and a bargain. :)

If it annoyed you, sorry.

I've just never seen dolls that expensive before.

The price is reasonable though, considering how detailed and large they are.

I tend to search Mandarake for cheaper ones.

Volks standard dolls are cheaper, but their more expensive limiteds, like Blue Saber or Matoi, go up as high as $1100 new. $600 isn't too bad for a Volks limited doll.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I want to inform you that if you intend to use a Dream Fairy body to hybrid a doll, it will not be allowed to be shared on this forum (and any reputable vinyl doll forum, most likely) because it is a counterfeit body. They are modified knockoffs of Angell Studio's resin doll bodies. It appears the have counterfeited some hands from Volks and possibly other companies as well.

Additionally, Sailor Jupiter's head alone is likely to go for several hundred dollars (I'm not sure how much the senshi generally sell for 2nd hand or as just heads though, but most licensed character DD heads sell for a lot 2nd hand, and I have never seen a licensed character doll not go up in price after it sold out.) on the 2nd hand market, so it's generally cheapest to get a DD new, directly from Volks, if possible.

Personally, I still think $600 is too expensive for a vinyl doll.

Plus $350 is still too expensive for a Dollfie Dream body.

So I don't know what to do.

I don't understand why I can't share the fact that I like cheaper things.

I love the Dollfie bodies but I just can't pay for one. I'm just buying Blank Dollfie heads painting them and putting them on a body.

Don't pummel me with negative stuff please.

Dream Fairy is the only thing I can afford right now.

It's because Dream Fairy bodies are illegal knock-offs called recasts. Recasts are banned from every reputable doll-related forum, including this one. Now to be on-topic: Auuugh, I need Makoto. SO BADLY. If only she weren't click-war....

This is a luxury hobby, many people have had to save up for a long time to get the dolls they want (years even in some cases).

As for cheaper alternatives look into obitsu or night Lolita for bodies.

You'll find that the head of limited DDs tend to be one of the most expensive things in the aftermarket, as well as the outfits. So it might be a good idea to just slowly save up and make a custom one.

I don't believe anything negative was said here nor was anyone coming after you for stating something was cheaper. They were to inform you in regards as to what to expect in the hobby.

$600 is a lot for most to put towards a vinyl doll or miscellaneous item as most folk here with larger collections have spent an incredibly large amount of time in the hobby and had the ability to accumulate what they have which leads into my note, like CuteOne mentioned, to remember this is a luxury hobby. If you feel that $350 is too much (which is also completely understandable), that is fine as well as Mandarake has bodies for less as you mentioned shopping there. There are alternatives that will work for what you're looking for, Night Lolita being one of them (I don't have too many details on them, however remember them also being on the cheaper side of things.). There are multiple other alternatives on the resin side, however that would be a discussion better suited for Off-Topic or Den of Angels, where DDs are also considered on-topic due to being grandfathered as Volks originated from that side.

Another plausible alternative would also be Obitsu or Azone, as not only do they offer cheaper vinyl bodies but Azone has a lineup of vinyl anime dolls called pure neemo that are about $150 at most, the size range running at 1/6 (about 10in) or for the smaller, cheaper 1/12 (iirc 5?) Picco neemo which run at around $90 on pre-order. Aftermarket also generally runs about close to MSRP with a few exceptions.

Isn't that a knock-off too? I thought it was just another name for the same thing as Dream Fairy? (I may well be wrong.)

:classic_laugh: I think that's backwards; the 1/6 would be the larger doll, 10 inches sounds about right, and 1/12 the smaller one, at about 5 inches.

The issue is not that Dream Fairy bodies are cheap. The issue is that Dream Fairy bodies are literally counterfeit casts taken from other sculptors' hard work. That is why they are banned here, not because they're less expensive. As far as I know, Night Lolita bodies are their own sculpt and would therefore be allowed on the forum. They're far less expensive than a DD body.

It seems to me like you may have rushed in to this hobby and not done a lot of research? I don't want to be rude, but DDs are a hobby that you really need to take your time with in order to learn about them. It's very easy to accidentally buy counterfeit items and even damage your doll through improper care! Perhaps start with something smaller, like an Obitsu or a 27cm Dollfie? They're much less expensive and are still fun to customize! We're warning you because we want you to have a good time in the vinyl doll hobby. We don't want you to buy an illegal counterfeit and be unable to share your doll with us!

EDIT @cfx: Everything I've ever heard regarding Night Lolita is that the consensus is that their bodies and heads are their own sculpts. I think there are a few other counterfeit hinge-jointed bodies though. I believe @Cauldroness has mentioned them to me in the past, hopefully she could remind me? It'd be really good to have a pinned PSA thread so that newbies can learn what bodies are and aren't OK here and in general. :) I'd be happy to help put one together.

Another edit: I think we should start calling "recasts" for what they are-- counterfeits. That's the way things are trending in the resin BJD hobby and it seems to be helpful. "Recast" is a very vague, made-up term and it doesn't tell you anything about what a "recast" is or why it's bad? Whereas almost everyone knows what the term "counterfeit" is and will immediately be able to identify that the item is problematic in nature.

Yes I really think we need this, something like what DoA has. I know the forum guidelines has some general information, like that Barbies are off-topic, but nothing about specific counterfeits and such.

Historically, when the original Dollfie Dreams forum was started, I don't think there really were vinyl counterfeits so that probably wasn't needed. Now, a list of the speicific company names would certainly be helpful to newbies and I'd find it useful as well as I don't know every company, as evidenced by what I just asked.

Also that could let people know about the counterfeit DDs like Snow Miku and Saber so no one buys those thinking they're just a great deal on the real thing.

Oh, I didn't know that Dream Fairy are recasts.

I had no clue. Will try to find another option.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Yeah, I think most vinyl doll counterfeits are a relatively new thing, within the past year or so? I only started hearing about them very recently.

I'm on a super slow web connection at the moment, but I have a lot of free time on my hands so I can do some research into the counterfeit bodies. Just searching "dream fairy angell studio" turns up a lot of comparison proof photos of them being knockoffs, so there's a ton of information out there. I can compile it, but do mods have editing privileges for any user's posts? I'm happy to post it, but I'm not super active on this forum so it'd be nice if someone could help update it from time to time if anyone hears about new counterfeit doll parts.
(Or does the forum have a Wiki feature like DoA does that everyone can edit? I've been having a really hard time navigating Doll Dreaming's new layout. It took me like 5 minutes to figure out where to find my edit profile settings so I could add Arle to my profile!)
