painting vs dying

Recommended Posts

So, I've been kicking around a project idea, and I was wondering if anybody here has had experience with changing the skin color of your dolls.  I'm thinking about making a red-skin devil girl, and I'm wondering if I would be better off trying to dye her, airbrushing her, or if anybody knows of any resin dolls that come in red skin tones.  I've had a hard time finding any information, and I'm starting to think this may be a pipe dream.  Can anybody point me in a productive direction, or tell me this is a bad idea and give it up?

Hello, DesertPhantom.

I have no experience with dying vinil dolls although I know Silvia (clockworkangel) dyed tan her MDD, even the skeleton and it looked awesome. I haven't dyed any resin dolls myself but I used to own a doll (BJD= Resin) that was airbrushed (painted) from white to a bronze color, I do NOT recommend doing that. The painting chips even if you're only displaying it and the joint always end up looking weird.

As for fantasy colors (Red ) included, I suggest you take a look at resinsoul. Make sure you check flickr as their pics don't do them justice. They're affordabe and they have nice dolls. I think Ai may be what you're looking for as she's a girl with horns and has fantasy legs too.

I'm sure Impldoll also does fantasy colors if you ask them.

I'm afraid I didn't answer all of your questions but I hope I was able to bring some light and direction :)

cheers!

I also wouldn't think painting would work well at all. Even if the paint stayed on the vinyl alright with enough sealant, the hard plastic of the joints would be very prone to chipping.

Here is a post about dyeing a Smart Doll purple though

it went well and I imagine you could do it. I'd start with semi white to have a lighter base colour. She would have to be a darker red I believe though. The colour of the base vinyl will affect the final colour so lots of tests are required before just dyeing the doll

OK, so it sounds like painting is totally off the table then.  Thank you so much for your answers!  I'm going to have to do more thinking and considering, but this really points me in the right direction!

Painting the joints is off the table, but it still works well on the vinyl outer pieces. I have a painted DD Obitsu hybrid boy. His paint hasn't chipped in years. But I never did figure out how to dye his joints unfortunately. For the outer vinyl, I used Angelus brand paint. They have several shades of red to choose from. I painted head to toe by hand, no airbrush. Painting with a cross hatched pattern avoided brush strokes, and little dabs of 70% isopropyl alcohol took care of smoothing out any brush stroke looking areas that did appear.

I also did the dye route as an experiment but didn't like the results. But I was using an old DDS body I got secondhand and something must've just gotten on it. It came out with dark splotches all over. So I'd probably use a newer body if I did it again since others don't seem to have that issue.

I've happened upon this thread as I am also going to experiment on dyeing a girl.  The other day someone I follow posted the cutest tan girl and now I want to make my own brown girl.

Going to follow the advise posted here and see where it takes me.

Cool, make sure to post your results!

Interesting.  I'm thinking maybe I need to see about getting a junk body off Mandrake or Ebay and trying a few different things.  Thank you for your input!

Actually, you may be able to paint the joints with minimal chipping, you'll just have to prepair the plastic properly (soaking the plastic to remove mold release, sanding thoroughly, priming with a dedicated hard plastic primer.)
