Questions about modifying/adding on to dollfie dream heads?

Recommended Posts

Lina

I would like to start getting into modifying my dollfie dreams with more extreme mods and was wondering if there are any basic tutorials out there for how to get started?

I am also wondering if there are any materials that will bind properly to the soft vinyl or what would be best for adding sculpted details?

I'm curious about binding as well, and chemicals that do or don't work with vinyl. I just saw in another thread in here somewhere that acetone can damage vinyl?

I've seen someone on here use acetone to coax vinyl to shrink and it's very commonly used in the fashion doll modding community to remove factory paint, so overall it doesn't seem to be an issue? Just make sure you wash the area really well after you use it.

Interesting, maybe I misread and it was resin and not vinyl, so much to learn! Is there a guide to fabrics and staining as well? Or do most people just test on scrap pieces of vinyl each time?

Acetone is a use at your own risk product with all types of plastics, because of the melting of the plasticizers that allowed for the shrinkage in the thread previously linked.  Some people choose to use acetone sparingly and then rinse really well, while others avoid it entirely. I have heard of people accidentally unintentionally causing shrinkage by soaking a head in acetone in order to remove a faceup without scrubbing. Some people use that method on resin heads without issue, and when the method was used on a vinyl head they got a nasty surprise and could no longer use the unevenly shrunken head. But really, just use any chemical sparingly and rinse well with gentle soap and water afterward.
