Have any of your older dolls yellowed BADLY?

Recommended Posts

So im a bit troubled by this thought. Ive got a doll that was made in 2010 getting shipped to me second hand (there was no yellowing on her as far as mandarake descriptions and images go) and im curious if yellowing is inevitable? Do they yellow super badly even without light hitting them directly from table lamps? Id love to keep my gal fresh and good looking for a few years atleast :( im wondering if anyone has a doll from that time period and hasnt noticed any super bad yellowing on the face specifically. Im curious about normal skin but any other experiences with the other skin types are appreciated too. Thank you.

Unfortunately the answer will be: Your mileage may vary due to many reasons, like climate, and how the sun happens to bake where you live.

as someone just living to the east of you, I've got a original Blue saber from 2008 who has been on display since day one of getting her, and actually her blonde wig has done more to stain her head than sunlight, compared to what I've seen on some mandarake sales pictures for her. Also I have a Feena from roughtly the same era, and no mentionable damage to be found.

Also as a comparison, I have a 2011 Moe second edition, that had sun/UV damage where her faceup had lost the cheek blushing, despite them being on the sales pictures on mandarake (just to give you a bit more to think about, unfortunately) But she hasnt deteriorated any further than that despite being in my ownership for a few years.

Here's a photo of old blue amongst the siblings, and if you compare the heads (the bodies arent the originals in this photo), there isnt really a dramatic difference between the old and new blue saber, and also Nero from 2011:

for context my dolls are on display in my livingroom, and I use roll courtains to block direct sunlight, but their not the full block kind, so it can get pretty bright in the room too.

Also if you look into the maintenance section of the forum there are some tricks to roll back some yellowing.

I have three older hard headed girls who are noticeably darker than a new flesh skin body. I would say they are a little more on the yellow side, and a new body is a little more pink, but they are still a close enough match that using a new body doesn't bother me. They all three came to me like this when I adopted them years later, so I'm not sure what conditions, if any, caused it. But I also have another second hand hard headed girl that is still a good match for flesh skin, and my oldest custom standard heads are also the hard kind, and they haven't really aged that much despite having wiped their faceups a couple of times. Like @finnleo, my dolls live in my living room, and I have semi opaque sheer curtains on the window, but the room still gets a lot of light. I had a similar setup in my previous house with sheers on the window, and I also had the blinds down there, which still let in a lot of light because of how the window faced the sun for a lot of the day. My oldest custom heads are from 2011, so they're certainly not new anymore.

I have owned an Obitsu body that had major yellowing. With those bodies, the arms and legs are a different hardness than the torso pieces, and it's the harder limbs that yellowed. I see this happen to some extent on all of my Obitsu bodies, but it's usually only noticeable if you look for it. My worst offender was an Obitsu 55cm boy body. The limbs went much darker and more yellow than the torso, despite wearing long sleeves and pants all the time. It was bad enough that it bothered me, and since I also didn't like the joints on that body I ended up doing a mashup with DDII parts to use the same torso but different limbs. To be fair, I bought that body just a year or so before they stopped being sold, so it may have even been from old stock since it wasn't a popular body anymore. I don't think sunlight really had much to do with the yellowing, but rather just age. I would have tried to see if the color could be lightened again if I hadn't hated the joints anyway.

To summarize, my experience is that yellowing is hit or miss, and probably has more to do with the vinyl batch than with the environment, though of course sun damage can still occur on direct sunlight over a period of time, like all plastics. As long as your girl's skin tone doesn't bother you when you get her, with normal care she probably won't change much anymore since she's already older.
