I for one DO prefer speech bubbles. This way (especially for readers new to a story, who don't know the characters names yet) it is way easier to understand who is saying what. It also allows the focus of the reader to remain on the picture, while text above would pull it away.

From my own photo stories, I know it's more cumbersome to edit in speech bubbles and it can sometimes be a challenge to arrange them, so they are read in the correct order (getting this right may even involve pre-planning which perspective to take the photo from or even the setup of the scene itself). But I'd say the results are often well worth it.

Then again - I'd rather prefer a story with text above the pictures to none at all. If people want to tell a story but do not have the time or energy to bother with more detailed editing, that's perfectly fair too.

So TLDR: Do photo stories the way that is more fun for yourself. This is a hobby after all and meant to be enjoyed.

*dusts the cobwebs off thread* Sorry for the lack of stories. Had a rough time and had to move in with my brother in law. I forgot just how frustrating moving in. One pic short story for the time being till the dust settles!
