Volks SD - Disney Frozen Collaboration.

Please don't be a Japan exclusive! This is going to be very difficult to get with Frozen's popularity, Japan exclusive would mean almost impossible. The resale prices of Cinderella is double that of Rapunzel last I checked because Cinderella was Japan exclusive and Rapunzel wasn’t even though Cinderella was preorder and Rapunzel was a lottery.

I can't imagine Disney would let them make it an exclusive. They may have allowed it with one of the older princesses, but they know damn well how popular Frozen is and they are absolutely gonna capitalize on it.

Looking at Cinderella and Rapunzel, unless Volks plans on making these the first of a new breed of Volks anime resins, I am thinking Elsa and Anna will be more of an interpretation like Rapunzel than a perfect copy of their 3D model from the films. 

Cinderella was easier to match in SD form because her original art didn’t incorporate the anime style of character design the way Rapunzel’s did.

With that said, Volks does a pretty good job with their sculpt interpretations; Belldandy looks like Belldandy to me.

I would assume so. The only thing that worries me is that the previous sculpts both had a sort of generic "dreamy" vibe to them (if that make sense); I'd want Elsa and Anna's sculpts to better match their regal sassy/bouncy optimistic personalities.

I was thinking earlier that Elsa’s confident smirk is going to be hard. I worry less about their eyes, because a lot of their expressions have eyes more like an SD. Their cheeks and smiles are where I think it’s going to be more interpretive. 

Also, unless they release a new slimmer SD body, or really change up the heads, their head to body scale is going to be like a traditional SDGr or SD16. 

Put my name on the Japan Doll Direct waitlist for Elsa, even though we don't know how orders are going to work yet (no layaway available atm either; hopefully something opens up). I figure if it is a lottery, I can always enter myself and give my waitlist slot to someone else if I do end up winning.

Oh my, I'm both excited and fearful. On one hand, I want to see Elsa yesterday. I have fallen in love with Frozen and Elsa back when it came out (now, I much preferred Anna in Frozen II), and wanted an Ice Queen doll ever since.

On the other hand - it might be a Japan exclusive, it might be a clickwar or a lottery turned bloodbath. And we can safely assume the second market prices will be atrocius, so no chances then (I don't love Elsa that much). Preorder would be great, and I hope they go that route, but I know chances are slim.

Getting really anxious to see these girls and decide properly whether I 100% want or not. It doesn't help that other companies keep coming out with really tempting dolls, or that I keep stress-spending on doll accessories here and there because of...certain upcoming political events that I will not name.

On the positive side, if I do get Elsa I am totally dragging her to every park in Disney World for photo ops. Possibly even on a future Disney cruise. Maybe even Disneyland/LA Dolpa if I manage to get next years Cali trip to line up with it...although I might go for the Icon instead since she's lighter. Maybe I can dress her up in Elsa's outfit?

(Def not taking her overseas, as cool as that would be. Too much risk, plus I'm prob gonna need room for all the dolls I buy there. Might take Alice though, especially if we manage to get to the Kyoto site - she's small enough to fit in my carryon.)

We’ll have to see if it happens next year. I think it might be high risk for Volks USA to plan on holding that event without a vaccine in place for Covid. Makes more sense to punt it out to 2022, but we’ll see what get announced. 

In the past the 2017 Dolpa was announced in Sept 2016, the 2019 Dolpa was announced July 2018, and the 2015 Dolpa was announced Feb 2015.

I’m guessing we will know in the next couple of months, and if they do want to do it then it makes a lot of sense for them to take a wait and see approach, so the announcement may not be until early next year.

Same here. I'm on this forum a lot trying to distract myself. I turned off and muted my news app completely because I'm absolutely terrified. I wish I had the money to stress spend also haha. I've been eyeballing some PenginWorkshop wigs for my girls and it's so tempting hhhhrgh. 

Back on topic, I have seen some of the Disney collabs and while they were pretty they weren't my cup of tea. I think a Frozen interpretation would very interesting though. I wonder how they'll get the expression right on these dolls. SDs generally have very neutral expression sculpt-wise and I'm having a hard time envisioning the look on their dolls. I think the only resin doll they did that had a sassy smirk was the Devilman chibi and that didn't go over so well. I'm assuming it'll be like 2B and 9S where we'll see the iconic outfits and the dolls themselves will be YMMV when it comes to Volks's interpretation of them.

A nice alternative to stress spending is to go through some doll clothes sites and put together looks to buy for your dolls when you actually have the money again.

I have an F-17 and he's fairly smirky, so it is possible...they might be less likely to make a smirky girl though. We'll see.

Oooh, I see. I love the lips on F-17. Yes, I think the SD girls tend to look pretty / cute / glamorous with usually neutral expressions (with sometimes a slight smile?). The guys have more range in terms of expression.

Does that mean they most likely won't be released in December, btw? I find it strange that we still have no pictures.

It seems like the dolls may be ready, at least that's why I think they put the photos... But I am wondering when will they announce more then. A date would be nice.

Maybe they cannot show more because of Disney?

My husband is so excited for Elsa.  He’s a huge Elsa fan.  I’m excited because of WS Grafitti Girl!  I love DearSD too.  Volks always has a particular magic.

They are doing multiple versions! I was expecting Yo or Midi versions of the younger versions though. I wonder if the Dear SD versions will be sold as a set since they're announced together? And maybe at different times?

Multiple versions = more chances for people to get these characters, so I'm happy about that. I think most people are going to go for the older versions though. 

(What are the odds I'm not going to end up buying/making my own SD13 Anna somewhere down the line because Elsa needs her sister? What are the odds I'm not going to end up making the boys as well even though I really don't want any more resin SDs (or at least make my current ones cosplay them)? Somebody plz make vinyl boys that aren't super-anime or super-realistic but somewhere in between so I have options...)

It does seem like they are being presented 1, 2, 3.

Even if they do the Dear SD first, those will give us a good idea of what grown-up Anna & Elsa will look like.

For me the hardest part of the tease is not knowing the release details. Still holding out hope they won’t be VS/VIP only, or a Japan only release. 

I am so excited to see 4 dolls being released! I do hope we get to see images of all 4 first before deciding. 

Seems they are indeed doing the first movie design. Maybe there will be separate outfits (maybe wigs?! 👀) available that were in the second movie?

I really want to see them, especially Anna because I found her so great in the second movie 😫

I don’t think they’ve ever done a sight unseen doll release, or at least not since I joined the hobby back in 2014.

They could do a lot of merchandizing. I don’t know if they have ever done anything like that with SD releases, but Frozen could be the SD equivalent of Hatsune Miku in that regard.

They did a good job of balancing the storylines of both sisters in spite of how divergent the storylines were at times. Both of them were a lot more confident in themselves the second film too. I think you see that more in Anna, because she lacks her sister’s super powers.
