Poofiemus Posted October 18, 2020 So, I'm gathering materials to make my MDD Mochi Ashi girl a sparkly tail, and I know I want it to be magnetic. What I can't decide is how to best approach applying the receiving magnet to the lower torso on the doll herself. Superglue to the inside of her butt? Superglue to the outside of the butt? Actually cut a hole in the vinyl for the magnet? I've already got some beefy rare earth magnets, so that's set, the final mystery really is about how to get it attached to the doll long-term. I know there's a few people here who have done magnetic tails before, so I'd like to get some input before I go about permanently modifying my girl's rear end, lol. Galvatim Posted October 18, 2020 I haven't done much in terms of attaching tails with magnets, but I have used a few methods for ears. I tried using eye putty to attach magnets to the inside of the vinyl headcap, and it works well at keeping the magnet in place, although the magnets I have aren't strong enough to really keep the ears in place with all of the vinyl, cloth headcap, and wig. I think eye putty or hot glue would work to attach the magnet in the butt, and allow for adjustment or removal.

Given that I will sometimes put the tail on with clothes between it and the butt magnet, and your experience with ears, that does make me think putting the magnet on the outside of the butt is probably the best bet--this lil dragon bean isn't much for flashing midrif anyway, lol. Eye putty, I'll have to see if it's strong enough for at least a test run for placement, lol! I don't think hot glue is gonna be a good long term solution for me, 1, because high temp can apparently screw up magnet strength, and 2, I live in a place where temperatures regularly go above 100F. All it takes is one outdoor photo shoot or a little bit in a car in summer and whoops, hot glue is just a useless mess. (Found this out because I tried hot glue sueding my resin Cuartos Darkhorn. Regrets were had.) In this household, sanity is considered a tresspasser.
