Starwaia Posted November 3, 2020 (edited) Hey all! I'm curious how much, or if at all, holidays factor into personal doll(or other hobby ) buying. Now that Christmas is around the corner... nearly, I'm finding myself tempted to finally get a Dollfie Dream girl if I can afford it. It's a convenient excuse and I think many of us in 2020 could use something to treat ourselves after the fiasco the year has been. Does anyone else experience a loosening of their wallet this time of year? Or on their birthday or something? Ultimately I'm trying to limit myself doll-wise this year but the thought is still there. Has anyone made some impulse buys in the midst of holiday shopping? And did it work out or did you regret it? ... I know it's not even December yet but I'm having thoughts... and it's not like the retail stores are any better about waiting to get into the holiday spirit... I know someone who is already thinking of putting their tree up because this year has been a mess and they need something nice :3 Edited November 3, 2020 by Starwaia Thanks autocorrect Currently watching BNHA, 1-2 episodes behind on the anime rn and absolutely obsessed! (being in a fandom late has made dodging spoilers an issue tho ) More into Nendoroids and my resin BJDs rn- including some BNHA character shells hehehe - my Smartdolls are boxed up at the moment but I'm still happy to talk dolls and doll plans! OccultBeast Posted November 3, 2020 I absolutely buy myself birthday gifts, but try to avoid buying myself Christmas gifts, as my partner tends to go all out for me and I don't want to accidentally buy something they want to or have already bought me. You could technically argue that my DD Miku was a birthday gift to myself, even if she arrived a few months early. That's what I told myself, anyway~ I've... actually already finished my Christmas shopping for this year. We usually start in October, but this year we started mid-September, because we buy everything online and wanted things to get here in time!
Veravey Posted November 3, 2020 I'm weirdly identical to @OccultBeast I definitely get myself birthday gifts, and Christmas is the same as above; my boyfriend is very generous and gets more than he should. My family has always been big on Christmas gifting, too, so I also start buying gifts in September, 2 gifts to go this year! This takes a lot of budgeting so that's another reason I start so early. Going to try and wrap everything in November too; things get hectic at my parents place for Christmas because we're Polish and make far too much food (12 dishes on Christmas Eve.) Given how stressful this year has been, I want to get my gifts out of the way so I can help out over there the week of Christmas. My 2 Smart Dolls (my first dolls!) and 2 outfits each will be my gifts this season and I absolutely can't wait to order them in the next week. I'm really hoping with DHL they'll arrive smoothly in the next couple weeks. My birthday is early in the year, too, and I'm debating getting into the Magical Cute and Witch Azone EX Cute lines, I'm an enormous sucker for colour themed sets On this topic though, I do want to mention I've always felt sorry for anyone with a December birthday; my step-mom's is Christmas Eve so my dad and I try to highlight her as best as we can in between the chaos. She's an angel and absolutely deserves it.
monkeypizzasonic Posted November 3, 2020 I'm lucky enough to have a birthday in July, so I tend to ask for one big present then and one in December. This year I was lucky enough to have the Dollfie Icons come out right around my birthday, so my parents helped pay for her. Christmas this year is probably going to involve Elsa. I have been planning some purchases for this time of year, but it's just as much because companies tend to have good sales around now anyway.
Orenjiina Posted November 3, 2020 I actually don’t really buy myself gifts specifically for holidays. I tend to use it as a justification though when I feel bad about buying something expensive for myself. Like, “well I’ll just call this a birthday present” or something. But then it ends up more like a way to fight off buyer’s remorse instead of an actual gift.
Riesz Posted November 3, 2020 I typically get money from relatives for all holidays so if there's a doll-related thing I want near the holiday I'll buy it early sometimes if it's a pre-order, then say that I used my gift money on it once the holiday arrives. MoonyKat Posted November 4, 2020 I usually don’t buy gifts for myself but my family is fairly supportive of my collector hobbies so I just send them links of stuff I want around my birthday/holidays and see what happens Thats usually for smaller stuff like figures or doll accessories tho, full dolls are expensive 😆
Tasuke Posted November 4, 2020 (edited) Quote Do you treat yourself for Christmas/Birthdays/other holidays? pretty much. in fact, NENDOROID Doll Miku Hatsune is slated for a late-Dec. release, so she'll end up being a late X-Mas present... stellarfox Posted November 4, 2020 Yes! I ask my husband for anything price-er for my birthday (July) and Christmas. Special occasions just seem an appropriate time for it to me! I did just make a parabox order last week...My 3rd child is due at the end of this month, I figure that's a pretty special occasion too, lol.
Jezrah Posted November 4, 2020 My birthday is quite close to Christmas. This of course has the disadvantage of not having another time of year for gifts, but it has the advantage of sometimes being able to ask for one combined thing that costs a bit more. I have gotten a couple of doll accessories from family when I had something I wanted with a low enough price range, but that doesn't happen often. Mostly I can only ask for things you can get locally or on Amazon that were meant for 18" dolls due to shipping costs from elsewhere pushing the overall cost. When my husband was alive, we had money trouble so he couldn't get me doll things during that time either, though he may have been willing if we had had the funds. However, he liked to pick things for me secretly so that I wouldn't know what it was, and he had trouble following exactly what doll things I would want and where to buy them. Instead, he started my Funko Pop collection by getting me characters he knew I'd like. When we weren't broke many years ago he still mostly bought me non doll things because it was easier for him to know what I would like. As for purchasing for myself, I would only maybe consider a doll purchase to be a present to myself if it happened to be arriving near Christmas and I could wait to open it. But this really hasn't lined up for me so far, so I just unbox dolls and items when they get here. Anyway, TLDR; no I don't get dolls or doll items as presents most of the time because it's out of most people's price range and I don't make myself wait for things I bought myself.

miraclelovely Posted November 4, 2020 i also treat myself to a birthday gift, but i avoid christmas gifts as my sisters and i get each other things we want for the occasion! my birthday is currently the only way i can justify buying myself expensive dolls lol ^^"
demonmiko Posted November 4, 2020 I usually treat myself for my birthday in addition to doing 1 or 2 larger doll purchases throughout the year if/when something pops up that I absolutely need. I save a bit every month to put towards my "hobby fund" so that when I splurge, it's not really noticeable.
Babybel-Goth Posted November 5, 2020 I like to treat myself for my birthday, if I can. But I'm more known to treat my dolls (and myself?) on their birthdays, haha.
MadQueenHarmony Posted December 20, 2020 I used to. Every holiday - Yule, Easter, my birthday (which was great as both are in April), 4th of July, Talk Like A Pirate day - every holiday was a cause to buy myself something. But, I was also single and had no pets or responsibilities other than basics like rent, utilities, and food. Anymore, though, I don't have the disposable income I used to have, and what extra money I do have I generally use to buy things for my partner. Yesterday's today's tomorrow
sinclair Posted January 1, 2021 This is typically me. Except this time is was a new doll in addition to trains. My wife always says she doesn't know what to get me, so I buy it for myself and she just puts her name on it.
DreamDollDesign Posted January 1, 2021 I didn't used to, but I do now. No one in my life could ever afford to (or figure out how to) get me doll related stuff...or most stuff I'm interested in. So may as well do it myself. :3 Turns out I'm a great gift giver. lmao
HannGS Posted January 2, 2021 I used to treat myself on my b-day and christmas, but if I find some dolly deals I usually pick them no matter the day it is... >_< Sometimes I feel so guilty doing it, but I know it's worth it ^^
ItsMeMichelle Posted March 7, 2021 I'm pretty good to myself all year around, if the is something I want I will usually get it, these are usually in expensive things though, I have been saving recently though as I want to go to Japan next year (pandemic withstanding) as we couldnt go this year of course. However my recent interest in Dollfies may oray not take a little nibble of those savings!
Shamrock Posted May 20, 2021 I used to treat myself to a spa day on my birthday. Now I haven't really done anything special for myself since the pandemic...
