Dark purple wig staining question

Recommended Posts

Roxanne

So I just bought a doll off of Mandarake who comes with the really dark purple (or maybe it's blue? I can't really tell well from the listing) wig.

A while ago on facebook I saw a post come by of someone who owned a doll with a wig in this color. I remember she said this wig color was known to stain, so now I'm a bit worried.
I usually have lighter colors on my dolls like blonde or white and this would be my first doll with this kind of color.

Is it true? Is this color known to stain? If so, how long would it take for the wig to start staining? Will it take a while and will I be okay with leaving it on for a bit? If so, how long is recommended? Or should I take other steps to prevent staining? If so, what? Would a wig-cap be enough?

I understand a lot will depend on the inside of the wig if the wig-cap is flesh colored or not?

Any info you could give me on this would be really helpful. I'm really terrified of staining my dolls as I don't really have any expierence with stain treatment as of yet.

Here's a picture of the wig of the doll; (It's taken from the original listing so it's not very clear. I hope it's enough to give an idea!)

The hair for most doll wigs is made from some kind of plastic (not seldom PET - the same stuff as soda bottles). In those cases the color pigment is usually embedded into the plastic and cannot stain your doll. Some wigs use actual hair or fur (such as mohair) which is then dyed - those pose some staining risk, but the one in the linked image looks like a plastic one to me. So I don't think you have to fear the hair itself.

A different story is the wig cap, which is made of regular fabric. If this is a light color, it is not (or just lightly dyed) and poses no real staining risk. Though, some wig caps may be colored similarly to the (dark) hair. Then the risk that it'll stain is fairly high - although there may well be dark wig caps that do not stain at all. You can't really see the wig cap in the image, so you'll have to check once it has arrived.

In general, the staining risk of a wig is usually much more related to the manufacturer, than to just the color of the wig.

Unfortunately, in the image the wig is in very simple packaging, so it's difficult to pinpoint the who made it. If you can link to the original Mandarake listing, maybe we can pull a little more info from that.

Thank you for the detailed reply, that was very helpful! I got a bit worried after seeing that post on facebook and I'd rather be safe than sorry!
Maybe that person was more refering to the wig cap then, since I also suspect it to be a darker colored one. If it does end up having a stain risk, would just buying a seperate wig cap help me protect my doll?

She is a D'coord so the wig should be from Volks itself? Unless they swapped it out for a different wig, that I do not know. It's actually my first time purchasing a D'coord in general, so I'm not really familiar with how they're usually packaged. Here is the listing: https://order.mandarake.co.jp/order/detailPage/item?itemCode=1157382810&ref=flist&lang=en

Then it's highly likely this is a Volks wig. It's not odd for a Dream Choice or D'coord wig to be packaged this way.

This means at least the strands of hair themselves should be safe.

However, if the wig cap turns out to be a dark color it's best to be cautious. The (dark) wig caps of some Volks wigs are known to stain. Albeit the accounts that I have come across were usually for character dolls. I don't know if the Dream Choice / D'coord wig lineup is better in that regard.

If you have your doll wear a separate white (or lightly coloured) fabric wig cap underneath the wig, it should provide about the same protection as a bodysuit does for colourful clothes. This means there will be a significant protection effect, however over very long periods of time* it's possible for the wig to stain the separate wig cap and so eventually for the pigment to seep through. The good thing is, any stains on the separate wig cap should be visible well before your doll is in acute danger. So it can't hurt to inspect the separate wig cap for stains every once in a while.

I have no personal experience with silicone wig caps, but to my knowledge they are not very effective at stain protection.

* This absolutely depends on how "stainy" your wig is. This could be anywhere from a few days to well over a year. Best to check more often at first.

Thank you so very much, that was incredibly helpful, you took a lot of my worries away! 💗

I also heard from a youtuber that the silicone wig caps don't protect against staining. She said she liked to wear one underneath her fabric wig cap because it helped keep the wig in place, but it wouldn't protect against staining, that's why she had the fabric one over it as well. I'll be sure to look into picking a fabric one up sometime soon, just to be sure. Thank you so much again, I really appreciate all the help you have given me!
