ChrisFhey Posted May 12, 2021 Hey everyone, I'm looking around for a stand for my DD and my incoming MDD, but I've no idea what makes a good stand. Do you guys and girls have any recommendations as far as stands go?
OccultBeast Posted May 13, 2021 As far as versatility goes, the 'Invisible' Doll Stand is probably the top choice. It's extremely strong and can be twisted to any position, so it's great for 'jumping' poses, since it can hold your doll in the air. It also makes a fine everyday stand, but you can't set your doll down one-handed, and the grip is always visible around the waist. I purchased the Volks SD saddle stand, and the Stand Chair, but found I didn't like them as much, as they were just too bulky for DD, and sold them pretty quickly. I ended up buying a pair of these instead, and I haven't regretted it once. You can find tons of them online under '1/3 BJD Stand' and any of them will work, really. There are plastic bases or metal bases, but the plastic ones are just fine. I think they're the best because not only are they cheap, but they're lightweight and easy to adjust, and you can set your doll down one-handed and pick them up just as easily. They also sit great under skirts and don't push the clothing out awkwardly. I will say though, even if they SAY they work for 1/4 scale dolls, they are too tall for MDD. @BonBoop had her dad shorten hers with a pipe cutter, and thanks to her advice I purchased a mini tubing cutter from Walmart (linked so you can reference for finding something similar, if you want to). With it I was able to chop off part of the lower stand 'pipe' and make it the right height for my MDD. So definitely be aware of that if you decide to go for these for MDD sizes! You will have to shorten the stand somehow, but otherwise they're great. I think in the end, it depends on what you're looking for. I'm not in a situation where I have to worry about a lot of movement (we don't get earthquakes and don't have dogs or kids to jostle things around), so I just wanted a stand that offered a little extra stability for my dolls on my desk, but you might want a stand that is more sturdy, so it just depends really~!
ChrisFhey Posted May 13, 2021 Wow! Thank you so much for that splendidly detailed post! I’m not in a situation where I have to worry about a lot of movement either, but I have to say, that “invisible stand” looks pretty neat. I might just get one of those just to see what I can do with them. :3 But I think that, generally speaking, those saddle type stands would be plenty for just putting my girls on my desk. Thanks for the tip of shortening the stand for MDD type dolls, too. I’ll look around for one of those pipe cutting tools as well.
