Magazine order heads?

Hello!! I got a ddh-01 head on mandarake! She's so cute and I am so excited to get her a mochi ashi body. 

 

My question is, mandarake listed the head as a magazine order product. Does anyone know when they did this/if they still do this, as well as what magazine they can be ordered from? I was so excited to be able to get a really affordable painted head, and it has me wondering how accessible they are! Now I need to think of a name and pick an eye color for this cutie!

 

The magazine is Volks News, which has something members only can order for a limited time in every issue - it comes with the order form for it. Previously, these used to be only available for Volks members in Japan and VolksUSA would do a limited preorder, but now since GL (Global) membership exists, they have them online for GL members too, so it’s a lot easier to get them.

These items vary issue to issue but in the past they have been prepainted heads like that one you have, unpainted heads usually only available in Dream Choice (such as DCH16) special hand parts (like the two clasped hands and the thumbs up hand) not sold elsewhere, and special wigs. (The current GL item in the web store are special wigs, actually, although the order period is either over or ending soon I think)

There hasn’t been a special order for painted heads in years and years (that head you have looks pretty old too) and since Dream Choice and DCoord exists as the main way to get a non-licensed doll with a prepainted head now I don’t think it’s likely there will be in future - especially because the more recent DCH16 order was blank heads. But you never know. I think it’s likely the next time they offer heads through Volks News/as a GL item on the web store it will be another unpainted Dream Choice head, though. It’s kinda a shame because it’s much harder to get the prepainted heads outside of Japan, so I hope they eventually make DCoords and Dream Choice more accessible for GL members too.

The special magazine faceup heads are among the most beautiful that Volks have ever done.  I think I have at least one of every version and a couple of my favorites. Congrats on your beautiful girl!

Thank you so much for all the information!! That's sad to read they don't do painted heads as much (if at all) anymore. I've been thinking of getting the global membership, though! Seems like there could be some cool stuff offered.

Yeah I definitely think it's on the older side, the head cap is super firm compared to my Liliru MDD. But even though she's old, her skin tone matches my current MDD body so well, and her faceup is impeccable! I don't think this sweet little head ever got used. She looks brand new and untouched.

Volks has not released ones like these in a long time. If I’m not mistaken heads 1-5 had 1 version each, 07 had 2? And 06 had 3. They will normally talk about the release in Volks news, the websites or FB page.
