Mouth mod/faceup help!

Recommended Posts

Chiakisenpai

I have been super interested in beginning to learn about DD mods and faceups.

My questions are:

  • What kind of putty/ clay is used for the mouth and teeth?
  • What dye is suitable for the clay/putty?
  • How do you attach it to the mod? What kind of glue?

And for the faceup, just some clarifications:

  • How do you spray MSC on the face? One quick spray or multiple?
  • What do you use to erase pastel pencil marks you don't need?
  • Do I need acrylic paint thinner in addition to retarder? Is it even safe to mix them?

Im not sure if anyone will even answer or know the answers to these questions but I just thought I'd try posting here. I have been dreaming about diving into the world of faceups since I got my first one commissioned but I have waited so long and I have so many questions! I've mostly been super nervous about using MSC because it is so toxic and I also heard that hot weather is not good for using it so I'm extremely nervous ><

I don't have personal experience with that, but there was a video by Tsutomu Ch. about that:

It's in Japanese, but you should be able to get what's going on.

He used cheap air-dry clay from Daiso (Japanese dollar store) which seems to work well enough.

If you're worried that the clay parts could stain the vinyl, coating them with a layer of MSC after drying might help.

I start next to the part that I want to coat and once the spray is properly coming out I move over the part, passing it completely. I tend to go back and forth about three to four times, then stop spraying. That should give an even coating. - Always wear a respirator when spraying MSC!

Then, I rotate the part if necessary and repeat it from any other angles. Then let it dry. This counts as one coat.

Before painting, I usually do three coats over the blank vinyl and afterwards one or two coats to seal in the paint.

To my knowledge it is high humidity, not temperature, that is the issue. I don't know the exact value, but if the relative humidity is >60% the coats may come out shiny/glossy instead of matte.

For pastel chalks, a standard rubber/eraser worked well for me. It may work for pastel pencils as well.

No Idea about that one unfortunately...
